C’est dans ce contexte que s’articule la pensée politique de Joseph-Adolphe Chapleau. Influencé par les idées de Louis-Hippolyte LaFontaine et de George-Étienne Cartier, le jeune politicien est séduit par l’idée d’une nouvelle nation politique réunissant les deux peuples fondateurs formant alors le Canada. La pensée nationaliste de Chapleau se caractérise alors par un double idéal, soit celui de défendre les intérêts des Canadiens français tout en préservant l’unité de la Confédération canadienne. Au moment de la Grande Dépression de 1873, le politicien parvient à adapter sa pensée en regard du contexte économique difficile et domine ses adversaires, particulièrement les Castors : ce groupe de Conservateurs ultramontains dissidents des politiques de Chapleau. Ces derniers l’accusent de s’être allié aux Libéraux. Une fois sur la scène fédérale, Chapleau espère réaffirmer l’alliance entre les deux principales nations au Canada, mais se retrouve confronté à l’Affaire Riel qui ébranle le pays en entier. À partir de ce moment, la pensée politique de l’homme ne se retrouve plus en phase avec le contexte dans lequel il se trouve, ce qui motive ses nombreuses défaites personnelles dans les années qui suivent.

    L’Église, les libéraux et l’État : les livres de jeunesse publiés par Mame dans le Bas-Canada du milieu du 19e siècle Tangi Villerbu* Les années 1840-1850 sont pour le Bas-Canada celles de la recomposition. Après l’échec des Rébellions de 1837-1838, l’Acte d’Union de 1840 oblige à repenser le développement du Canada français. L’Église a trouvé une légitimité forte dans la défense de l’ordre colonial comme dans un ultramontanisme de plus en plus affirmé et tente de s’imposer comme force motrice de la société canadienne ; les libéraux se divisent, certains luttant toujours pour imposer leur vision nationale, d’autres passant des compromis tant avec l’Église qu’avec la Couronne. L’État de son côté relance un programme de scolarisation centralisé et appuyé sur un nouveau corps d’inspecteurs, signe visible d’une volonté de contrôle social parallèle à celle de l’Église. On se trouve là au carrefour de notions qui animent l’historiographie la plus récente du Canada : les problèmes entrelacés du poids de l’Église catholique et du libéralisme, de l’insertion de la société bas-canadienne dans une histoire globale, de l’émergence d’institutions productrices de normes sociales, culturelles, morales1. * Tangi Villerbu est maître de conférences en histoire contemporaine à l’Université de La Rochelle, membre du Centre de recherche en histoire internationale et atlantique (CRHIA, EA 1163), et membre associé du Centre d’études nord- américaines (CENA-MASCIPO, UMR 8130).
