CENTRAL ARGENTINA by ANDREA CONSERVATION AND MANAGEMENT OF BIRDS IN AGROECOSYSTEMS IN EAST- CENTRAL ARGENTINA by ANDREA PAULA GOIJMAN (Under the Direction of MICHAEL J. CONROY) ABSTRACT Bird conservation, and associated ecosystem services, is challenged by agricultural intensification and expansion. In Pampas grassland and Espinal forest ecoregions of east-central Argentina these processes have been ongoing and rapid, requiring the assessment of their impact on biodiversity so as to recommend management alternatives. The objective of this study was to gather evidence to inform decision-making for bird conservation in agroecosystems, focusing on foraging guilds and potential ecosystem services provided. I evaluated the effects of land use on birds at a regional scale in the Pampas and Espinal, using 10 years of a regional bird monitoring program, modeling occupancy with hierarchical multi-species dynamic models using a Bayesian approach. At a local scale, I evaluated factors influencing the use of soybean fields and borders by birds, using bird surveys and arthropod sampling in 78 borders and 20 soybean fields, in four crop stages for two years. I analyzed bird occupancy using multiple-groups single- season models, separating field interior and edges, and fitting Poisson mixed models for counts of the orders of arthropods consumed by birds. I used structured decision making (SDM) to find optimal management strategies to integrate bird conservation with soybean agriculture. I demonstrated how the regional scale results can be used as a tool for decision-making, mapping species-based spatial distributions over time. Although potential ecosystem services offered by birds were distributed throughout the study area, few species could provide them in crop dominated areas. Most raptors, unlike other guilds, were associated with soybean. Most insectivore gleaners seemed unaffected by crops, suggesting their perception of landscape at smaller scales. Birds in soybean fields are mainly those common in agroecosystems, some likely providing pest control service, while most guilds benefited from native trees in borders. Counts of arthropods preyed by birds remained mostly constant throughout the soybean cycle. Finally, I identified the objectives of the SDM process: maximizing insectivorous birds and farmers’ well- being, while minimizing management costs. Reducing insecticide applications in soybean, and either planting trees in borders or no management, were the best decisions dependent on constraints of cost allocation and percent of managed border. So you want to stop every few kilometers to take pictures and when you look at those shots in your camera you know it will never capture the incredible landscape and the breathtaking feeling that you had during that moment. Then you realize it will be impossible to explain to your relatives once at home how sensational the trip was, so you breathe deeply and just enjoy the moment without caring about any other thing in life. This trip combines a large amount of quite contrasting environments and ecosystems, from the lush humid Yungas cloud forest to dry high Altiplano and Puna, stopping at various lakes and wetlands on various altitudes and ending on the drier upper Chaco forest.     Trinidad and Grenada Birding in the southern Caribbean Trinidad is situated just a few miles off the coast of Venezuela in South America and offers an ideal introduction to the birdlife of South America. The secret of the island's varied avifauna lies in the wide range of habitats, which includes high mountains, rainforests, marshes, agricultural lands and abandoned cocoa plantations. These diverse areas attract a wide range of birds from North and South America. Our base in Trinidad is the world-famous Asa Wright Nature Centre, which is located within tropical rainforest habitats. Grenada in contrast is a tiny island famous for the production of spices, notably nutmeg. The island has several interesting areas for birds, including the Mount Harman Estate which is home to the critically endangered Grenada Dove. Lowther, Field Museum Brood parasitism is an awkward term to describe an interaction between two species in which, as in predator-prey relationships, one species gains at the expense of the other. Brood parasites "prey" upon parental care. Victimized species usually have reduced breeding success, partly because of the additional cost of caring for alien eggs and young, and partly because of the behavior of brood parasites (both adults and young) which may directly and adversely affect the survival of the victim's own eggs or young. About 1% of all bird species, among 7 families, are brood parasites. The 5 species of brood parasitic “cowbirds” are currently all treated as members of the genus Molothrus. Host selection is an active process. Not all species co-occurring with brood parasites are equally likely to be selected nor are they of equal quality as hosts. Rather, to varying degrees, brood parasites are specialized for certain categories of hosts. Brood parasites may rely on a single host species to rear their young or may distribute their eggs among many species, seemingly without regard to any characteristics of potential hosts. Lists of species are not the best means to describe interactions between a brood parasitic species and its hosts. Such lists do not necessarily reflect the taxonomy used by the brood parasites themselves nor do they accurately reflect the complex interactions within bird communities (see Ortega 1998: 183-184). Host lists do, however, offer some insight into the process of host selection and do emphasize the wide variety of features than can impact on host selection.

Lowther, Field Museum Brood parasitism is an awkward term to describe an interaction between two species in which, as in predator-prey relationships, one species gains at the expense of the other. Brood parasites "prey" upon parental care. Victimized species usually have reduced breeding success, partly because of the additional cost of caring for alien eggs and young, and partly because of the behavior of brood parasites (both adults and young) which may directly and adversely affect the survival of the victim's own eggs or young. About 1% of all bird species are brood parasites. Host selection is an active process. Not all species co-occurring with brood parasites are equally likely to be selected nor are they of equal quality as hosts. Rather, to varying degrees, brood parasites are specialized for certain categories of hosts. Brood parasites may rely on a single host species to rear their young or may distribute their eggs among many species, seemingly without regard to any characteristics of potential hosts. Lists of species are not the best means to describe interactions between a brood parasitic species and its hosts. Such lists do not necessarily reflect the taxonomy used by the brood parasites themselves nor do they accurately reflect the complex interactions within bird communities (see Ortega 1998: 183-184). Host lists do, however, offer some insight into the process of host selection and do emphasize the wide variety of features than can impact on host selection.

    COTINGA 5 Records of wintering Hudson’s Black-Tyrant Knipolegus hudsoni at the Estación Biológica del Beni, Bolivia Robin C. Brace, Jon Hornbuckle and James W. Pearce-Higgins The genus Knipolegus comprises 10 medium­ sized tyrant flycatchers, of which three are known austral migrants12. The most marked migrations are undertaken by Hudson’s Black- Tyra n t K. h u d so n i, which breeds in chaco woodland in central Argentina (from Córdoba south to Río Negro, and south-west Buenos Aires province). It withdraws from Argentina, migrat­ ing northwards to Bolivia and extreme south-west Brazil2, although surprisingly there are very few records from Paraguay7. Since the species is relatively little known and considered “near-threatened”4, details concerning its win­ ter status in Bolivia are noteworthy, and add to the increasing body of information on austral migration in the Neotropics3. In Bolivia, K. hudsoni has been noted throughout the dry season (which runs from mid- May to mid-September) in small numbers (e.g. daily maxima of 129) from Beni and Santa Cruz departments1,10, with records also from La Paz (Caranavi), Chuquisaca and Pando1,11. Sightings in Santa Cruz show that the species occupies a range of habitats including chaco, disturbed cerrado, weedy pasture and even suburban gar­ dens5,8. In Beni, it is reported to occur in trees and bushes at woodland and road edges9, which agrees with our observations made between July and September (1994 and 1995) at the Estación Biológica del Beni (EBB) (14°52'S 66°20'W, and 200 m above sea-level), in an area of forest is­ lands (of 1–5 ha in size) within seasonally wet savanna.
