Glass baubles of different sizes and colors are attached to this frame, glinting and reflecting shades of light in the room. Upon entering the exhibition hall, I was struck by how this ordi- nary bed had been propelled into the realm of the marvelous. Light fil- tered through the glass and a sense of suspension accentuate an empty mattress, fostering a sense of wonder and an almost magical luminosity which emphasizes the absence of a human figure. Othoniel’s mid-career retrospective, “ My Way ”, ran at the Centre Pompidou in Paris from 2 March-23 May 2011 1. Part of the exhibition was organized in the children’s hall around the theme of Le réel merveilleux (The Marvelous Real) and featured his “ Le Petit Théâtre de Peau d’Ane ” (2004) (The Little Theatre of Donkeyskin) ; tiny figurines inspired by Perrault’s tale, designed at an early age by French novelist Pierre Loti, are staged in set- tings of reflecting glass by Othoniel. The artist’s work with Murano glass explores the frontiers between the world of magical fantasy and reality. “ My Bed ” is enthralling in that its empty mattress tempts the reader to fill the space of the absent body. The fairy tale figure of Sleeping Beauty immediately comes to mind. Such projections are critically examined in this collection. Scholars from different academic realms and critical tradi- tions have been brought together to re-investigate “ Sleeping Beauty ” as we know it, multiplying the lenses of investigation with the goal of defamiliarization. The interdisciplinarity privileged by Martine Hennard Dutheil de la Rochère and Véronique Dasen has pushed the collection beyond the limits of folklore and literature, allowing the complex rela- tionship between religious ritual, myth, and tale to govern the princi- ples of the study. The nexus for reflection is the feminine figure, with a particular focus on the genealogy of the fairies of Beauty’s christen- ing, and the link to the concept of destiny and movement in and out of life and death. The feminine position is variously occupied throughout the volume by historical figures, mythical beings, divinities, fictional characters, fairies, and ordinary humans, allowing the sedimented cul- ture around the tale gradually to come to light. Areas of research range from Mesopotamian figures related to birthing, Egyptian divinities, Greek Moirae, Roman Fates, the fairies of the more well-known work of Perrault and Grimm, to the disconcerting “ Madam ” figures in the brothels of Yasunari Kawabata’s stories. The “ Beauty ” character is also revisited through the literature of the Middle Ages, Perrault, Grimm, to contemporary Disney representations, Angela Carter’s postmodern col- lage figure of the Vampire/Sleeping Beauty, and Jane Yolen’s self-con- scious transmutations of “ Briar Rose ” into holocaust narrative. As one reads the collection, the changeable identities of female figures overlap, and even coalesce at moments, resulting in an uncanny effect of a kalei- doscopic palimpsest through which images and concepts emerge, con- verge, change shape and expand.

    Post Scriptum: A Number of Observations, with Hindsight Astronomia Etrusco-Romana was first published in Italian in 2003, following Astronomy and Calendar in Ancient Rome—The Eclipse Festivals in 2001, and Le Feste di Venere—Fertilità femminile e configurazioni astrali nel calendario di Roma antica in 1996. In nigh on a decade of ‘‘crazy, desperate’’ study, as Giacomo Leopardi would have it, I have reconstructed a solid framework of the Roman calendar’s astronomical underpinnings, especially the Numan calendar. Stars, Myths and Rituals in Etruscan Rome makes only minimal adjustments to this framework, as well as adding some interesting elements to the fray. Over this time—and at long last—there has been a radical change in our understanding of man’s relationship with the heavens during the time of Rome’s early kings. The eighth century BCE calendars that have survived the centuries are no longer viewed as the basic calendars of an agricultural and pastoral society, lacking in any consideration for heavenly phenomena or the movements of heavenly bodies; calendar feast days are no longer considered simple anniversaries of natural events, such as storing away grain or lambing time. On the contrary, the Romulean calendar demonstrates an awareness of a number of significant celestial phenomena, while the Numan calendar and cycle are a highly advanced—indeed, close to perfect—mechanism for monitoring observable movements in the solar system. The end result of this research is a demonstration not just that Romans in Augustus’ day were mistaken in their belief—asserted time and time again by Ovid, our best witness1—that Romans were uninterested in and had no understanding of astronomy.

We also focused in a detailed manner on the most important festival of the month in question, the Ianus Festival. The study examines generally the religious traditions and beliefs of the Romans within the framework of the work in question, as well as the look of the poet to the Roman festivities and the importance he gave to God Ianus.     Robert Graves – The Greek Myths 1955, revised 1960 Robert Graves was born in 1895 at Wimbledon, son of Alfred Perceval Graves, the Irish writer, and Amalia von Ranke. He went from school to the First World War, where he became a captain in the Royal Welch Fusiliers. His principal calling is poetry, and his Selected Poems have been published in the Penguin Poets. Apart from a year as Professor of English Literature at Cairo University in 1926 he has since earned his living by writing, mostly historical novels which include: I, Claudius; Claudius the God; Sergeant Lamb of the Ninth; Count Belisarius; Wife to Mr Milton (all published as Penguins); Proceed, Sergeant Lamb; The Golden Fleece; They Hanged My Saintly Billy; and The Isles of Unwisdom. He wrote his autobiography, Goodbye to All That (a Penguin Modem Classic), in 1929. His two most discussed non-fiction books are The White Goddess, which presents a new view of the poetic impulse, and The Nazarene Gospel Restored (with Joshua Podro), a re-examination of primitive Christianity. Myths often tell about the creation of the world (and about its destruction as well), about the creation of men, and, also, they provide lessons on a moral code by which to live. They were attempts to provide rationale to natural events and to human emotion. Mythological stories generally were passed on orally from generation to succeeding generation. Each tale, embellished and "corrupted" through the re-tellings, was probably a reasoned explanation of the facts as seen by unsophisticated and uneducated eyes.
