  • The Izala Movement in Nigeria Genesis, Fragmentation and Revival
    n the basis on solid fieldwork in northern Nigeria including participant observation, 18 Göttingen Series in Ointerviews with Izala, Sufis, and religion experts, and collection of unpublished Social and Cultural Anthropology material related to Izala, three aspects of the development of Izala past and present are analysed: its split, its relationship to Sufis, and its perception of sharīʿa re-implementation. “Field Theory” of Pierre Bourdieu, “Religious Market Theory” of Rodney Start, and “Modes Ramzi Ben Amara of Religiosity Theory” of Harvey Whitehouse are theoretical tools of understanding the religious landscape of northern Nigeria and the dynamics of Islamic movements and groups. The Izala Movement in Nigeria Genesis, Fragmentation and Revival Since October 2015 Ramzi Ben Amara is assistant professor (maître-assistant) at the Faculté des Lettres et des Sciences Humaines, Sousse, Tunisia. The objectives of the study include: to determinethe temporal trend and spatial pattern of maternal death and maternal mortality ratio and to identify the common cases of maternal deaths. Hospital based data for the period of five years, from 2010 to 2014 were obtained from General Hospitals, Federal Medical Centre Birnin Kudu and Rasheed Shekoni Specialist Hospital Dutse. Descriptive and inferential statistics(X2 and two way Anova) as well as geographical information system were used for the data analysis. The finding shows that the maternal deaths keep on increasing until in 2014 the figure decline. The 861/100,000 was estimated for the whole five periods, 2014 with the 3,654 per 100,000. The MMR computed for the seven LGA in the study area shows that Birnin Kudu has 1,624 deaths per 100,000, Buji LGA with the 213 death per 100,000 and Miga has 94 deaths per 10,000 which is the lowest. The major obstetric causes of maternal deaths are identified to be anaemia, eclampsia, malaria in pregnancy, PPH and retained placenta. Anaemia is the most important common cause of maternal death in the Jigawa central senatorial district. The finding further gives the recommendation: special attention should be given to the leading causes of maternal deaths.

By and large, population is an important factor in the global as well as local politics, economy and ecology. Indeed, population related issues are nowadays in the forefront of development activities/issues. The principal objectives of this paper is to reveal the following: • The nature and origin of population development in Kano State • The socio- cultural impulses for the maintained high population concentration in Kano State • The prospects for the sustained population growth in Kano state and • To objectively inform compatriots, expatriates and professionals about the peculiar nature of the population of Kano state. • To highlight some of the ecological risks associated with the population pressure stress in the state To achieve these objectives, relevant literature were reviewed and some observations and surveys were made in an attempt to drive home some facts and figures on the character and trends of the population of Kano state. 2 Population Development Theories Myriad demographic theories were developed overtime and over places to explain the arguments for or against population expansion. Prominent amongst such include those theories of Adam Smith who was vehemently optimistic of the need for population growth to sustain the emerging industrial muscle of Europe in the 19th century. Thomas Robert Malthus (in the 19th century too) was pessimistic of exploding population when the commensurate food supply was not in sight.
