Brace, Jon Hornbuckle and James W. Pearce-Higgins The genus Knipolegus comprises 10 medium­ sized tyrant flycatchers, of which three are known austral migrants12. The most marked migrations are undertaken by Hudson’s Black- Tyra n t K. h u d so n i, which breeds in chaco woodland in central Argentina (from Córdoba south to Río Negro, and south-west Buenos Aires province). It withdraws from Argentina, migrat­ ing northwards to Bolivia and extreme south-west Brazil2, although surprisingly there are very few records from Paraguay7. Since the species is relatively little known and considered “near-threatened”4, details concerning its win­ ter status in Bolivia are noteworthy, and add to the increasing body of information on austral migration in the Neotropics3. In Bolivia, K. hudsoni has been noted throughout the dry season (which runs from mid- May to mid-September) in small numbers (e.g. daily maxima of 129) from Beni and Santa Cruz departments1,10, with records also from La Paz (Caranavi), Chuquisaca and Pando1,11. Sightings in Santa Cruz show that the species occupies a range of habitats including chaco, disturbed cerrado, weedy pasture and even suburban gar­ dens5,8. In Beni, it is reported to occur in trees and bushes at woodland and road edges9, which agrees with our observations made between July and September (1994 and 1995) at the Estación Biológica del Beni (EBB) (14°52'S 66°20'W, and 200 m above sea-level), in an area of forest is­ lands (of 1–5 ha in size) within seasonally wet savanna. In common with Parker’s9 sightings (June 1989) and those of White et al.13 at the EBB (July–August 1992), a small number of solitary birds (maximum of six) were noted on most days, with both males and female/immature males present. Lowther, Field Museum Brood parasitism is an awkward term to describe an interaction between two species in which, as in predator-prey relationships, one species gains at the expense of the other. Brood parasites "prey" upon parental care. Victimized species usually have reduced breeding success, partly because of the additional cost of caring for alien eggs and young, and partly because of the behavior of brood parasites (both adults and young) which may directly and adversely affect the survival of the victim's own eggs or young. About 1% of all bird species, among 7 families, are brood parasites. The 5 species of brood parasitic “cowbirds” are currently all treated as members of the genus Molothrus. Host selection is an active process. Not all species co-occurring with brood parasites are equally likely to be selected nor are they of equal quality as hosts. Rather, to varying degrees, brood parasites are specialized for certain categories of hosts. Brood parasites may rely on a single host species to rear their young or may distribute their eggs among many species, seemingly without regard to any characteristics of potential hosts. Lists of species are not the best means to describe interactions between a brood parasitic species and its hosts. Such lists do not necessarily reflect the taxonomy used by the brood parasites themselves nor do they accurately reflect the complex interactions within bird communities (see Ortega 1998: 183-184). Host lists do, however, offer some insight into the process of host selection and do emphasize the wide variety of features than can impact on host selection.

    Studies in Avian Biology No. 32:32-53 DIVERSITY AND ENDEMISM IN TIDAL-MARSH VERTEBRATES RUSSELL GREENBERG AND JESúS E. MALDONADO Abstract. Tidal marshes are distributed patcliily, predominantly along the mid- to high-latitude coasts of the major continents. The greatest extensions of non-arctic tidal marshes are found along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts of North America, but local concentrations can be found in Great Britain, northern Europe, northern Japan, northern China, and northern Korea, Argentina-Uruguay-Brazil, Australia, and New Zealand. We tallied the number of terrestrial vertebrate species that regularly occupy tidal marshes in each of these regions, as well as species or subspecies that are largely restricted to tidal marshes. In each of the major coastal areas we found 8-21 species of breeding birds and 13-25 species of terrestrial mammals. The diversity of tidal-marsh birds and mammals is highly inter-correlated, as is the diversity of species restricted to saltmarshes. These values are, in turn, correlated with tidal-marsh area along a coastline. We estimate approximately seven species of turtles occur in brackish or saltmarshes worldwide, but only one species is endemic and it is found in eastern North America. A large number of frogs and snakes occur opportunistically in tidal marshes, primarily in southeastern United States, particularly Florida. Three endemic snake taxa are restricted to tidal marshes of eastern North America as well. Overall, only in North America were we able to find documentation for multiple taxa of terrestrial vertebrates associated with tidal marshes. These include one species of mammal and two species of birds, one species of snake, and one species of turtle.

    Group of Red-spectacled Amazon searching for seeds in the Araucaria tree (Eduardo Patrial) SOUTHERN BRAZIL 27 March – 11 April 2018 By #epatrialbirding Despite being a tour right at the beginning of autumn - not the richest time to visit the Atlantic Forest - this 2018 Southern Brazil trip was still fully packed with birds with over four hundred (410) species recorded. This is a tour that usually surprises participants by offering a very scenic route in the country in some of most diverse and singular areas from the whole Brazilian Atlantic Forest. Besides achieving most of the regional and localised endemics present in southern São Paulo and in the Brazilian South region, the tour this time of year also revealed the singular seeding period of the Araucaria tree in the southern plateaus together with the spectacular migration of Red- spectacled Amazon, a refined touch for the trip. We recorded a total of fifty three (53) genuine Brazilian endemic species and over a hundred and thirty (137) endemics from the biome Atlantic Forest. On this fabulous trip starting from Guarulhos (São Paulo) international airport in Brazil, we first visited the mighty a Intervales State Park at Serra do Paranapiacaba, a large branch of Serra do Mar in southern São Paulo which is part of the largest continuous Atlantic Forest remnant in the country. The park offers good facilities and in three full days its dense montane and bamboo rich Atlantic Forest was responsible for nearly half of the checklist. This time, however, we decided to make it happen. An important factor in the decision process was that Camilla wanted to learn to dance a little tango, and where better to do so than in Argentina? And of course, getting to eat grilled beef with a nice wine added to the desire to go there. Having visited the incredible Iguazú Falls on the Brazilian side many years ago, this was a perfect opportunity for a return, and to see the falls from the Argentinian side. We also wanted to stay at an estancia and after some searching on the internet, we found a nice-looking one in Uruguay. Punta del Este was regarded a must visit, and adding a couple of areas along the Atlantic coast completed the itinerary. The only birding decided beforehand was a half day in Reserva Ecologica Costanera Sur in Buenos Aires, and early morning outings in Iguazú. For birding in Uruguay, I did no planning. Very few birders seem to go there, and as a result finding useful information was a challenge. Therefore, I soon came to the conclusion I would not bother to plan anything in this respect, and thus simply bird “randomly”. As was expected, daytime temperatures were baking hot, dry in Buenos Aires and on the Uruguayan campos, but humid in Iguazú.

Se registraron dos especies nuevas para el chaco de Paraguay, y 22 especies nuevas para las zonas del Alto Chaco o Matogrosense (sensu Hayes 1995).
