● Dyson, Stringer & Cloher Friday 12th December: Table Seating. BYO. All Ages. Tickets: Concession $35 Adults $40

In 2013 Dyson, Stringer and Cloher claimed their place on the Australian live music scene with an extensive 35date tour of Australia. Voted ‘Best Live Show’ by Rhythms Magazine, they continued their three part musical onslaught with standout performances at Byron Bay Blues Fest in April this year. 2014 has seen the release of Mia Dyson’s fifth studio ‘Idyllwild’, Liz Stringer’s ‘Live At The Yarra’ live album and DVD and Jen Cloher team up with to deliver ‘Stone Age Brain’ a post apocalyptic punk rock stomper. To see the year out (and with their eye on more to come in 2015) Dyson, Stringer and Cloher perform their only headline shows for 2014

‘Summer of Soul’ Sat Jan 10th 2015

● Paul Kelly presents feat. , Clairy Browne, Kira Puru, Vika & Linda Bull PAUL KELLY presents The Merri Soul Sessions, the full album, will be available through regular retail channels in December 2014. See Paul Kelly, with Dan Sultan, Clairy Browne, Kira Puru, Bull, and all the musicians on the album perform the album and new songs live for the very first time at Mossvale Park’s Summer of Soul on January 10th 2015.

Paul Kelly explains … “In recent years doing band shows with Vika and Linda, Vika had been singing , an old song of mine, and bringing the house down each time. I was keen to record her version and thought, naturally, that if we were going into the studio we should try and get some other songs on tape as well. I had a song in mind for Linda. I wrote a couple of songs with Dan Sultan that had a soul kind of feeling. And a couple of recent songs of mine, as yet unrecorded, came back into view. They seemed to fit well with the others. Having half a dozen songs now that were talking to each other helped me write a couple more. This is how it goes. One thing leads to another. You never quite know what’s happening ‘til you’re in the middle of it.

I started to imagine a soul revue type record performed live in the studio with a variety of singers and the one band. I’d fallen in love with Clairy Browne and The Bangin’ Rackettes’ Love Letter, the sound of it as well as the song, so invited Clairy and the producer of that record, Steve Schram, to get involved. I’d seen Kira Puru perform One Eye Open live on YouTube and thought she might be the one to nail I Don’t Know What I’d Do, a song left off ‘Spring and Fall’ because I couldn’t sing it myself yet. It needed a torch singer who could balance light and dark. Plus, I loved the way she sang with a big glass of red wine never out of her hand. She, Clairy and Steve, thankfully, all said yes. Meanwhile Vika and Linda had started singing live the two songs Dan and I had written. The stew was simmering on the stove.

From February 17th to March 1st this year we camped in Soundpark Studios, Northcote, right by Merri Creek and recorded a song a day. Sundays off. Our general routine was to rehearse with the band in the morning, getting the song into some kind of shape sonically and piecing out a rough arrangement. The singers would come in later and take it home. We finished all the songs we had in mind a day early so I had time to write a gospel song Hasn’t It Rained as an album closer.

The band comprises Peter Luscombe, drums and percussion; Bill McDonald, bass; Ash Naylor guitar, electric mainly; Cam Bruce, piano and organ; Vika and Linda, harmonies when they aren’t singing lead; and me on rhythm guitar. guests on one song Keep On Coming Back For More.” PK July 1, 2014

● Melbourne Ska Orchestra Since their debut release in March 2013, this 18 to 25 piece ramshackle train of upbeat goodness have been smashing audiences in Australia and New Zealand picking up awards and nominations aplenty. 6

Comprising many of Australia’s best musicians, Melbourne Ska Orchestra’s legendary stage performances, incorporating a 15 piece horn troupe, fronted by NICKY BOMBA (of Trio fame) are set to ignite the Mossvale crowds.

● The Cat Empire THE CAT EMPIRE are excited to be playing Summer Of Soul for the first time in 2015. The Cat Empire are proudly born and bred Melbourne musicians, and love an opportunity to play regional Victoria shows. The band played their 1000th show together back in March 2014, and have spent the rest of the year touring the world, taking their unique style of festival music to big stages around the globe. Now a fully independent band, these guys released their album Steal The Light in 2013, debuting top 20 on charts in 6 countries. The Empire Horns will be along for the show, the band have some new music in the set, and plenty of old tunes too. Dancing shoes essential.

● MoJo Ju Ju Set to breakneck rhythms and hard¬‐boiled stories from life on the road, Mojo Juju draws inspiration from the Jazz age, early blues and Latin American ‘Pachuco’ culture of the 1930’s and 1940’s.

● Perch Creek The Perch Creek Family Jugband are a band of five energetic multiinstrumentalists and vocalists, four of whom happen to be siblings. Their latest material introduces the world to a sound the group call “psychedelic jug band” – steampowered roots music plugged into 3,000 volts of inner city creative energy and a fearless spirit that sparkles with imagination and individuality.

● Marlon Williams Described as “the impossible love child of Elvis, Roy Orbison and Townes Van Zandt”, Marlon Williams won his first singing competition at the age of 11 at Lyttelton Main School NZ and was stuck trying to balance the seesaw of his love for the lost souls of bluegrass and hellfire with his deep reverence for sacred choral music. This set the course for his teenage years as he not only formed The Unfaithful Ways, winning the best song award in 2008, but toured Europe with the Catholic Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament Choir, supporting the Vienna Boys Choir. “It has always been a balancing act for me, walking the tightrope between the sinners of Saturday night and the sorry of Sunday morning, the cigarettes versus the frankincense. It’s always been music, and always will be… I guess I’m damned if I do and damned if I don’t.”

● BOMBINO (Niger) Thursday 12th March, 2015 Table Seating. BYO. All Ages, Doors 7pm, Show 8pm. Tickets: Concession $35 Adults $40. His debut Nomad debuted at #1 on the Billboard World Music album chart and iTunes World chart and has earned rave reviews from top media outlets around the world The album was recorded with 2013 Grammy Awardwinning Producer of the Year Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys at his Nashville studio, Easy Eye Sound.… “Utterly, utterly fantastic…” BBC. “A perfect match of sound and soul [that] introduces a new guitar hero.” Rolling Stone.

Bombino is a member of the Tuareg Ifoghas tribe, a nomadic people descended from the Berbers of North Africa; for centuries they have fought against colonialism and the imposition of strict Islamic rule. During his lifetime, the Tuareg people have fought the Niger government to secure their rights on numerous occasions, causing Bombino and his family to flee several times.

While living in Algeria and Libya in his teen years, Bombino’s friends played him videos of Jimi Hendrix and Mark Knopfler, among others, which they watched over and over in an effort to master their licks. Bombino worked regularly as a musician and also as a herder in the desert near Tripoli, spending many hours alone watching the animals and practicing his guitar.

He recalls the time he’s spent in the desert and those he has left behind during the upheavals that repeatedly sent him and his family into exile. It’s through the sound of his work, at least initially, that Bombino communicates with listeners outside his homeland. His simple but evocative lyrics are sung in the Tamasheck language of the Tuareg people of Niger.

“A heavyduty recalibration of desert blues.” ’UNCUT “Bombino is…a star. The lyrics aim to celebrate and protect Tuareg culture and identity.” New York Times…

When those guys get in front of you and Bombino is playing electric guitar, you don’t have to be in the desert. They will transform wherever they are. That’s what’s amazing about Bombino.” Dan Auerbach (BLACK KEYS)
