(1) Sixth Sunday of Easter May 6, 2018

First Reading: The Pastor’s Keyboard—Msgr. Richard Huneger Acts 10:25-26, 34-35, 44-48 Responsorial: “And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my Church!” (MaƩhew 16) Psalm 98:1, 2-3, 3-4 Going on a pilgrimage to is like making a special visit to St. Peter himself, since the Second Reading: is the successor of St Peter, to whom the Lord Jesus entrusted the care of His Church. Just a 1 John 4:7-10 few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to accompany a young adult pilgrimage to Rome (organized Gospel: by Regina Magazine) and I hope to share a liƩle bit some of the spiritual fruits of this trip with all of you. The first day aŌer our arrival, we aƩended the Papal Mass in St. Peter’s Square. You can John 15:9-17 watch the full papal mass on YouTube (you can even see me among the priests if you look really

closely!). It was a beauƟful mass with a large crowd of people gathered from many naƟons for “Whoever loves me will keep Divine Mercy Sunday. Most of the mass was in Italian, however the first reading was in Spanish my word, says the Lord, and my and the second reading was in English. There were also several parts of the mass that were sung Father will love him and we will in LaƟn: the “Gloria,” the “Credo” the “Holy, Holy, Holy,” the “Lamb of God,” the “Our Father” and come to him.” a few other musical pieces. The use of LaƟn in the Sacred Liturgy provides a special language for the liturgy and unites people from various naƟons and languages. For these reasons, the Second VaƟcan Council called for the conƟnued use of LaƟn and Gregorian chant in the Holy Mass. For these same reasons, here at St Joseph’s, we are planning to use the Missa de Angelis at all masses (Spanish, English, and Vietnamese) during the summer months (June, July, and August), thus mod- eling our liturgy on that of the Pope. At the beauƟful Basilica of St. Peters at the VaƟcan, we were able to go on the “scavi” tour to visit the tomb of St. Peter directly beneath the Basilica. Many other saintly are buried there at St. Peter’s Basilica, including St. John Paul II. What a bless- ing it is to belong to the Church founded by Christ Himself who gave the care of his Church to St. Peter and his successors, the popes! Going to Rome, one really gets a sense of how much history May 5 & 6. 2018 and how many naƟons are gathered into the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church. Finally, from the Holy Stairs, we went to the Basilica of the Holy Cross where are kept precious Liturgy Conference relics from the Passion of Christ including: a piece of the True Cross of Christ, two thorns from the to be held in Salem, Oregon, crown of thorns, one of the Nails from the crucifixion, a finger joint of St. Thomas that might have June 27-30, 2018 at touched the sacred wounds of Christ, a piece of the cross of the good thief, and finally the St. Joseph “Titulus” of the Cross where Pilate had inscribed “Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews” in Hebrew, and the Salem Convention Greek, and LaƟn.
