But we still believe, as has been indicated by all the feasibility studies that have been done, that a cooperative effort will drive more bodies to the Tama area and will be a win for everyone,” Pavone said. Tama Mayor Chris Bearden said he doesn’t believe opposition to the private casino is unanimous within the Meskwaki tribe. He said some tribal members have told him they are looking forward to the establishment of the Prairie Hills casino. Tribal of- fi cials weren’t available for comment Tuesday. The Meskwaki casino complex, which includes a 404-room hotel and one of Iowa’s largest gambling opera- tions, employs 984 people, of which 85 percent are not tribal members, the tribal council’s letter said. The tribe is the largest employer in Tama County. Jack Ketterer, administrator of the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission, declined Tuesday to speculate what impact the tribe’s stance could have on Signature Management’s efforts to obtain a casino license. The commis- sion is scheduled to make decisions on awarding casino licenses May 13 in Johnston. Also seeking state casino licenses are groups from Ottumwa, Fort Dodge and Lyon County. The Meskwaki casino is operated under a compact with state offi cials, but it is not regulated by the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission and it doesn’t pay state casino taxes. State Rep. Lance Horbach, R-Tama, said Tuesday that some area residents have told him they were surprised state offi cials hadn’t previously considered the proposed Tama casino’s impact on the Meskwaki casino. Ketterer said state-hired consultants hadn’t included the Meskwaki casino in stud- ies of Iowa’s gambling market because the tribe is sovereign.

EDITORS NOTE: In 1993 the Win- nebago requested support from the Meskwaki to oppose the proposed Casinos in Council Bluffs, Iowa. They declined, costing the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska 80 percent of our WinnaVegas Casino revenues. Let’s hope the Winnebago Tribal Council doesn’t return the favor, and supports the Meskwaki opposition to the ad- ditional Tama County Casino. Jerome LaPointe, Sr.
