One reason is that I wanted to explore the African diaspora more broadly than I had before, and my knowledge of English, French, and Dutch naturally led me to expand my research to several national contexts. Another is that I wanted this project to be interdisciplinary, combining history and biography with textual criticism. It has been an amazing journey, which was made pos- sible by the many excellent scholars this book relies on. Part of the pleasure in writing this book came from the people and institutions that provided access to both the primary and the second- ary material. -

Green A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2011 Committee: Ruth Wallis Herndon, Advisor Radhika Gajjala Graduate Faculty Representative Lillian Ashcraft-Eason Gretchen Holbrook Gerzina Rebecca Mancuso © 2011 Shirley Louise Swan Green All Rights Reserved iii Abstract Ruth Wallis Herndon, Advisor This dissertation examines the lives of William and Ben Franck, freeborn men of color, who used military service as a means to assert their manhood, gain standing in their community, and help to create free African American and African Canadian communities during the Revolutionary Era. It focuses on the lives and experiences of the Franck family from the 1750s, when Rufus Franck served in the French and Indian War, until the 1820s, when his younger son, Ben Franck, settled in Nova Scotia. At each step of the story, this study analyzes the communities of free people of color with whom the Franck brothers interacted. In doing so, this project challenges traditional narratives and stereotypes of African Americans during the Colonial and Revolutionary Eras. The Franck brothers’ individual histories, closely analyzed, have the power to expand the prism through which we view early American people of color, so that we see their reality more sharply in three ways. 1. The establishment of free families of color and communities throughout North America, from the pre-Revolutionary period until postwar America, was limited by social prejudices and legal prohibitions. -

Rationale This Teacher’s Guide for a Grade 11 or 12 English course of study will cater to a wide variety of teaching styles and approaches so that an educator can realize the many possibilities that The Book of Negroes(HarperCollins Canada, 2007) has to offer. Specific expectations are that students will develop critical-thinking skills that challenge their values and beliefs, explore historical links to the novel, understand an author’s motivation to write, and develop reflective skills so that they can connect to literature on many levels, including in relation to their own lives. A Word About the Content of the Novel Because of some disturbing scenes, it will be important for the teacher to know the students in order to determine the best approach for introducing the novel. Discussing words that some may find offensive will be critical. In addition, because of some explicit scenes, including ones of rape, infanticide and sexuality, it is recommended that teachers prepare an alternative assignment in case some students opt out for personal reasons. Teachers may wish to provide students with access to the illustrated version of the novel to accompany their reading and to allow them to gain further information about the novel’s social and historical context. Summary of the Novel As an old woman, Aminata Diallo is brought to London, England, in 1802, by abolitionists who are petitioning to end the slave trade. -

Chapter 8 Black Loyalist Hunger Prevention in Sierra Leone Cato Perkins and Isaac Anderson were hungry, and they were not alone. In October 1793 their hunger drove them from Free- town, Sierra Leone, to London, England. They had lived in Freetown for just over a year. Before moving to that small British colony on the upper Guinea coast, Anderson and Perkins had been enslaved in Revolutionary South Caro- lina, where they declared allegiance with their feet by running to the British during the war. Isaac Anderson threw in with the British as early as 1775, and in 1776 left for New York with Lord William Campbell. A man named John Perkins had enslaved Cato Perkins in Charleston, South Carolina—Perkins prob ably ran to the British during the siege of Charleston and possibly made it to New York with General Clinton. Thereafter the two men had lived free in Nova Scotia, before the Sierra Leone Company offered them the opportu- nity to migrate. In Freetown, Anderson, Perkins, and their fellow free black colonists distrusted the white people who now ruled them. In a move that by- passed the authority of their governor, the two men had traveled to England to directly petition the Sierra Leone Com pany. In London, they sent a draft of their petition to John Clarkson, their former governor in Sierra Leone, who now lived in England; they hoped he would listen to them and offer advice about approaching the com pany.1 Anderson and Perkins disliked their prospects in Africa. The Freetown col- ony was faltering, and although they hoped for “Land and [to] be able to make 178 BLACK LOYALIST HUNGER PREVENTION IN SiERRA LEONE 179 a Crop to support us” before the advent of “the rainy Season,” the com pany had not yet allotted land. -

In the extensive notes, Gilbert revealed his self-identification as an African and his longing to travel to Abyssinia to join his supposed kinsmen, the tribe of Gibberti (in the province of modern Djibouti). -

Herrmann ABSTRACT In 1800 black Loyalists in Sierra Leone participated in an event that historians have called a rebellion. Reinterpreting the 1800 rebellion as a food riot reveals more extensive black Loyalist political activity in the 1790s, greater cooperation between black Loyalists and white councilmen, and increased animosity between black Loyalists and Africans. Black Loyalists created food legislation with the approval of the Sierra Leone Council, but those laws fostered disagreements with Africans. When the Sierra Leone Council revoked the black Loyalists’ law-making abilities, colonists rioted to reclaim the political and legal rights that they developed through their food legislation. In September 1800, elected black Loyalists in Freetown, Sierra Leone posted laws that fixed butter, cheese, salt beef, salt pork, rice, rum, and sugar prices. -
