“For me, the MA in Gender, Sexuality and Culture was both life-changing and life-affirming. It challenged my assumptions and opened up new ways of thinking, new fields of knowledge. I came to the Masters as a mature student and it was apparent from the outset that the instructors valued the life experience and points of view that I brought to the classes, which really built my confidence. The instructors allowed me to gear my learning curve and assignments around my field of interest and provided me with the in-depth theoretical and historical frameworks that I needed to progress to the PhD. But, as a mature student, the programme worked for me on many other levels. The teaching team helped me fine tune my critical writing skills, all the while being sensitive to the needs, flexibility and support systems that mature students need at this level. While writing the thesis, my Masters supervisor set deadlines and meetings that suited my family commitments. When the time came to apply for a PhD and find a supervisor I received excellent support and guidance, which is still in place today.”

”For as long as I can remember I always wanted to do engineering, and I chose to do Mechanical Engineering in UCD because I had a ‘hands on’ approach to all things mechanical (especially engines) while growing up, and I wanted to learn how and why things work the way they do. After I finished my undergraduate degree, I did a masters course (MSc) in racing engine design in the UK, after which I decided to come back to UCD to do my PhD research in gasoline emissions. I’m nearly finished my PhD research and I’m currently employed by Ferrari in Italy, where the work I do on engine design and testing feeds into my research. I’ve worked really hard to make this dream of working on high-performance cars a reality and UCD has given me the platform.”
