Biographical note Ralph Story was born Ralph Bernard Snyder on August 19, 1920 in Kalamazoo, Michigan. From an early age, Story was involved in broadcasting, working as a part time radio announcer during high school and college. Story dropped out of college to pursue a career in radio full time but his plans were put on hold when he joined the Air Force during World War II. Story served as a flight instructor and P-51 Pilot, flying 63 missions over Europe during the war. After the war, Story resumed his career as a radio announcer and program director working in Buffalo, New York for CBS radio affiliate WGR. In 1948, Story was transferred to Los Angeles where he was assigned the duties of program director and morning DJ at KNX. Subsequently, he changed his last name from Snyder to Story after the suggestion of the station's managers. The popular segment developed into a local program about people and places in Los Angeles called Ralph Story's Los Angeles. Ralph Story's Los Angeles was a half-hour television program broadcast on KNXT in Los Angeles from January 14th, 1964 to November 23rd, 1969. During that time, 249 programs were created from 660 segments filmed mostly in and around Los Angeles. The program immediately became the top-rated local program in Los Angeles and remained in that lofty position until its finale in 1969. Story in Hollywood aired on KABC from 1971-1973, and featured episodes about different aspects of Hollywood, including stunt women, extras, autograph collectors and celebrity photographers. In the 1970s, Story became the co-host of AM-Los Angeles, a morning news show that was the predecessor to Good Morning America. Story stayed in Los Angeles once the show moved to New York City. He continued working in the industry until the mid-1980s when he retired and moved with his wife to Los Olivos. In 1984, the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences awarded Story their highest honor, the Governors Award. Ralph Story died on September 26, 2006 from emphysema. He began producing records professionally in the s and has gone on to become a successful singer in Hong Kong and Asia. Awards won. Both Jackie and Alan go out into the hall and bump into May, and Jackie has to cover his tracks by pretending that Alan knows that Lorelei is in Jackie's bedroom. To tell you the truth I hardly remember this film. Ones opinions to reserve I am Jackie Chan : some other viewers should be able to determine in regards to publication. Was this review helpful? EnterText 6.1 SABRINA YU Can a Wuxia Star Act? Martial Arts, Acting, and Critical Responses to Jet Li’s Once Upon A Time In China Introduction It has been commonplace in western critical discourse to state that action stars can’t act. This seems particularly true when it comes to trans-bordering Chinese action stars like Jet Li. Criticism of his acting skills in his English-language films can be easily picked up from the press: Without the fight scenes, though, this film (Romeo Must Die) would be a bust… ‘Jet is our special effect,’ says Silver, summing up his star’s appeal neatly.1 Li’s martial arts skills are as brilliant as his acting skills aren’t.2 The action is fun and ultra-violent, the story is satisfactorily ridiculous and the acting is non-existent.3 “Good martial artist with limited acting ability” seems to represent a popular view of Chinese martial arts stars and indeed this is how they are often used in Hollywood films. Nevertheless, such a view also reveals a deep-rooted bias, i.e. the martial arts star is someone who knows less about acting than s/he does about fighting. On the other hand, it reflects a dominant idea about film performance, by privileging facial Sabrina Yu: Can a Wuxia Star Act? 134 EnterText 6.1 expression/psychology over body movement/physicality. Can’t a martial arts star act? Are fighting and acting always two split, conflicting elements within a Chinese wuxia star’s performance? In this paper, I would like to re-examine this stereotypical western critical consensus in the light of the contrasting Hong Kong critical response to Jet Li’s Chinese work Once Upon A Time In China (Tsui Hark, Hong Kong, 1991) (OUATIC hereinafter).

BC Film Stunt Performers and Stunt Related Injuries: A Survey and Review September 2012 Prepared For: Actsafe Suite 215, 750 Hamilton Street Vancouver, BC V6B 2R5 Prepared By: Billy Quirke M.Sc., Occupational Health and Safety Consultant Actsafe Suite 215, 750 Hamilton Street Vancouver, BC V6B 2R5 1.0 Executive Summary Background The purpose of this research was to a) explore the predominant health and safety issues facing stunt performers in British Columbia (BC) and b) identify areas or projects where Actsafe can help the stunt performance community to do their jobs safely. Initial Review • WorkSafeBC Stunt Related Injury Statistics - Falls from elevation accounted for over half of the accepted claims by stunt performers in the past 10 years. • Academic Sources – One study highlights the prevalence of concussions/head injuries sustained during stunt performance. Stunt coordinators and physicians were found to be the individuals most influential in communicating health and safety oriented information to respondents. Online Survey • Wire work & ratchets, martial arts and high falls resulted in the greatest number of reported injuries respectively. • A large percentage of respondents suffering head injuries did not report the filing of accident reports or receive compensation after injury. • The primary rationale from respondents for not reporting an injury was a lack of recognition of the severity of injuries. Other reported factors included feelings that injury was part of the job, the belief reporting would decrease the likelihood of ascertaining future work and perceived difficulties in dealing with the regulatory agency. • 35% of respondents felt the cumulative abuse they have sustained as a stunt performer has negatively affected their overall health and/or affected their quality of life.

  • How to Get Into Stunts
1 The professional stunt industry is a highly competitive field in the film world. It is a tightly knit community of professional race car drivers, world-class martial artists, gymnasts, dancers, circus performers, motocross racers, professional skateboarders and the list goes on. Needless to say, it is also extremely difficult to break into. As a potential stunt performer, you should have something extraordinary to offer the industry. Unfortunately, frequent gym visits, yoga, running, weightlifting and the like simply aren’t enough. There is the occasional “natural athlete” who succeeds but, for the most part, stunt performers come to the job with something major under their belts. In terms of training, there are tons of courses or sports you can sign up for that will help you along your path to becoming a stunt performer — take stunt driving courses, get your motorcycle license, and SCUBA ticket. Train at rock climbing, gymnastics, dirt biking, martial arts, trampoline, circus school, inline skating, diving, cliff jumping, etc. Take courses in acting, rigging, firearms handling and work with all kinds of weapons — there are literally unlimited things you can do to develop your career. The more specific skills you have to offer, the better. A good question to ask someone who wants to get into stunts is, “What is the skill set that you are offering to the industry?” All too often the answer is “I don’t really do anything specific but I’m crazy! I’ll do anything!” Translation: I’m unqualified, irrational and willing to take risks. Great. Except that a stunt performer’s job is to maximize the safety and minimize the risk in an action performance through knowledge, training and experience.
