CairnsPlan – March 2009 3.14 Gordonvale – Goldsborough District 3.14.1 Description and Intent The Gordonvale – Goldsborough District is characterised by the natural features of the Mulgrave River, the Pyramid and the adjacent ranges, as well as by cane fields, the sugar mill and the commercial centre surrounding Norman Park in the centre of Gordonvale. Gordonvale be retained as a distinct community and the recognisable character and local heritage is maintained and enhanced. It is intended that the rural areas within the District should remain and that there should be a range of opportunities for residential living in the areas identified for urban development. There are opportunities for rural residential living in the Goldsborough Valley and in the area on the western side of the Gillies Highway closer to Gordonvale. A Local Store to service the residential population is appropriate for Goldsborough. Such a store should be located on Goldsborough Road, away from the recreational area along the river. This is consistent with the established planning intent. It is not intended that there should be any expansion of the areas identified for this purpose. It is intended that the areas identified for conventional residential living in the northern part of the District should be developed and consolidated. There are opportunities for medium density residential living in areas adjacent to the commercial centre, consistent with the established planning intent. Medium density residential development should complement the character of this part of Gordonvale. There is the opportunity for development of tourist accommodation, such as a caravan park, in an area adjacent to the intersection of the Bruce Highway and the Gillies Highway. -

COLLEGE OF MEDICINE AND DENTISTRY STUDENT ACCOMMODATION HANDBOOK This handbook provides information on your rights and responsibilities as a resident of the College’s Student Accommodation. Please read the handbook carefully before signing the Residential Code of Conduct, Conditions of Use and House Rules. Respect & Responsibility 1 ABOUT THE ACCOMMODATION The James Cook University College of Medicine and Dentistry manages student accommodation at Alice Springs, Atherton, Ayr, Babinda, Bowen, Charters Towers, Collinsville, Cooktown, Darwin, Dysart, Ingham, Innisfail, Mackay, Marreba, Moranbah, Mossman, Proserpine, Sarina, Thursday Island, Tully & Weipa. Regulations and guidelines The regulations of the College of Medicine and Dentistry Student Accommodation are designed to allow the maximum personal freedom within the context of community living. By accepting residency, you agree to comply with these conditions and other relevant University statutes, policies and standards for the period of occupancy. It is expected that Accommodation residents will be responsible in their conduct and will respect all amenities and equipment. Disciplinary processes are in place although it is hoped that these will rarely need to be used. Accommodation Managers The Accommodation Manager is responsible for all matters pertaining to the efficient and effective operation of the College Accommodation within the framework of JCU and College Polices and Regulations. 76 CHAPTER 4 THE REALITY BEHIND THE BRISBANE LINE ALLEGATIONS Curtin lacked expertise in defence matters. He did not understand the duties or responsibilities of military commanders and never attended Chiefs of Staff meetings, choosing to rely chiefly on the Governments public service advisers. Thus Shedden established himself as Curtins chief defence adviser. Under Curtin his influence was far greater than 1 it had ever been in Menzies day. Curtins lack of understanding of the role of military commanders, shared by Forde, created misunderstandings and brought about refusal to give political direction. These factors contributed to events that underlay the Brisbane Line controversy. Necessarily, Curtin had as his main purpose the fighting and the winning of the war. Some Labor politicians however saw no reason why the conduct of the war should prevent Labor introducing social reforms. Many, because of their anti-conscriptionist beliefs, were unsympathetic 2 to military needs. Conversely, the Army Staff Corps were mistrustful of their new masters. The most influential of their critics was Eddie Ward, the new Minister for Labour and National Service. His hatred of Menzies, distrust of the conservative parties, and suspicion of the military impelled him towards endangering national security during the course of the Brisbane Line controversy. But this lay in the future in the early days of the Curtin Government. Not a great deal changed immediately under Curtin. A report to Forde by Mackay on 27 October indicated that appreciations and planning for local defence in Queensland and New South Wales were based on the assumption that the vital area of Newcastle-Sydney-Port Kembla had priority in defence. -

FACT SHEET Keeping our roads running Cairns Regional Council is responsible for maintaining 1034km of sealed urban roads and 644km of rural roads on behalf of the community. This fact sheet provides an overview of what Council does to maintain and improve the condion of our roads. Annual road maintenance programs Road improvement programs for the 2016/2017 Each year, Council allocates funding to undertake reseal, asphalt financial year include: and pavement rehabilitaon programs to keep the roads in the Cairns region in good condion. Reseal and asphalt overlays ‐ $5.4 million; Pavement rehabilitaon ‐ $4 million; Reseal program: Resealing a road involves spraying the old stone Suburban enhancement program (eg. road shoulder sealing / sealed surface with hot bitumen and rolling in loose stones, of kerb and channel replacement) ‐ $4.5 million; between 7mm to 14mm in diameter, over the top. This process is Pothole repair and patching $1.25 million; used when the road structure underneath is in good condion but the surface needs another coat of black paint and stones to seal it. Street sweeping ‐ $1.1 million. Loose stones and so bitumen can be an annoyance aer sealing however, this seles aer a couple of weeks as the bitumen hardens. This process is a lile like painng a house to prevent it approximately a third of the cost of an asphalt overlay process and from wood rot in that it is the most cost‐effecve method used on can significantly extend the life of the original road. It is also the majority of our roads. environmentally friendly as the process is completed without the product having to be heated. -

Introduction Between 1913-1957 the Queensland Branch of the Australian Workers' Union (AWU) was the largest branch of the largest trade union in Australia. Throughout this period in Queensland the AWU accounted for approximately one third of all trade unionists in that state and at its peak claimed a membership in excess of 60 000. Consequenfly the AWU in Queensland was able to exert enormous influence over the labour movement in that state not only in industrial relations but also within the political sphere through its affiliation to the Australian Labor Party. From 1915-1957 the Labor Party in Queensland held office for all but the three years between 1929-1932. AWU officials and members dominated the Labor Cabinets of the period and of the eight Labor premiers five were members of the AWU, with two others closely aligned to the Union. Only the last Labor premier of the period, Vincent Clare Gair, owed no allegiance to the AWU. The AWU also used its numerical strength and political influence to dominate the other major decision-making bodies of Queensland's labour movement, most notably the Queensland Central Executive (QCE), that body's 'inner' Executive and the triennial Labor-in-Politics Convention.
