Plantas descritas originalmente de Honduras y sus nomenclaturas equivalentes actuales Cyril H. Nelson Sutherland1 Resumen: Se hace una relación de 755 nombres de plantas descritas originalmente de Honduras y sus equivalencias nomenclaturales aceptadas actualmente. De éstas, 263 son endémicas de Honduras, entre las cuales Haptanthus hazlettii Goldberg & C. Nelson y Phrygilanthus nudus A. Molina R. se consideran extintas. Se propone Haptanthaceae como una familia nueva para acomodar a Haptanthus hazlettii. Asimismo se propone la combinación nueva Spermacoce fruticosa (Standl.) Govaerts var. pubescens (Standl. & L.O. Williams) C. Nelson. Palabras clave: Descripción, equivalencias, nomenclatura, taxonomía. Abstract: A relation is made of 755 names of plants originally described from Honduras, and their presently accepted nomenclatural equivalences. Of these, 263 are endemic to Honduras, among which, Haptanthus hazlettii Goldberg & C. Nelson and Phrygilanthus nudus A. Molina R. are considered extinct. Haptanthaceae is proposed as a new family in order to accommodate Haptanthus hazlettii. Also, the new combination Spermacoce fruticosa (Standl.) Govaerts var. pubescens (Standl. & L.O. Williams) C. ©2005 Graphic Arts Network, Inc. by Jeff Borg, [email protected] STALKING WILD CATS HEAR JAGUARS ROAR IN COCKSCOMB BASIN Once upon a time in the Cockscomb Basin, poachers hunted the powerful jaguars, loggers cut the mahogany trees, and hurricanes toppled the old-growth canopy. Just 20 years later, the jaguars rule, the trees grow dense, and the only threat that remains is from hurricanes. Today, the five wild cats of Belize — jaguars, jaguarundis, margays, ocelots, and pumas — all thrive under the protection of Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary, established in 1986 as the world’s first jaguar preserve and now home to the world’s largest concentration of wild cats. Nature-lovers also thrive at Cockscomb Basin — a 128,000-acre bowl of pristine rainforest, winding rivers, and scenic waterfalls in Stann Creek District — surrounded by mountain ridges and the looming 3,675-foot Victoria Peak. People flock here to hike, camp, kayak, canoe, tube, and swim. The Belize Audubon Society manages the sanctuary, with a visitor center, Maya craft shop, and accommodations just off Southern Highway at Maya Centre. Well-marked hiking trails lead children, adults, and serious naturalists throughout the terrain. Some paths take visitors on casual strolls along riverbanks. Some pose more muscular challenges. One dry-season route dares hearty hikers to conquer Victoria Peak, a two- day trek finished by climbing up on all fours. Get a permit and take a guide. The trails reward visitors with breathtaking views across the basin, rare bird sightings, and a chance to meet diverse Belizean wildlife. While evidence of jaguars abounds, including their ominous roars, humans rarely get to see these masters of stealth. -

Abstract he avocado belongs to the genus Persea, which is one of the most controversial genera of the Lauraceae family, since the relationships within the subgenus Persea are not clear T and only recognized two species, Persea americana and Persea schiedeana. Its relationship with the subgenus Eriodaphne is also complex and there is a debate as to whether it is an independent genus. For this reason, the study aims to analyze the phylogenetic relationships within the genus Persea, with an emphasis on the subgenus Persea, using maximum parsimony and bayesian inference with the sequence of eight different fragments from nuclear, chloroplast and mitochondrial DNA. Sequences of the chloroplast ndhF, rbcL, matK, rpoC, trnH- psbA; mitochondria atp4 and cox3 and nuclear 18S rRNA were used. Fourteen fixed mutations were found in species of the subgenus Eriodaphne. -

Sunblotch symptoms are variable, but the most common in fruits are irregular sunken areas of white, yellow, or reddish color. On severely affected fruits, the sunken areas may become necrotic. ASBVd (type species Avocado sunblotch viroid, family Avsunviroidae) replicates and accumulates in the chloroplast, and it is the smallest plant pathogen. This pathogen is a circular single-stranded RNA of 246–251 nucleotides. ASBVd has a restricted host range and only few plant species of the family Lauraceae have been confirmed experimentally as additional hosts. The most reliable method to detect ASBVd in the field is to identify symptomatic fruits, complemented in the laboratory with reliable and sensitive molecular techniques to identify infected but asymptomatic trees. -

Díaz-Toribio1,3 , Victor Luna1 , Andrew P. Vovides2 Abstract: Background and Aims: There are approximately 3000 botanic gardens in the world. These institutions cultivate approximately six million plant species, representing around 100,000 taxa in cultivation. Botanic gardens make an important contributionex to situ conservation with a high number of threat- ened plant species represented in their collections. To show how the Francisco Javier Clavijero Botanic Garden (JBC) contributes to the conservation of Mexican flora, we asked the following questions: 1) How is vascular plant diversity currently conserved in the JBC?, 2) How well is this garden perform- ing with respect to the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation (GSPC) and the Mexican Strategy for Plant Conservation (MSPC)?, and 3) How has the garden’s scientific collection contributed to the creation of new knowledge (description of new plant species)? Methods: We used data from the JBC scientific living collection stored in BG-BASE. We gathered information on species names, endemism, and endan- gered status, according to national and international policies, and field data associated with each species. Key results: We found that 12% of the species in the JBC collection is under some risk category by international and Mexican laws. Plant families with the highest numbers of threatened species were Zamiaceae, Orchidaceae, Arecaceae, and Asparagaceae. Read Full License Page 1/22 Abstract Chromosome set duplication (polyploidy) drives instantaneous speciation and shifts in ecology for angiosperms, and is frequently observed in neo-endemic species. However, the extent to which chromosome set duplication is associated with endemism throughout the owering plants has not been determined. We hypothesised that across the angiosperms polyploidy is more frequent and more pronounced (higher evident ploidy levels) for recent endemics. Data on chromosome counts, molecular dating and distribution for 4210 species belonging to the major clades of angiosperms were mined from literature-based databases. As all clades include diploid taxa, with polyploids representing a possible ‘upper limit’ to the number of chromosomes over evolutionary time, upper boundary regression was used to investigate the relationship between the number of chromosomes and time since taxon divergence, both across clades and separately for families, with endemic and non-endemic species compared. A signicant negative exponential relationship between the number of chromosomes and taxon age was 2 evident across angiosperm clades (R adj=0.48 with endemics and non-endemics considered together, 2 2 R adj=0.46 for endemics; R adj=0.44 for non-endemics; p ≤0.0001 in all cases), which was three times stronger for endemics (decay constant=0.12, cf. -
