It also includes elements from Athey’s archive relating to Joyce—including two costumes from the live performance—and his life within and beyond his fundamentalist origin family (such as unpublished writings from his period of recovery in the 1980s, and the numerous flyers advertising fundamentalist revivals he attended). The section is organized around materials that evoke the mix of religiosity and dysfunctional (sexualized and incestuous) family dynamics Athey experienced as a child and wrote about in some of his autobiographical writings that are included in the catalogue, including Mary Magdalene Footwashing Set (1996), which was included in a group show at Western Project in Los Angeles in 2006 and in the Invisible Exports Gallery “Displaced Person” show in 2012, a former gallery just around the corner from Participant Inc.’s location.

MUSIC FOR THE INTERNATIONAL MASSES: AMERICAN FOREIGN POLICY, THE RECORDING INDUSTRY, AND PUNK ROCK IN THE COLD WAR by MINDY CLEGG Under the Direction of ALEX SAYF CUMMINGS, PhD ABSTRACT This dissertation explores the connections between US foreign policy initiatives, the global expansion of the American recording industry, and the rise of punk in the 1970s and 1980s. The material support of the US government contributed to the globalization of the recording industry and functioned as a facet American-style consumerism. As American culture spread, so did questions about the Cold War and consumerism. As young people began to question the Cold War order they still consumed American mass culture as a way of rebelling against the establishment. But corporations complicit in the Cold War produced this mass culture. Punks embraced cultural rebellion like hippies.

  • From Crass to Thrash, to Squeakers: the Suspicious Turn to Metal in UK Punk and Hardcore Post ‘85
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by De Montfort University Open Research Archive From Crass to Thrash, to Squeakers: The Suspicious Turn to Metal in UK Punk and Hardcore Post ‘85. Otto Sompank I always loved the simplicity and visceral feel of all forms of punk. From the Pistols take on the New York Dolls rock, or the UK Subs aggressive punk take on rhythm and blues. The stark reality Crass and the anarchist-punk scene was informed with aspects of obscure seventies rock too, for example Pete Wright’s prog bass lines in places. Granted. Perhaps the most famous and intense link to rock and punk was Motorhead. While their early output and LP’s definitely had a clear nod to punk (Lemmy playing for the Damned), they appealed to most punks back then with their sheer aggression and intensity. It’s clear Motorhead and Black Sabbath influenced a lot of street-punk and the ferocious tones of Discharge and their Scandinavian counterparts such as Riistetyt, Kaaos and Anti Cimex. The early links were there but the influence of late 1970s early 80s NWOBM (New Wave of British Heavy Metal) and street punk, Discharge etc. in turn influenced Metallica, Anthrax and Exodus in the early eighties. Most of them can occasionally be seen sporting Discharge, Broken Bones and GBH shirts on their early record-sleeve pictures. Not only that, Newcastle band Venom were equally influential in the mix of new genre forms germinating in the early 1980s. One of the early examples of the incorporation of rock and metal into the UK punk scene came from Discharge.

  • The Long History of Indigenous Rock, Metal, and Punk
UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Not All Killed by John Wayne: The Long History of Indigenous Rock, Metal, and Punk 1940s to the Present A thesis submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Master of Arts in American Indian Studies by Kristen Le Amber Martinez 2019 © Copyright by Kristen Le Amber Martinez 2019 ABSTRACT OF THESIS Not All Killed by John Wayne: Indigenous Rock ‘n’ Roll, Metal, and Punk History 1940s to the Present by Kristen Le Amber Martinez Master of Arts in American Indian Studies University of California Los Angeles, 2019 Professor Maylei Blackwell, Chair In looking at the contribution of Indigenous punk and hard rock bands, there has been a long history of punk that started in Northern Arizona, as well as a current diverse scene in the Southwest ranging from punk, ska, metal, doom, sludge, blues, and black metal. Diné, Apache, Hopi, Pueblo, Gila, Yaqui, and O’odham bands are currently creating vast punk and metal music scenes. In this thesis, I argue that Native punk is not just a cultural movement, but a form of survivance. Bands utilize punk and their stories as a conduit to counteract issues of victimhood as well as challenge imposed mechanisms of settler colonialism, racism, misogyny, homophobia, notions of being fixed in the past, as well as bringing awareness to genocide and missing and murdered Indigenous women. Through D.I.Y. and space making, bands are writing music which ii resonates with them, and are utilizing their own venues, promotions, zines, unique fashion, and lyrics to tell their stories.

  • Capítulo 2. Marco Teórico

In the beginning there were the parties, then the fanzine/magazine called Stigma, radio show in the local radio station, concerts and so on. It’s a long time and a lot of work was done inbetween. However, we’re working on new visual of the webzine at the moment. Well, it’s always a question of time to work on the projects like tis. Especially when one has a family and regular job. Then the priorities change a bit… 3 Nattsol: The next question is just to Mary0.
