Professor of Medicine & Therapeutics University College Dublin School of Medicine Mater Misericordiae University Hospital, Ireland East Hospital Group Ref: 011524 The UCD School of Medicine is Ireland’s leading research-intensive medical school and its clinical partner, Mater Misericordiae University Hospital is a national healthcare leader within Ireland’s largest acute hospital group, Ireland East Hospital Group. The School has over 1,600 undergraduate and graduate students and offers the country’s only undergraduate diagnostic radiography training programme. The School enrols 230 medical students and 80 radiography or biomedical science students annually into its innovative direct entry and graduate entry programmes. It has an extensive portfolio of fundamental, clinical and translational research led by over 75 principal investigators with research income of €12.5 million per annum and grants under management to the value of €75 million. Our preclinical education is delivered at the UCD Health Sciences Centre which is also home to Schools of Nursing, Physiotherapy and Public Health. Our medical education leadership is drawn from academic staff based at Ireland’s first choice University and clinicians located across the largest network of acute hospitals and primary care centres in the country. The UCD School of Medicine is committed to advancing translational research that through scientific enquiry enhances our understanding of human diseases leading to improved health through prevention, better diagnosis and more effective intervention. Our translational research strategy combines areas of biomedical and clinical research strength to impact on diseases of global significance and national importance. Our research is focussed on key thematic areas of Inflammation and Medicine, Vascular biology and Diabetes using many approaches including cellular and molecular biology, bioinformatics and proteomics, through whole organism disease models to patient–based clinical and population studies. This multidisciplinary strength provides a stimulating environment in which scientists and clinicians can interact in relevant translational research. Academic Responsibilities Together with existing academic and clinical staff, the appointee will be expected to: Develop and maintain an internationally competitive research group, attracting external peer-reviewed research funding and will supervising to completion MD and/or PhD students. Provide academic leadership in medicine and therapeutics and expert instruction to medical students during their clinical attachments. Assume an academic and clinical leadership role within UCD School of Medicine and Mater Misericordiae University Hospital respectively. Undertake a leadership role within Dublin Academic Medical Centre and the Ireland East Hospital Group as appropriate. Contribute to postgraduate specialist medical education including, as appropriate, in higher specialist training through the Royal College of Physicians in Ireland. Clinical Responsibilities Together with existing academic and clinical staff, the appointee will be expected to: Deliver a modern, professional and efficient clinical service within the relevant hospital department as appropriate. Contribute to the inpatient and outpatient care of patients presenting to the hospital for acute care and chronic disease management. Participate in ward rounds, clinical conferences, outpatient clinics and an on-call clinical service rota as appropriate to the particular discipline. Supervise the training of non-consultant medical and/or laboratory staff. Supervise quality assurance within the relevant department and participate in all relevant external quality assurance and accreditation programmes. Participate in appropriate development activities to ensure the best possible clinical service is provided to patients and consultant colleagues. Lead and participate in hospital-wide quality assurance initiatives in conjunction with clinical colleagues. Ref: 011524 Page | 4 Professor of Medicine & Therapeutics UCD School of Medicine Candidate Profile The ideal candidate will match the following profile: A clinician scientist who is a dynamic leader and collaborative in nature. Have a strong track record of clinical, translational or fundamental biomedical research in a field of strategic relevance to the School. Demonstrated ability to build and lead a successful research team and collaborative research programmes. Demonstrate sustained research productivity as evidenced by lead authorship of original research articles published in high impact publications, sustained peer reviewed grant income and/or the generation of new intellectual property. Pursue research which is aligned with the School, University and Hospital research strategies. The appointee will be a dynamic, inquisitive leader who is driven to provide the best clinical care for patients and who teaches and inspires the next generation to do the same. Appointment Particulars The appointee will be employed by University College Dublin as an academic member of staff at the UCD School of Medicine based at Mater Misericordiae University Hospital. The candidate will be employed on an Academic Consultant Type B contract for 39 hours per week with approximately 19.5 hours per week devoted to academic and 19.5 hours per week assigned to clinical duties. This is a permanent academic consultant appointment and a senior clinical leadership role. University appointments are made subject to defined academic benchmarks and hence UCD reserves the right to appoint at a lower academic rank if appropriate. Applications are welcomed from a consultant physician with any sub-specialty interest. The clinical duties will depend on the specialty of the successful candidate who will be expected to integrate within the relevant clinical service. Reporting Structure As a UCD academic staff member, the appointee will report to the Head, UCD School of Medicine via the relevant Section Leader, Medicine & Medical Specialties. As Professor, the appointee may be requested to take on this Section Leader responsibility at the time of appointment or at another point in their career. The appointee will be required to deliver a level of performance consistent with the School’s Academic Workload model which balances teaching, research and clinical work commitments. As a member of the MMUH, the appointee will be expected to deliver an agreed clinical practice plan which will be periodically assessed by the Clinical Director. Both the hospital and the University expect the candidate to participate in continuous professional development activities.
