They are found only in tropical and subtropical zone forests of Central and South America. Of the two recognized species, the larger, Oryzomys (Oecomys) concolor, occurs in northern Colombia. The author collected 27 specimens from six localities during his 1941-43 tenure of the Walter Rathbone Bacon Traveling Scholarship and 38 specimens, including six of the smaller species, Oryzomys (Oecomys) bicolor, in other parts of Colombia while conducting the Chicago Natural History Museum-Colombian Zoological Expedi- tion (1949-52). This material and pertinent field observations are the basis of the present report. ' Previous reports in this series have been published in the Proceedings of the U.S. National Museum as follows: 1. Due to the morphological similarity in many of the groups, their taxonomy is controversial. Karyotype information proved to be an important tool for distinguishing some species because some of them are species-specific. Additionally, rodents can be an excellent model for chromosome evolution studies since many rearrangements have been described in this group.This work brings a review of cytogenetic data of Brazilian rodents, with information about diploid and fundamental numbers, polymorphisms, and geographical distribution. -

Se documenta 508 especies nativas, en 13 órdenes, Universidad Nacional Mayor de 50 familias y 218 géneros; resultando el Perú como el tercer país con la mayor diversidad de especies en el San Marcos. Nuevo Mundo después de Brasil y México, así como quinto en el mundo. Esta diversidad incluye a 40 didelfi- 3 Centro de Estudios y Promoción del Desarrollo, DESCO, Málaga morfos, 2 paucituberculados, 1 sirenio, 6 cingulados, 7 pilosos, 39 primates, 162 roedores, 1 lagomorfo, 2 Grenet 678, Umacollo, Arequipa. soricomorfos, 165 quirópteros, 34 carnívoros, 2 perisodáctilos y 47 cetartiodáctilos. Los roedores y murciélagos (327 especies) representan casi las dos terceras partes de la diversidad (64%). Cinco géneros y 65 especies (12,8%) son endémicos para Perú, siendo la mayoría de ellos roedores (45 especies, 69,2%). La mayoría de especies endémicas se encuentra restringida a las Yungas de la vertiente oriental de los Andes (39 especies, 60%) seguida de lejos por la Selva Baja (14 especies, 21,5%). -

Akodon Montensis
Supplementary Information Text Resource augmentation Several individuals were captured of each of the two target species (Akodon montensis, Oligoryzomys nigripes), for use in food preference trials, to determine the palatability of commercially available foods to be used in the resource augmentation grids. These mice were weighed, housed in separate cages, provided water ad lib, and ample amounts of trios of foods were presented during Days 2, 4, and 6 of captivity. The mice were weighed again on Day 7, and the food combinations were ranked in terms of relative weight gain (or loss) for the mice consuming them, with the assumption being that weight gain indicates a preferred and nutritionally appropriate food (or combination of foods). Beginning with eight possible food selections (peanuts, oats, flax, sesame, canary grass, sunflower, and two pet-feed mixtures), by process of eliminatory trials, a preferred food was selected separately for the feeding stations, a commercial pet-food mixture available from "Foody" company in San Lorenzo, Paraguay. The mixture is named "Super Mix", consisting of whole kernel corn, peanuts in the shell, sunflower seeds, rice and a compressed pellet of undisclosed ingredients. This mixture was briefly heated to prevent germination of any seeds, in order to prevent introduction of non- native plant species into the forest. Grid Selection Areas across the Mbaracayú Forest Biosphere Reserve (MFBR) were sampled previously for rodents and the presence of antibodies to hantavirus at 21 sites [1, 2]. Grid sites for the present study were centered on lines where seropositive animals had been encountered in the earlier study. For each of the six grids, habitat variables (vegetation and related structures) were measured at each trapping station to evaluate which grids would be paired as a control and treated grid.
