    Honors thesis SPECIALISTIC DEGREE COURSE of «Design of gardens, parks and landscape» Abstract «The Park of the Castle of Racconigi, an unique experience of restoring and managing» Tutor by Prof.ssa Maria Adriana GIUSTI Marco FERRARI Graduation session February 2016 Since 1980 - year of the acquisition by the State Property Administration - up to 2010, the 180 hectares of the park of the Castle of Racconigi benefited from the restoration involving, an estimate 18 million Euros of investments. In these thirty years, the works have been supervised by the architect Mirella Macera, a Superintendence of Cultural Heritage official and Director of the Manor since 1994. She had discovered and deeply understood the spirit of the park in the first place, having being hosted there with her family since 1983. Having lived there and having dealt with it throughout the years, she got to imagine and plan the most appropriate management strategies and to put together an efficient staff to pursue these objectives. After having opened to the public in 1992, the castle and the park hosted just over 16.000 visitors, while 14 years later, in 2006, the threshold of 200.000 visits was reached, getting more than 12 times the initial visitors. Therefore, Racconigi for that year was the third most visited museum in Piedmont. It was acknowledged as a UNESCO Heritage Site and registered in the European network «Natura 2000» as Site of Community Importance.     ARRE Study Days 2012 Royal Residences, History and Territory: the experience of Piedmont Reggia di Venaria (16 – 23 June 2012) This year the second edition of the “ARRE Study Days” will be held at the Reggia di Venaria, near Turin - the ancient capital of the State of Savoy - from Saturday, June 16 to Saturday, June 23, 2012. The Summer School is organised by the Department of Culture of Regione Piemonte and the Research Department of the Reggia di Venaria, in collaboration with the Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities – Regional Department for Cultural Heritage and Landscape of Piedmont. The theme of this year’s ARRE Summer School is Royal Residences, History and Territory: the experience of Piedmont. Piedmont is a region traditionally characterised by an industrial vocation, that made it one of the drivers of Italy’s development. However, deep changes have occurred over the past twenty years and the Region’s eminently industrial vocation has been replaced by tourist appeal. This process is particularly evident in the Region’s capital, Turin, a city that was regarded for years as Italy’s Detroit for its automotive industry and perceived as a grim factory town. In less than one generation, Turin has managed to restore the glory of its past as an ancient capital of baroque and successfully consolidated its new status as a major tourist destination. According to the data from the National Tourist Bureau during the Christmas Holidays of 2010-11 and 2011-12 tourists chose Turin over such fierce competitors as Venice, Florence and Milan: a scenario that would have been simply unthinkable only a decade ago.

The stability of an arch as a structural element in the thermal bath of King Carlo Alberto in the Royal Castle of Racconigi (on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1997) was assessed by the Acoustic Emission (AE) monitoring technique with application of classical inversion methods to recorded AE data. First, damage source location by means of triangulation techniques and signal frequency analysis were carried out. Then, the recently introduced method of natural time analysis was preliminarily applied to the AE time series in order to reveal possible entrance point to a critical state of the 20 monitored structural element. Finally, possible influence of the local seismic and micro-seismic activity on the stability of the monitored structure was investigated. The criterion to select relevant earthquakes was based on the estimation of the size of earthquake preparation zones. The presented results suggest the use of AE technique as a tool for detecting both ongoing structural damage processes and micro-seismic activity during preparation stages of seismic events.

DOI: https://doi.org/10.5334/ah.462 RESEARCH ARTICLE Pelagio Palagi’s Floating Castles: ‘Risorgimental Neo-Medievalism’, Architectural Ephemera, and Politics at the Court of Savoy Tommaso Zerbi In 1842, the court artist Pelagio Palagi (1775–1860) devised four temporary floating castles on the river Po for the remarkable urban celebrations for the nuptials of His Royal Highness Victor Emmanuel of Savoy- Carignan (1820–1878) to Her Imperial and Royal Highness Maria Adelaide of Habsburg (1822–1855) in Turin. The structures formed the central pieces of a broad medievalist programme that, during the reign of Charles Albert of Savoy-Carignan (1831–1849), brought the Middle Ages back to life in the Kingdom of Piedmont-Sardinia. Challenging the classicised image of the Sabaudian monarchy, this article insists that neo-medieval architecture and the architectural style that I call ‘Risorgimental neo-medievalism’ mirrored a calibrated medievalist and royalist strategy against the background of Italy’s ‘resurgence’. Counter- ing recurrent biases that read Italian revivalist architecture as an exercise in taste, it discusses Palagi’s designs as the tools of a political reworking of the Middle Ages, in open dialogue with the disciplines of architectural history and medievalism studies. By reading the urban festivities staged in the capital as a strategically orchestrated political act, this article assesses the medievalist initiatives, culminating in the spectacle on the river Po, as propagandistic vehicles to convey meaning to a vast public, which underscore the role of medievalist rhetoric in challenging the dominant classicist iconography and forging the ‘iden- tity’ of the modern Sabaudian nation.

    Builders Of United Italy By Rupert Sargent Holland Builders Of United Italy ALFIERI, THE POET ALFIERI was more than a great poet, he was the discoverer of a new national life in the scattered states of Italy. Putting aside consideration of his tragedies as literature, no student of the eighteenth century can fail to appreciate his influence over Italian thought. It was as though a people who had forgotten their nationality suddenly heard anew the stories of their common folk-lore. The race of Dante, of Petrarch, and of Tasso spoke again in the words of Alfieri. It was high time that disunited Italy should find a poet’s voice. There was no vigor, no resolution, no originality from Turin to Naples, people of all classes were sunk in apathy. No wonder that foreign lovers of mediæval Italy turned their eyes away from the seats of so much former glory; there seemed little hope in a people given over to trivial personal enjoyment. There was no liberty of speech or action—sentiment, reason, passion were all measured by the grand-ducal yard-stick. At about the middle of this artificial eighteenth century, in 1749, Vittorio Alfieri was born at Asti, in Piedmont. His parents were of the upper rank in the close social order of the small kingdom, his father Antonio Alfieri, a man of independent means, who, as one biographer has it, “had never soiled his mind with ambition or his hands with labor.” His mother was the widow of the Marquis of Cacherano, and had two daughters and a son before she married Antonio Alfieri.
