Ja just Riias. Raske, jah... Mäss elu vastu on mõttetus. Kuid teiselt poolt... valu on jäänud. Vihkamist pole. Pole ei poliitilist vihkamist ega kibestumist rahvusküsimuses. Mitte mingil juhul! Muidu 1 Oma teatri sulgemise loo avab Adolf Šapiro meile oma raamatus, mis on praegu eesti keelde tõlkimisel ja ilmub 1998. aastal Eesti Teatriliidu väljaandel. — Toimetus. Adolf Šapiro oktoobris 1997. Harri Rospu foto 3 ma poleks ju siin, vabas Eestis. Kuidas see saakski teisiti olla — lõppude lõpuks on see olnud minu elu. Nüüd oled sa nii palju reisinud, töötanud laias maailmas. Kunagi oli sul Tallinnas "Kirsiaeda" tehes esimene kord töötada võõra trupiga, väljaspool koduteatrit, võõras keeles. Kuidas tunned end praegu pidevas külalislavastaja rollis? Ma ei väsi imestamast: ikka veel on üllatav kohata sulle lähedasi inimesi kusagil võõral maal, kus sa ei arvanudki neid leiduvat. Inimesed, keda sa varem ei tundnud, kellega pole ühiseid mälestusi, ühist eluteed, ühist tausta keskkonna ja probleemide mõttes. Need inimesed räägivad ja mõtlevad sulle võõras keeles. Ja äkki — lähedane mõtteviis, hingelaad, eneseväljendusharjumused. Tekib kontakt, vastastikune huvi, sümpaatia, hell kiindumus. Kas see pole üllatav nähtus siin ilmas? Ants Eskola, Velda Otsus, Linda Rummo, Mikk Mikiver, Jüri Järvet ja noored, tookordsed noored — Mari Lill, Tõnu Tamm, Enn Kraam, Luule Komissarov, Iivi Lepik...

Operatic Danaids Peter Burian ([email protected]) CAMWS 2018 1. Ancient sources A. Apollodorus Bibliotheca 2.1.5 But the sons of Aegyptus came to Argos, and exhorted Danaus to lay aside his enmity, and begged to marry his daughters. Now Danaus distrusted their professions and bore them a grudge on account of his exile; nevertheless, he consented to the marriage and allotted the damsels among them. First, they picked out Hypermnestra as the eldest to be the wife of Lynceus…. When they had got their brides by lot, Danaus made a feast and gave his daughters daggers; and they slew their bridegrooms as they slept, all but Hypermnestra; for she saved Lynceus because he had respected her virginity: wherefore Danaus shut her up and kept her under ward. But the rest of the daughters of Danaus buried the heads of their bridegrooms in Lerna and paid funeral honors to their bodies in front of the city; and Athena and Hermes purified them at the command of Zeus. Danaus afterwards united Hypermnestra to Lynceus; and bestowed his other daughters on the victors in an athletic contest. (trans. J. G. Frazer) B. Hyginus Fabulae 168 Danaus son of Belus had 50 daughters by several wives. His brother Aegyptus had just as many sons, and he wanted to kill his brother Danaus and his daughters so that he alone would possess his father's kingdom. When Danaus first outage is realized what was going on, he fled from Africa to Argos with the help of Minerva, who, they say, built the first two-prowed ship so that Danaus when Egypt is found out could escape.

Translating, Adapting, And Performing Opera In Eighteenth-Century Cosmopolitan Europe: Lorenzo Da Ponte At The King's Theatre Abstract This dissertation examines music and text circulation in cosmopolitan Europe during the last decades of the eighteenth century through the lens of translation. London in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries was the largest center of Italian operatic performance outside of Italy. All performances sung at the King’s Theatre, London, were sung in Italian, the presumed language of opera, even when the works had been originated in other languages. This created the need for a culture of translation and adaptation of works from abroad, making them suitable for a London audience partially through the retention of foreignness and partially through domesticating practices. In the 1790s, a period of political tension between Britain and post-Revolution France, four French operas were presented at the King's Theatre in Italian translations attributed to the poet Lorenzo Da Ponte (1749-1838): Gluck's Iphignie en Tauride, Grtry's Zmire et Azor, Monsigny's La belle Arsne, and Sacchini's Arvire et vlina.

  • Marmontel/[Piccinni] on Neapolitan Opera
Marmontel/[Piccinni] on Neapolitan Opera Beverly Jerold (Princeton Research Forum) [email protected] When the new year of 1777 broke upon Paris, the writer and Académie française member Jean-François Marmontel unexpectedly and repeatedly found himself the target of anonymous ridicule and sarcasm in the new Journal de Paris, the first daily newspaper to be established in France. This incited the quarrel between the Gluckists and the Piccinnists, in which the former used the power of a daily paper with no competitors to bar from the Paris Opéra any challenge to Gluck’s domination — an unusual episode to be treated in a Royal Musical Association Monograph. Its events inspired Marmontel’s epic poem Polymnie1, most of which he declined to publish until after his death because it involved recognizable personalities. The first four cantos, published in 1787, concern only historical personages and aesthetic principles of opera. While modern reference works have labeled Polymnie a ‘satire’, it is instead an accurate rendering of events that can be documented. As the librettist for the Italian composer Niccolò Piccinni’s first Paris opera Roland, Marmontel undoubtedly learned much about Italian opera and its leading figures, conveying it in two cantos of Polymnie. The work is named for one of the nine muses Polyhymnia, goddess of song and inventor of harmony, and relates her efforts on behalf of a natural, unaffected style of song and singing. When Marmontel contrasts Neapolitan composition with music having different traits, it is an oblique reference to Christoph Willibald Gluck’s operas for Paris. In 1773, another well-known figure, Charles Burney, also commented on the difference between the music of Johann Adolph Hasse, who composed in the Neapolitan manner, and that of Gluck’s new style: 1.

The Society for Eighteenth-Century Music and The Royal Swedish Academy of Music Ninth Biennial SECM Conference: Global Intersections in the Music of the 18th Century Virtual Conference: August 6,7 and 13,14, 2021 PROGRAM The organizers would like to thank the following for providing support for this virtual conference: Special thanks to the program committee: Janet Page (chair), Ashley Greathouse, Bertil van Boer, Erik Wallrup. The following also were crucial to the organization of this conference: Pia Bygdéus and Fredrik Wetterqvist of The Royal Swedish Academy of Music; Evan Cortens, Guido Olivieri, Alison DeSimone of the Society for Eighteenth-Century Music. Welcome Bertil van Boer, Conference Organizer This conference, a collaboration between the Royal Swedish Academy of Music (Kungliga Musikaliska Akademien) and the Society for Eighteenth-Century Music was originally scheduled in Stockholm, Sweden for March 18-21,2020. Shortly before it was to have commenced, the global pandemic forced its postponement in the face of travel restrictions, enforced closures and quarantines, and other things that would have made proceeding difficult if not impossible. Now, almost a year and a half later, it is being reinstated. Given the waning days of this pandemic and the slow reopening of life around the globe, it was decided in the interests of continued caution with a variable situation to revive the conference as a virtual one. Though everyone, from organizers to presenters to participants, would have liked to meet and interact in person, we are pleased to present the following program over the course of these two weekends. We hope that this will be a conference of stimulating and exciting papers, and though we are still meeting in the virtual world, we are encouraged by the international scope of the presentations.
