45 Tropical Bryology 15: 45-76, 1998 Foliicolous lichens and their lichenicolous fungi collected during the Smithsonian International Cryptogamic Expedition to Guyana 1996 Robert Lücking Lehrstuhl für Pflanzensystematik, Universität Bayreuth, D-95447 Bayreuth, Germany Abstract: A total of 233 foliicolous lichen species and 18 lichenicolous fungi are reported from Guyana as a result of the Smithsonian „International Cryptogamic Expedition to Guyana“ 1996. Three lichens and two lichenicolous fungi are new to science: Arthonia grubei sp.n., Badimia subelegans sp.n., Calopadia pauciseptata sp.n., Opegrapha matzeri sp.n. (lichenicolous on Amazonomyces sprucei), and Pyrenidium santessonii sp.n. (lichenicolous on Bacidia psychotriae). The new combination Strigula janeirensis (Bas.: Phylloporina janeirensis; syn.: Raciborskiella janeirensis) is proposed. Apart from Amazonomyces sprucei and Bacidia psychotriae, Arthonia lecythidicola (with the lichenicolous A. pseudopegraphina) and Byssolecania deplanata (with the lichenicolous Opegrapha cf. kalbii) are reported as new hosts for lichenicolous fungi. Arthonia pseudopegraphina growing on A. lecythidicola is the first known case of adelphoparasitism at generic level in foliicolous Arthonia. Arthonia flavoverrucosa, Badimia polillensis, and Byssoloma vezdanum are new records for the Neotropics, and 115 species are new for Guyana, resulting in a total of c. 280 genuine foliicolous species reported for that country, while Porina applanata and P. verruculosa are excluded from its flora. The foliicolous lichen flora of Guyana is representative for the Guianas (Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana) and has great affinities with the Amazon region, while the degree of endemism is low. A characteristic species for this area is Amazonomyces sprucei. Species composition is typical of Neotropical lowland to submontane humid forests, with a dominance of the genera Porina, Strigula, and Mazosia. -

Massal. was revised by Egea & Torrente (1993) and represented by 20 species and one variety, among them four were previously reported from India Bactrospora jenikii (Vìzda) Egea & Torrente, B. lamprospora (Nyl.) Lendemer, B. metabola (Nyl.) Egea & Torrente, B. myriadea (Fée) Egea & Torrente (Singh & Sinha 2010). The genus Bactrospora differs from similar genera Lecanactis and Opegrapha by lecideine ascomata, dark proper exciple and elongate, transversely septate, fragmenting ascospores (Ponzetti & McCune 2006). The allopatric genus Sigridea was monographed by Tehler (1993) with four species world- wide. In India Nylander (1867) recorded single species of Sigridea as Platygrapha galucomoides Nyl. which is now known as Sigridea glaucomoides (Nyl.) Tehler. Sigridea species are recognized by white thallus, circular ascomata, well developed thalline margin, hyaline, 3-septate, curved ascospores with one end tapering and the presence of psoromic acid. -

Supplementary Data S1 Three Major Ecogeographic Areas of Evolution in Fruticose Ramalinaceae Three geographical areas appear significant to the evolutionary history of lichens in arid regions. We focus on three fruticose genera of the Ramalinaceae: Nambialina (gen. nov.), Niebla, and Vermilacinia. They have adapted to obtaining moisture from fog in the following coastal regions of our study: (I) California-Baja California coastal chaparral and Vizcaíno deserts (II) South America Atacama and Sechura deserts (III) South Africa coastal fynbos and Namib Desert The botanical significance of each of these will be briefly discussed. Chapter (I) further includes updates on the ecogeographical data and evolutionary interpretation for the genera Niebla and Vermilacinia in Baja California. (I) California and Baja California Coastal Chaparral, Chaparral-Desert Transition and Vizcaíno Deserts 1. California and Baja California Coastal Chaparral The lichen flora of the Baja California peninsula (Mexico, Baja California and Baja California Sur) is pretty well known as a result of the many splendid contributions by lichenologists to the « Lichen Flora of the Greater Sonoran Desert Region » (Nash et al. 2002, 2004, 2007). The « Greater » portion extends the lichen flora to chaparral, oak woodlands, and conifer forests in southern California, northern Baja California and southern Nevada and all of Arizona; to the deserts of Mojave, Arizona, Vizcaíno, and Magdalena; and to the subtropical vegetation in Baja California Sur and Sonora, Mexico that include lowland mixed deciduous-succulent bushlands, open deciduous montane woodlands/forests, and the evergreen pine-oak woodlands/forests. The striking red pigments in the apothecia of species of Haematomma are concentrated mostly in the epihymenium above the tips of the asci. In this Haematomma persoonii the pigment is a tetracyclic anthraquinone called russulone. The compound has been found in the epihymenia of eight of Australia’s 13 known species of the genus. Haematomma persoonii colonizes bark in the woodlands and forests of eastern Queensland and New South Wales in Australia. Abstracts for IAL 6- ABLS Joint Meeting (2008) AÐALSTEINSSON, KOLBEINN 1, HEIÐMARSSON, STARRI 2 and VILHELMSSON, ODDUR 1 1The University of Akureyri, Borgir Nordurslod, IS-600 Akureyri, Iceland, 2Icelandic Institute of Natural History, Akureyri Division, Borgir Nordurslod, IS-600 Akureyri, Iceland Isolation and characterization of non-phototrophic bacterial symbionts of Icelandic lichens Lichens are symbiotic organisms comprise an ascomycete mycobiont, an algal or cyanobacterial photobiont, and typically a host of other bacterial symbionts that in most cases have remained uncharacterized. In the current project, which focuses on the identification and preliminary characterization of these bacterial symbionts, the species composition of the resident associate microbiota of eleven species of lichen was investigated using both 16S rDNA sequencing of isolated bacteria growing in pure culture and Denaturing Gradient Gel Electrophoresis (DGGE) of the 16S-23S internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region amplified from DNA isolated directly from lichen samples. Gram-positive bacteria appear to be the most prevalent, especially actinomycetes, although bacilli were also observed. Gamma-proteobacteria and species from the Bacteroides/Chlorobi group were also observed. Among identified genera are Rhodococcus, Micrococcus, Microbacterium, Bacillus, Chryseobacterium, Pseudomonas, Sporosarcina, Agreia, Methylobacterium and Stenotrophomonas .
