UCD Professor of Paediatrics University College Dublin Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Dublin UCD School of Medicine & Medical Science Children’s Health Matters Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Crumlin is Ireland’s largest paediatric hospital caring for a large Dublin and South Leinster catchment area and is the national centre for the provision of many tertiary care services for children. Founded in 1956, the hospital is the national centre for a range of clinical specialties including childhood cancers and blood disorders, cardiac diseases, major burns, cystic fibrosis and rheumatology. The hospital is a leading teaching centre for medical and nursing students from University College Dublin, Trinity College Dublin and the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland completing their undergraduate clinical training in paediatrics. Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Crumlin has a long tradition of research and innovation and it is home to the National Children’s Research Centre and the National Centre for Medical Genetics. Together with its academic partners, the hospital promotes and fosters collaborative research among clinicians, nurses, scientists and allied health professionals and support staff to maximise the impact of research on the health and wellbeing of children. University College Dublin is Ireland’s largest and leading research-intensive university. With an annual research income of over €75 million, the University is responsible for one quarter of all postgraduate students and almost a third of all doctoral graduates produced within Ireland annually. For over 150 years, the UCD School of Medicine and Medical Science has been Ireland’s leading medical school and today educates over 1,600 undergraduate medicine, radiography and science students as well as over 450 graduate students within over 60 specialist medicine training programmes. Both organisations are committed to building on a long standing partnership to deliver high quality paediatric care services, to advance research which leads to a better understanding of relevant diseases and to create the next generation of clinicians by training medical students in paediatrics. The UCD Professor of Paediatrics will be expected to assume a leadership position in the hospital and the University as well as representing both organisations on national and international advisory boards and professional bodies. Candidate Profile The ideal candidates will match the following profile: • An experienced clinician who is a dynamic leader and collaborative in nature. • Have a strong track record of clinical, translational or fundamental biomedical research in a field of paediatrics of relevance to the institutions. • Demonstrate sustained research productivity as evidenced by lead authorship of original research articles published in high impact publications, sustained peer reviewed grant income and/or the generation of new intellectual property. • Have extensive experience in undergraduate and graduate training and be familiar with modern educational approaches. • Possess strong leadership skills, have a capacity to build strong collaborative links with academic and clinical colleagues and the ability to represent both the hospital and University in a confident and professional manner. Qualifications The University, Hospital and the Health Service Executive have defined the qualifications and expertise for an Academic Consultant Professor in Paediatrics as: - Registration as a specialist in the Specialist Division of the Register of Medical Practitioners maintained by the Medical Council in Ireland in the specialty of paediatrics OR (a) Registration as a specialist in the Specialist division of the Register of Medical Practitioners maintained by the Medical Council in Ireland in any specialty. And Page 3 (b) Two years postgraduate training and experience in related paediatric specialties Possession of a higher degree relevant to the post (MD, PhD or equivalent). Employment Summary The appointee will be employed by University College Dublin as an academic member of staff at the UCD School of Medicine & Medical Science. The appointee will have a clinical appointment at Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Crumlin, Dublin as a consultant. It is currently envisaged that the teaching, research and clinical care activities currently undertaken at Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Crumlin will transfer completely or in part to this new hospital. As a result of these developments, the primary location of this post is expected to change in the future to the National Paediatric Hospital. Principal Duties & Responsibilities The appointees will be expected to assume academic leadership positions within the University, School and hospital in education &training, research & innovation and clinical care. Specifically: Education & Training 1. To act, as required, as the academic leader of the subject of paediatrics, working with the other staff within the subject area in the School and in affiliated hospitals, to oversee the design, delivery, assessment and quality of UCD undergraduate and graduate modules and programmes. 2. To supervise graduate students (PhD, MD) and postdoctoral scientists. 3. To support the Head of School in assuring the highest standards of teaching and learning within the UCD undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. 4. To carry out the duties of a Professor of Paediatrics as a senior academic, head of subject and/or, as required, head of academic section discharging normal teaching, research and administrative duties.
