  • George Town Or Georgetown , Is the Capital of the State of Penang In
    George Town[1] or Georgetown[2], is the capital of the state of Penang in Malaysia. Named after Britain's King George III, George Town is located on the north-east corner of Penang Island and has about 220,000 inhabitants, or about 400,000 including the suburbs. Formerly a municipality and then a city in its own right, since 1976 George Town has been part of the municipality of Penang Island, though the area formerly governed by the city council is still commonly referred to as a city, and is also known as Tanjung ("The Cape") in Malay and 喬治市 (Qiáozhì Shì) in Chinese. [edit]History George Town was founded in 1786 by Captain Francis Light, a trader for the British East India Company, as base for the company in the Malay States. He obtained the island of Penang from the Sultan of Kedah and built Fort Cornwallis on the north-eastern corner of the island. The fort became the nexus of a growing trading post and the island's population reached 12,000 by 1804. The town was built on swampy land that had to be cleared of vegetation, levelled and filled. The original commercial town was laid out between Light Street, Beach Street (then running close to the seashore), Malabar Street (subsequently called Chulia Street) and Pitt Street (now called Masjid Kapitan Keling Street). The warehouses and godowns extended from Beach Street to the sea. By the 1880s, there were ghauts leading from Beach Street to the wharf and jetties as Beach Street receded inland due to land reclamation.

Multiple major cases of wildlife trafficking involving Malaysian ports have been documented in recent years, with open source and confidential reporting indicating that this activity is ongoing and may be increasing. Modus Operandi: Criminal networks are able to consistently traffic large and small quantities of illegal ivory, as well as rhino horn, pangolin, protected timber, and other wildlife products, via Malaysia’s major seaports, Port Klang, Port of Penang, Pasir Gudang Port, and Sapangar Port, according to open and confidential sources. Multiple major cases of wildlife trafficking involving Malaysia as a transit country have been documented in recent years, with open source and confidential reporting indicating that this activity is ongoing. The following current critical trends related to illicit wildlife trafficking involving Malaysian seaports are evident in open source and confidential reporting as well as Taskforce analysis of past seizures and enforcement actions: 1. KEY TRANSIT COUNTRY FOR IVORY: Malaysia is likely currently the single most significant transit country for illicit ivory trafficked between Africa and Asia, as well as a key transit location for trafficked pangolin, illegal timber, and other wildlife products. This includes both as an intermediary point for maritime shipments from Africa with final destinations in Viet Nam, Thailand, Cambodia, China, or elsewhere in Asia, or as a final declared destination country with onwards later transit in separate maritime shipments.

From Church Street and Bishop Street (which owe their names to a French church and a French bishop!), to great schools such as Convent Light Street or the Saint Xavier Institution, and to villages and plantations on the Peninsular side of Penang – Kampung Val d’Or, Kampung Alma or the Malakoff Plantations – there is a lot of French heritage in Penang. Penang was once nicknamed “The Montpellier of the Indies” – a reference to the good climate of Penang, comparable to the city in Southern France! introduction Penang could even have become a French colony! After the French Revolution of 1789, Rear-Admiral de Sercey had been sent from France with significant forces to impose the abolition of slavery on the then French territory of Ile-de-France (now Mauritius). But he also tried to extend French possessions in the region and, in July 1796, with a strong armada of six frigates, he set sail from Ile-de-France with the intention of seizing Penang from the British. The attempt was short lived, though: having suffered losses in a battle against British ships North of Sumatra on 9 September 1796, Admiral de Sercey decided to abandon his project. Penang did not become French… Nevertheless, history continues! In 2018, a “sister cities” agreement was signed between Penang and the French city of Arles - both are listed as UNESCO World Heritage.

    Chapter 1 Lim Chong Eu and Penang: Glimpses of a Personal and Political Relationship Khoo Boo Teik i and Toh Kin Woon ii Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu was born in George Town, Penang, on 28 May 1919 and died there on 24 November 2010. Of his ninety-one and a half years, Chong Eu1 spent a formative decade abroad: he was a university student in Britain (1938–1944) and a medical doctor in China (1944–1947). Barring later overseas trips mostly taken for official work, occasionally for vacation, and three times for medical convalescence or treatment, he resided in Penang. His family homes were in Macalister Road and Burmah Road, his father had his clinic in Magazine Road, and Chong Eu himself had a house each in Tanjung Bungah and Penang Hill. He attended Shih Chung School, Hutchings Primary School and Penang Free School. For a few years, Chong Eu joined his father’s practice but also served as a medical officer with the Malayan Auxiliary Air Force (1951–1954). During Malaya’s last years of colonial rule, he embarked on a career in politics, the field in which he would rise to national prominence.
