Glenn, Jr. throughout his varied careers. Dating from 1917 to 2016, the wide assortment of artifacts in the collection help document and illuminate all aspects of Senator Glenn’s life from his childhood in the small Ohio town of New Concord to his position as chairman of the Board of Advisors for the John Glenn College of Public Affairs at The Ohio State University. Also included in the collection are materials pertaining to the life and accomplishments of Senator Glenn’s wife, Anna “Annie” Castor Glenn. Arrangement: The arrangement of the materials within the Artifacts Collection Sub-Group consists of seventeen categories: Art Works Family Items Mementos Awards Foreign Gifts Models Buttons Jewelry Plaques Caps and Hats Keys Plates and Mugs Clothing Lapel Pins Shoulder Patches Desktop Items Medals and Medallions Artifacts within each category may be arranged further into seven possible sub-categories: Annie Glenn; Corporate; Family; Military; NASA; Post-Senate; and Senate. Access: The Artifacts Collection Sub-Group is open to public research under the rules and regulations of The Ohio State University. Researchers should note that many of the artifacts in the collection are on exhibit at the John Glenn College of Public Affairs or at various museums, including the U.S. Astronauts Hall of Fame in Titusville, Florida; the John and Annie Glenn Historic Site in New Concord, Ohio; and the Center of Science and Industry (COSI) in Columbus, Ohio. Copyrights: John and Anna Glenn have dedicated such copyrights as they possess in the Artifacts Collection Sub-Group to the public. Consideration of all other copyrights is the responsibility of the author and the publisher. Processing Note: Jeffrey W. Thomas and Michelle Drobik processed and arranged the Artifacts Collection Sub-Group from 2001 to 2010. Subsequent acquisitions added materials to the collection from 2013 to 2018. 3 Scope and Content Note Category 1: Art Works The Art Works Category consists of thirty-one items arranged into the sub-categories of Annie Glenn, NASA, Post-Senate, and Senate. The bulk of the artifacts in the category consist of hand- crafted items sent to John and Annie Glenn by friends and admirers from 1962 through 2016. These items include quilts and other types of needlework, paintings on wood and other media, sculptures, and various items fashioned from wood. Of particular note in this category is the artist’s plaster model of the U.S. Marine Corps Memorial Statue (Artifact 52). Done in the early 1950s, the model was used by sculptor Felix de Weldon during the building of his monumental bronze sculpture located in Arlington National Cemetery. Felix de Weldon presented the model to John Glenn when Glenn visited the artist’s Washington, DC studio in the early 1960s. Note to Researchers: Paintings on canvas, drawings on paper, original cartoons, and limited edition prints are located within the Audiovisual Sub-Group. Category 2: Awards The Awards Category contains 199 items arranged into the sub-categories of Annie Glenn, Corporate, NASA, Post-Senate, and Senate. Dating from 1962 to 2016, the collection consists of an extensive assortment of plaques, sculptures, and trophies, along with various objects made from silver, porcelain, or cut glass. Many of the awards presented to John Glenn honor a particular achievement or recognize his efforts on a specific legislative issue. Other awards pay tribute to Glenn’s contributions over time to public service. Notable examples of such tributes acknowledging Glenn’s lifetime public policy accomplishments include the following. • Harry S. Truman Public Service Award for 1987 from the Harry S. Truman Foundation • Public Service Award for 1999 from the School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University • Public Service Award for 2004 from the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars • Statesmanship Award for 2004 from the U.S. Association of Former Members of Congress Other awards in the collection commemorate John Glenn’s achievements in the fields of aeronautics and astronautics. Contained within the collection are some of the most distinguished American aviation honors awarded to an individual including the following. • Alfred A. Cunningham Aviation Award for 1962 from the U.S. Marine Corps • Robert J. Collier Trophy for 1962 from the National Aeronautics Association • Robert H. Goddard Memorial Trophy from the National Rocket Club for 1963 and 1999 • Centennial Award for 1988 from the National Geographic Society • Wernher Von Braun Award for 1997 from the National Space Club 4 • National Air and Space Museum Trophy for 2001 from the Smithsonian Institution • Lindbergh Foundation Spirit Award for 2002 • Wright Brothers Memorial Trophy for 2003 from the National Aeronautics Association The collection also includes a number of awards presented to Annie Glenn for her leadership in the in the field of speech and language. Both the Ohio Women’s Hall of Fame and the Hall of Excellence of the Ohio Foundation of Independent Colleges inducted Mrs. Glenn in 1999. Also in 1999, the United Way honored John and Annie Glenn together with the Alexis de Tocqueville Society Award. Note to Researchers: Additional awards presented to John and Annie Glenn are located in the Certificates Series of the Audiovisual Collection Sub-Group. Category 3: Buttons The Buttons Category consists of 258 artifacts arranged into the sub-categories of Family, NASA, and Senate. The Family sub-category contains buttons from various presidential campaigns dating from the 1930s to the 1960 campaign of John F. Kennedy. The bulk of these buttons pertain to the 1940 campaign between Franklin Roosevelt and Wendell Willkie. The collection also contains sixteen buttons from John Glenn’s career as a NASA astronaut. Six of these buttons date from Glenn’s Friendship 7 space flight, while five other buttons pertain to his return to space in 1998 as a crewmember on the Space Shuttle Discovery mission STS-95. The collection also contains two souvenir buttons commemorating the tragic launch of the Space Shuttle Challenger in 1986. The majority of the items in the collection are political buttons from election campaigns or buttons supporting a particular public policy issue. The issue buttons advocate a variety of topics of importance to Senator John Glenn, such as veterans’ affairs, children, energy, education, women’s rights, and the economy. The campaign buttons consist of numerous items from Glenn’s various senatorial elections and from his 1984 presidential campaign. Also dating from the 1984 presidential campaign are an assortment of buttons opposing the administration and policies of President Ronald Reagan. Other campaign buttons pertain to presidential elections dating from 1972 to 2004 and to campaigns of state and national Democratic candidates endorsed by Senator Glenn. The collection also contains John Glenn’s delegate badges from the Democratic National Conventions of 1972, 1980, and 1988. Category 4: Caps and Hats The Caps and Hats Category consists of thirty-two artifacts arranged into the sub-categories of Corporate, Military, NASA, Post-Senate, and Senate. The lone item in the Corporate sub- category is a crash helmet John Glenn wore in 1970 while test driving automobiles during a visit to the General Motors Proving Grounds in Warren, Michigan. The three military related items are baseball type caps pertaining to the U.S. Marine Corps Aviation Association or to reunions of the Marine Corps squadron Glenn flew in during World War II. 5 The collection includes a variety of baseball type caps commemorating Glenn’s NASA space flights in 1962 and in 1998. Other caps pertain to NASA anniversaries, events, or research centers. Of particular significance is the Stetson hat presented to John Glenn by Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson in July 1962 during ceremonies opening NASA’s Houston Space Center. The two Post-Senate items consist of the hardhat worn by the ship’s sponsor, Lyn Glenn, during the christening ceremony for the USNS John Glenn on February 1, 2014, and a baseball cap with the ship’s logo from the ceremony. Many of the caps in the Senate sub-category date from John Glenn’s presidential campaign in 1984. Other caps commemorate specific events Glenn participated in while a U.S. Senator, such as being the Grand Marshal of the Tournament of Roses Parade in 1990. The collection also

President Trump subsequently directed the Department of Defense (DoD) to develop a legislative proposal to establish a United States Space Force (USSF) as a sixth branch of the United States Armed Forces within the Department of the Air Force. On March 1, 2019, the DoD submitted its proposal to Congress to establish the USSF and outlined a five-year phase-in plan beginning October 1, 2020, to allow USSF leaders to prepare for mission transfer beginning in fiscal year 2021. Under the proposal, the USSF would be authorized to organize, train and equip space forces to provide for freedom of operation in, from and to the space domain; to provide independent military options for joint and national leadership; and to enable the lethality and effectiveness of the joint force. Florida is home to several strategic Air Force bases. Both Patrick Air Force Base and Cape Canaveral Air Force Station provide space launch operations support through the 45th Space Wing.

KEY WEST IS TRULY A 'PRESIDENTIAL CITY' By HAMPTON DUNN KEY WEST --- The first President to discover the delights of this Southernmost City in the U.S. was president Jefferson Davis of the Confederate States of America. He came here in 1867, shortly after his release from prison following the South's defeat. The first U.S. President to visit here was Ulysses S. Grant, the famed Civil War General, who touched down here on a world tour in 1880. President William Howard Taft came down on Henry Flagler's Overseas Railroad in 1912, with Flagler proudly showing him the sights. Grover Cleveland was one of the early Presidents who liked Key West. President Hervert Hoover, a real Isaac Walton, loved the Keys and stayed here aboard his yacht often during his Presidency.
