Collins !1 Joey Collins Honors Senior Seminar Dr. Blais & Dr. LeBlanc 9 December 2018 The Lightning in Us: What Was Sparked by Walt Whitman’s “I Sing The Body Electric” Poets and historians of American literature have closely analyzed the contents of the great American poem “I Sing The Body Electric” by Walt Whitman. To comprehend the underlying messages conveyed in this work, one must understand how Whitman’s musings relate to the his- tory of, as well as the present incarnation of American culture. Whitman himself was a man of his own, defying the cultural norms of his time and expressing through his poetry a unique view of our nation. His expression in “Body Electric” is telling of his individuality as a poet and a nineteenth century American man, and this expression has proven itself to be timeless as it is revered in today’s America. The America of now is a vastly diverse melting pot of political views, personal back- grounds, and cultural fusions. “Body Electric” is an all-encompassing poem, written from the perspective of Whitman the careful observer, who is able to see the inherent beauty in the many interweaving constituents of our country. As the poem unfolds, there is a decidedly political stance taken by Whitman, a stance which, one hundred and sixty three years after the poem’s publishing, still reads as contentious in our modern social climate. It is this contentiousness com- bined with a freshly delivered ode to the many colors of our nation that gives the poem its au- thenticity. Collins !2 The title of the poem perfectly indicates its conveyed viewpoint. -

Wenner Bread was selected for the Industrial Deal of the Year award for its move from Long Island to New Brunswick, and Sandoz won Office or Mixed Use Deal of the Year for its new world headquarters in Plainsboro. Both companies were approved for tax credits under the Grow New Jersey program. Wenner Bread Products, a Long Island-based company, is transforming a vacant building in New Brunswick into a commercial bakery that will be home to 250 employees once the manufacturer completes its relocation to New Jersey. Sandoz, a division of Novartis and a global leader in the generic pharmaceutical sector, had considered a location in Pennsylvania for its headquarters, which includes 292 existing employees and the expected creation of 70 new jobs; the company ultimately leased more than 154,000 square feet of space in Plainsboro, property that had been vacant since 2013. -

As part of the celebration of that anniversary, the Library of Congress exhibited a collection of material from the magnificent Walt Whitman collection as- sembled over a period of twenty-five years by Mrs. Frank Julian Sprague, of New York City. This material was selected and pre- pared for exhibition by Dr. Joseph Auslander, Consultant in Poetry in the Library of Congress. The Library of Congress is unwilling that this exhibit should terminate without some record which may serve as an expression of its gratitude to Mrs. Sprague for her generosity in making the display possible and a witness to its appreciation of Mrs. Sprague's great service to American poetry and to the American tradition of which Walt Whitman is not only the poet but the symbol. Many of the books in Mrs. Sprague's collection are unique, some are in mint condition, none is unopened. The greater part of the collection, including the two paintings which were done from life, has never before been exhibited to the great American public for which Whitman wrote and by which he is remembered. -

However, we now face a very challenging time as our future needs will require us to find additional revenue sources to fund our Capital Program which is critical to maintaining the safety, security and serviceability of our assets. That bridge, now known as the Benjamin Franklin Bridge, was once the longest suspension bridge in the world. The Summer Camp information can be obtained separately via the Recreation Department, the Township website and the school websites. RECREATION NEWS & NOTIFICATION METHODS Recreation news and program cancellation notification will be communicated via the new GovDelivery system implemented by the Township. In order to receive communication via this new method you must register via the Township’s website. Once registered you will receive email and/or text message notification when new brochures, flyers and recreation events are posted. CONTACT: Emma Fried-Cassorla o: (215) 629-3218 c: (215) 313-5582 [email protected] FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE RIVERLINK FERRY EXPANDED SERVICE AND SEASON Delaware River Waterfront Corporation to manage RiverLink Ferry System PHILADELPHIA, PA (May 5, 2015): Starting this spring, the Delaware River Waterfront Corporation (DRWC) will assume management of the RiverLink Ferry System providing cross River transportation between the Camden and Philadelphia Waterfronts. The expanded RiverLink Ferry System includes the 517 passenger ferry, Freedom, and at select times throughout the season will include three twenty-two passenger water taxis, creating a comprehensive marine transportation service. It is DRWC’s goal to provide a seamless connection to both sides of the Delaware River to further enhance visitor and resident experiences. DRWC is coordinating with Coopers Ferry Partnership on the Camden Waterfront to market the RiverLink Ferry System, thereby further linking the two neighboring waterfronts. Attractions and partners on both sides of the river including Adventure Aquarium, Battleship NJ, Camden Riversharks, Susquehanna Bank Center, Independence Seaport Museum, Great Plaza at Penn’s Landing and others will help to encourage ridership through cohesive marketing messages. This system will provide a key component for daily visits and all major waterfront festivals and events. Visiting the attractions on both sides will now be quick, efficient and affordable. With the help of its waterfront partners DRWC is committed to providing a quality visitor experience to all users of the ferry service and to help grow attendance at all of the attractions on both the Philadelphia and Camden waterfronts.
