Greek Gods Zeus Zeus was the most powerful of all the gods. He was god of the sky and the king of Olympus. His temper affected the weather, Greek Gods and he threw thunderbolts when he was unhappy. He was married to Hera. Zeus had the power to transform his shape. He was ruler of all other gods and was seen as powerful, strong and unpredictable. Did You Know? chapter 4 The Shield of Heracles (Hes. Sc. 139–320) 4.1 Introduction The next extant ekphrasis in ancient Greek Literature is found in the pseudo- Hesiodic Shield. The Shield is a small-scale epic poem of 480 hexameters, named after its central section which deals with Heracles’ shield. The poem is usually dated to the first third of the sixth century BC. It narrates an episode from the life of Heracles: the killing of Cycnus, a son of Ares. Heracles is por- trayed throughout the poem in a positive light: Zeus has fathered Heracles as a protector against ruin for gods and for men (ὥς ῥα θεοῖσιν / ἀνδράσι τ’ ἀλφηστῇσιν ἀρῆς ἀλκτῆρα φυτεύσαι, 28–29).1 By killing Cycnus, who robs travellers on their way to Delphi, Heracles lives up to this purpose. The poem is generally regarded as a product of an oral tradition.2 The fact that the Shield is oral poetry has consequences for its understanding. Thus, the idea that the Shield is a mere imitation of Achilles’ shield in Il. 18.478–608— a verdict that goes back to Aristophanes of Byzantium—must be rejected.3 It is doubtful whether in the sixth century BC fixed texts of the Iliad existed, to which another text, that of the Shield, could refer.4 This is very much a Hellenis- tic point of view. Rather, it is more plausible that both texts came into being in a still-fluid oral tradition, which contained certain stock formulae and themes.5 One common element in the tradition might well have been a shield ekphrasis, which could serve as a showpiece of the poet.6 The poet of the Shield has indeed composed his shield ekphrasis as a show- piece: Heracles’ shield is noisier, more sensational, more gruesome, but above all bigger than Achilles’ shield.

A key objective of the program is to investigate water ice within regolith in the lunar south pole, which could provide fuel and life support. The origin and concentration of water ice in lunar regolith is not well understood. Determining the concentration of water ice at the surface and whether it persists with depth could help determine if the ice was delivered by comets or is endogenic [1]. The name of this powerful group of gods comes from Mount Olympus, where the council of 12 met to discuss matters. All 12 Olympians had a home on Mount Olympus and that was where they were most commonly found. HADES, the god of the Underworld, preferred to live there, and POSEIDON often chose to stay in his palace under the sea. Most of the other Olympians would be on Mount Olympus year round unless they were travelling. HESTIA used to be one of the Olympians, but the constant fighting and bickering between the gods annoyed her and she eventually gave up her seat to the god of wine, DIONYSUS. Even though she left the council, Hestia still kept a home on Mount Olympus. APHRODITE was on the council but, in most Greek mythological stories, her husband HEPHAESTUS was not. At the famous Parthenon temple in Greece, there is a statue of each of the 12 Olympian gods. Hades does not have a statue, but Hephaestus does. The question of who the 12 Olympians are really depends on who is telling the story. Nobody is truly sure if Hades of Hephaestus can be classed as the Twelfth Olympian. So, because of the way Greek myths were told and retold in different ways, there are actually 14 gods and goddesses who can be considered as an Olympian god.

Eris Goddess of Discord © Emmanuella Kozas Image used with permission from the artist Eris is the Greek Goddess of Chaos and Discord, and, in the confusion that surrounds Her origins, She certainly live up to the name. She is referred to either a minor spirit, or eldest daughter of Nyx (Night) and Zeus, or daughter of Zeus and Hera and twin to Ares. She is depicted as a beautiful young woman, a skeletal crone or winged daemon. Hesiod describes two Goddesses who go by the name Eris, the Erites. The first is a benign Goddess who promotes healthy competition, and can be a catalyst for bettering oneself. This "Good Eris" provides the incentive for individuals to create the change they want to see in themselves. It is Eris who gives us the proverbial "kick in the butt" we all require, at times, when we become lethargic, complacent or prone to procrastination. The second Eris is the one we are most familiar with. As the daughter of Hera and Zeus, and companion to Ares, She fosters evil, war and cruelty. Her epithets include Infernal Monster, Lady of Sorrows and Nurse of War. The poet Virgil writes that Eris lives in a cavern, surrounded by mountains, at the entrance to Hades. Eris begins as a small and insignificant Spirit who thrives on Chaos, striding through battlefields growing stronger and larger as She feeds on the slaughter.

Greek Gods/Mythology Notes - Information on the Greek belief system comes from many sources. Unlike followers of religions such as Christianity, Judaism, & Islam, the Greeks did not have a single sacred text, such as the Bible or Koran from which their beliefs and religious practices derived. Instead, they generally used oral traditions, passed on by word of mouth, to relate sacred stories. Priest and priestesses to various gods would also guide people in worship in various temples across Greece. We know something about these beliefs because Greek poets such as Homer, Hesiod and Pindar, and Greek dramatists such as Euripides, Aristophanes & Sophocles mention the myths in their various works. Greek mythology, however, was not static- it was constantly changing and evolving. Thus, there are often many different versions (and some that are contradictory toward one another) of the various Greek myths. Thus, some of the example myths you read in here may differ from ones you have previously heard. It does not necessarily make either version “wrong”- simply different. - The Greeks had many Gods & Goddesses- over three thousand if one were to count the many minor gods and goddesses. These deities made up the Greek pantheon, a word used to mean all the gods and goddesses (from the Greek word “pan” meaning all, and “theos” meaning gods). Athena and Poseidon compete for a coastal town Athena was the goddess of wisdom. She could get angry, but more typically, she was wise, and kind, and understanding. Athena was born very oddly. Her father was the mighty Zeus. But she did not have a mother. Instead, as the myth goes, she was born directly out of Zeus' brain. Zeus loved all his children. But one of his favorites was Athena. Athena held a powerful position in the ancient Greek god world. She was an Olympian, one of the council of 12, who held a seat on Mount Olympus. She also had a home there. Here is a myth about Athena that shows how clever and practical she was. Nearly every town in ancient Greece had a god that looked after the townspeople. Towns rarely had more than one god to keep an eye on their best interests. Most gods did not share well. So usually, it was one town and if the town was lucky, one god to watch over it. Poseidon loved watching over towns. He usually picked coastal towns since he was the Lord of the Sea. Poseidon was a very powerful god. His brothers were Zeus and Hades. Poseidon was a moody fellow, but he loved his wife and children and he loved attention. He liked having people build temples in his honor and bring him gifts. They were not very useful gifts for a god, but he enjoyed getting them anyway. As Greece grew and developed, new towns sprang up all the time. Poseidon was always on the lookout for new coastal towns.
