  • Models of Time Travel
MODELS OF TIME TRAVEL A COMPARATIVE STUDY USING FILMS Guy Roland Micklethwait A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of The Australian National University July 2012 National Centre for the Public Awareness of Science ANU College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences APPENDIX I: FILMS REVIEWED Each of the following film reviews has been reduced to two pages. The first page of each of each review is objective; it includes factual information about the film and a synopsis not of the plot, but of how temporal phenomena were treated in the plot. The second page of the review is subjective; it includes the genre where I placed the film, my general comments and then a brief discussion about which model of time I felt was being used and why. It finishes with a diagrammatic representation of the timeline used in the film. Note that if a film has only one diagram, it is because the different journeys are using the same model of time in the same way. Sometimes several journeys are made. The present moment on any timeline is always taken at the start point of the first time travel journey, which is placed at the origin of the graph. The blue lines with arrows show where the time traveller’s trip began and ended. They can also be used to show how information is transmitted from one point on the timeline to another. When choosing a model of time for a particular film, I am not looking at what happened in the plot, but rather the type of timeline used in the film to describe the possible outcomes, as opposed to what happened.

DOI link: 10.1386/jicms.5.2.229_1 Title: ‘The Cultural Capital of the Gothic Horror Adaptation: The Case of Dario Argento’s The Phantom of the Opera and Dracula 3D’ Author: Xavier Aldana Reyes Affiliation: Manchester Metropolitan University Abstract: Dario Argento is the best-known living Italian horror director, but despite this his career is perceived to be at an all-time low. I propose that the nadir of Argento’s filmography coincides, in part, with his embrace of the gothic adaptation and that at least two of his late films, The Phantom of the Opera (1998) and Dracula 3D (2012), are born out of the tensions between his desire to achieve auteur status by choosing respectable and literary sources as his primary material and the bloody and excessive nature of the product that he has come to be known for. My contention is that to understand the role that these films play within the director’s oeuvre, as well as their negative reception among critics, it is crucial to consider how they negotiate the dichotomy between the positive critical discourse currently surrounding gothic cinema and the negative one applied to visceral horror. Keywords: Dario Argento, Gothic, adaptation, horror, cultural capital, auteurism, Dracula, Phantom of the Opera Dario Argento is, arguably, the best-known living Italian horror director.

IN THE UNITED STATES DISTRICT COURT FOR THE NORTHERN DISTRICT OF GEORGIA ATLANTA DIVISION Cross Creek Pictures, LLC, et al., Case No. 1:17-cv-3440 Plaintiffs, Michael L. Brown v. United States District Judge S & S Aviation, Inc., Defendant. ________________________________/ OPINION AND ORDER For the reasons below, the Court grants the Motion to Dismiss filed by S&S Aviation. (Dkt. 5). I. Background This is an indemnity and contribution case arising out of a plane crash in the Republic of Colombia. The accident occurred after filming of “American Made,” a movie starring Tom Cruise about a drug smuggler recruited by the C.I.A. to capture Pablo Escobar. Dkt. 8 at ¶ 8. Two of the three people on the plane died in the crash. Id. at ¶ 9. The third occupant was seriously injured. Id. Plaintiffs Cross Creek Pictures, LLC; Imagine Entertainment, LLC; Quadrant Pictures, LLC; and Vendian Entertainment, LLC were production companies involved in making the movie. Id. at ¶¶ 1-4. The family of a man killed in the crash filed a wrongful-death suit in California state court against several individuals and companies, including Plaintiffs. Id. at ¶ 9. The decedent’s estate alleges that Plaintiffs arranged and managed the plane used in the film and were responsible for ensuring that only skilled pilots flew it. Dkt. 5-2 at ¶¶ 10- 11. The decedent’s estate also alleges that Plaintiffs negligently allowed an unqualified pilot to fly the plane, causing the accident and the decedent’s death. Id. at ¶¶ 18-20. In the California action, Plaintiffs in this case deny any responsibility for the crash and argue (among other things) that another company, Mena Productions, was responsible for controlling the use of the aircraft.

He began producing records professionally in the s and has gone on to become a successful singer in Hong Kong and Asia. Awards won. Both Jackie and Alan go out into the hall and bump into May, and Jackie has to cover his tracks by pretending that Alan knows that Lorelei is in Jackie's bedroom. MEDIA CONTACT Teni Melidonian [email protected] Toni Thompson [email protected] January 24, 2012 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 84th ACADEMY AWARDS® NOMINATIONS ANNOUNCED BEVERLY HILLS, CA — Nominations for the 84th Academy Awards were announced today (Tuesday, January 24) by Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences President Tom Sherak and 2010 Oscar® nominee Jennifer Lawrence. Sherak and Lawrence, who was nominated for an Academy Award® for her lead performance in “Winter’s Bone,” announced the nominees in 10 of the 24 Award categories at a 5:38 a.m. PT live news conference attended by more than 400 international media representatives. Lists of nominations in all categories were then distributed to the media in attendance and online via the official Academy Awards website, www.oscar.com. Academy members from each of the branches vote to determine the nominees in their respective categories – actors nominate actors, film editors nominate film editors, etc. In the Animated Feature Film and Foreign Language Film categories, nominations are selected by vote of multi-branch screening committees. All voting members are eligible to select the Best Picture nominees. Nominations ballots were mailed to the 5,783 voting members in late December and were returned directly to PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), the international accounting firm, for tabulation. Official screenings of all motion pictures with one or more nominations will begin for members this weekend at the Academy's Samuel Goldwyn Theater. Screenings also will be held at the Academy's Linwood Dunn Theater in Hollywood and in London, New York and the San Francisco Bay Area. All active and life members of the Academy are eligible to select the winners in all categories, although in five of them – Animated Short Film, Live Action Short Film, Documentary Feature, Documentary Short Subject and Foreign Language Film – members can vote only if they have seen all of the nominated films in those categories.

  • Martial Arts, Acting and Kung Fu Hero in Change
EnterText 6.1 SABRINA YU Can a Wuxia Star Act? Martial Arts, Acting, and Critical Responses to Jet Li’s Once Upon A Time In China Introduction It has been commonplace in western critical discourse to state that action stars can’t act. This seems particularly true when it comes to trans-bordering Chinese action stars like Jet Li. Criticism of his acting skills in his English-language films can be easily picked up from the press: Without the fight scenes, though, this film (Romeo Must Die) would be a bust… ‘Jet is our special effect,’ says Silver, summing up his star’s appeal neatly.1 Li’s martial arts skills are as brilliant as his acting skills aren’t.2 The action is fun and ultra-violent, the story is satisfactorily ridiculous and the acting is non-existent.3 “Good martial artist with limited acting ability” seems to represent a popular view of Chinese martial arts stars and indeed this is how they are often used in Hollywood films. Nevertheless, such a view also reveals a deep-rooted bias, i.e. the martial arts star is someone who knows less about acting than s/he does about fighting. On the other hand, it reflects a dominant idea about film performance, by privileging facial Sabrina Yu: Can a Wuxia Star Act? 134 EnterText 6.1 expression/psychology over body movement/physicality. Can’t a martial arts star act? Are fighting and acting always two split, conflicting elements within a Chinese wuxia star’s performance? In this paper, I would like to re-examine this stereotypical western critical consensus in the light of the contrasting Hong Kong critical response to Jet Li’s Chinese work Once Upon A Time In China (Tsui Hark, Hong Kong, 1991) (OUATIC hereinafter).
