STANFORD SUBMITTED TO SCRIPPS COLLEGE IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE DEGREE OF BACHELOR OF ARTS PROFESSOR PEDACE PROFESSOR CHAUDHARY APRIL 20, 2012 2 THE IMPACTS OF THE FUKUSHIMA DAIICHI NUCLEAR DISASTER ON ELECTRICITY CONSUMPTION: AN EXAMINATION OF TEPCO’S DAILY LOAD CURVE This paper analyzes the effects of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster on Tokyo Electric Power Company’s (TEPCO) electricity load using alternative event study methodology. The data set includes TEPCO’s published hourly loads from January 1, 2008 to December 31, 2011. Four time series regressions are used to analyze the disaster’s effect on TEPCO’s load curve at an hourly and aggregate level. By examining the hourly impacts of the disaster, this paper provides commentary on the effects of the disaster on the daily load curve. -

This research was completed in August 2012 and was made possible through an award provided by the University of British Columbia. 1 ABSTRACT The Fukushima Daiichi nuclear accident that followed the March 11, 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami o! the coast of Japan has had far-reaching consequences. In order to properly assess and predict the impact of this event on industry, political opinion, and government policy, it is important to examine the political aftermath of the Three Mile Island and Chernobyl accidents of March 28, 1979 and April 26, 1986 respectively. By considering these three incidents with regard to actions taken in response by the United States, Germany, and Japan, this paper grounds a dynamic issue in both temporal and geographical comparative perspective. That, at least, was a popular view espoused after the disaster of March 11, 2011—in the press, by the talking heads in the international media, and across the blogosphere.1 A nuclear meltdown in such a densely populated, well- developed nation could scarcely do anything less than utterly transform how nuclear energy would be seen, used, and not used for years to come. That was the immediate reaction. Its primary mandate was – and is – two-fold: to promote energy security amongst its member countries through collective response to physical disruptions in oil supply, and provide authoritative research and analysis on ways to ensure reliable, affordable and clean energy for its 29 member countries and beyond. The IEA carries out a comprehensive programme of energy co-operation among its member countries, each of which is obliged to hold oil stocks equivalent to 90 days of its net imports. Hur Japan, världens tredje största ekonomi, hanterar gapet mellan efterfrågan på och utbud av energi kan ge viktiga lärdomar och inspiration kring hur samhället kan ställas om mot en mer hållbar och mindre elintensiv riktning – och hur innovationer kan bidra till den omställningen. -

DOI 10.1515/cj-2015-0006 Contemporary Japan 2015; 27(2): 89–110 Open Access Yuki Abe The nuclear power debate after Fukushima: a text-mining analysis of Japanese newspapers Abstract: This paper analyzes the debate on nuclear power after the Fukushima accident by using a text-mining approach. Texts are taken from the editorial artic- les of five major Japanese newspapers, Asahi Shinbun, Mainichi Shinbun, Nikkei Shinbun, Sankei Shinbun and Yomiuri Shinbun. After elucidating their different views on nuclear power policy, including general issues such as radiation risks, renewable energy and lessons from the meltdown, the paper reveals two main strands of arguments. Newspapers in favor of denuclearization appeal to “demo- cratic values.” They advocate public participation in decisions on future energy policy and criticize the closed-off administration of nuclear energy. Meanwhile, pro-nuclear newspapers adopt a “technological nationalistic” stance, claiming that denuclearization will weaken Japan’s superiority in the field of nuclear power technology. In other words, the debate about the nuclear power is not merely about energy supply, but also about the choices facing Japanese society over visions for the future after the events of Fukushima. Caused by a tsunami that was triggered by an M9.0 earthquake off the north-eastern coast of Japan, this accident not only forced nearly 110,000 local residents to evacuate their houses, but also raised concerns over the radioactive contamination of food, water and air.
