Minutes of the Annual General Meeting held on Thursday 12 th May 2011 had been circulated and were signed by the Chairman as a correct record. Co-option of Parish Councillor Only six nominations were received at the recent Parish Council Elections for the seven seats on Ravenstonedale Parish Council. The vacancy may now be filled without the need for further election. At the AGM held on 12 th May it had been resolved that the vacancy be advertised in order to ensure equal opportunity for all. There was one applicant, Mr Alex Watts- Tobin from Newbiggin-on-Lune. Mr Watts-Tobin is known to all councillors.

Giants Grave, Penrith In the graveyard of St Andrews Church in Penrith is the 'Giants Grave', where it is believed that Owen Cæsarius - king of Cumbria between 900 and 937 AD - is buried. The 'Giants Grave' is a collection of ancient grave stones comprising two 11' high stone crosses and four hog-back stones. An excavation of the 'Giants Grave' showed a skeleton underneath with a sword. The four hog-back stones surrounding the grave are said to represent the four wild boars he killed in Inglewood Forest. Directions: From the Musgrave Monument (clock tower) in the centre of Penrith, follow the street between the two banks where you will find St Andrew’s Church and the Giant’s Grave. 2. Emma and Sir Eglamore of Aira Force - In medieval times a girl called Emma lived near Aira Force. She was betrothed to a renowned knight called Sir Eglamore. He had to leave her to follow the Crusades and Emma became so disturbed that she started sleep walking to Aira Force. Sir Eglamore returned unexpectedly from his travels, and found Emma at the top of the force where she tumbled into the depths.

    Contaminated Land Inspection Strategy May 2001 1st Review - Summer 2007 The original report was prepared by Casella Science and Environment Ltd in association with Eden District Council. This review was undertaken by Eden District Council Executive Summary This is the first review of the Contaminated Land Inspection Strategy (referred to as ‘the strategy’) since its initial publication in 2001. The rationale behind the strategy remains constant, however it has been updated to include: • Amendments in legislation and guidance • Updated datasets • Revised assessment process used for sites prioritisation • Progress to date • Timetable of work for 2007-2008 Under new regulations that came into force on 1 April 2000 (Part IIA of Environmental Protection Act 1990) Eden District Council (EDC) was required to inspect land in its district for the purpose of identifying contaminated land. A strategy was submitted to the Department of the Environment Transport and Regions by July 2001. This strategy details how, in light of the characteristics of the area, the authority will take a rational, ordered and efficient approach to this inspection. It should be noted when considering whether land is contaminated or not, the fact that a harmful substance is (in terms of ‘harm’ to human health, to eco-systems or to property or pollution of controlled waters) in, on, or under a piece of land does not itself mean that land is ‘contaminated land’. The source of harm may be present, but unless a possible route (‘plausible pollutant linkage’) exists through which it is likely to cause harm to health, eco-systems, property or cause pollution of controlled waters, the land is not contaminated within the meaning of the Act.

Older forms of the place-names were retrieved, and these old forms were analysed in order to understand the modern versions of the place-names. Place-name elements were grouped and their frequencies calculated in an attempt to understand the distribution of elements in each area. 1300 place-names were categorised based on their presumed origin, though some lacked the necessary information. Several place-names were given new possible derivations based on their categorisation and the elements they contained. Modern place-name elements/features hinting at a possibly Scandinavian place- name in the past were identified and described.
