César Vallejo (3) A century ago, men still thought they were masters of the situation: they thought they (who were already undeniably modern) could do whatever they liked with modernity, either accept it (in whole, in parts or with modifications) or reject it (by closing the door on it or reverting its effects). Their thought sprang from a world in which modernity, though relentlessly pursuing its course, was still some way from achieving planetary reach and could not demonstrate to the collective mind the totalizing range of its aspiration or the radicalism of the changes it was already introducing into human life.
