Grabowicz Giovanna Siedina The Reception of Horace in the Courses of Poetics at the Kyiv Mohyla Academy: 17th-First Half of the 18th Century Abstract For the first time, the reception of the poetic legacy of the Latin poet Horace (65 B.C.-8 B.C.) in the poetics courses taught at the Kyiv Mohyla Academy (17th-first half of the 18th century) has become the subject of a wide-ranging research project presented in this dissertation. Quotations from Horace and references to his oeuvre have been divided according to the function they perform in the poetics manuals, the aim of which was to teach pupils how to compose Latin poetry. Three main aspects have been identified: the first consists of theoretical recommendations useful to the would-be poets, which are taken mainly from Horace’s Ars poetica. -

Beltane, a Season of Fire
Welcome to Beltane, a season of fire. Happy May Day! Right now, people are dancing merrily around the May Pole. Others are celebrating May Day by delivering May baskets to their neighbors. Here in Florida, we are in the throes of summertime. It has been in the 90s with no rain in sight. Everything outside is turning brown from the high temperatures. Over the weekend, we had record- breaking temperatures. My husband took this picture of the sun setting over the backyard. Beltane falls within the Ogham month of Huath. This is a time for cleaning the temples, which also means our bodies. We should look at how we feed ourselves not only physically but also mentally. If there are areas of your life that need to be changed, now is the time to do it. Beltane is also the time to honor our sexuality. As Dianics, we celebrate our women’s blood and at Beltane we honor young women as the Maiden. They become women through their first menstruation. Women’s blood is symbolic for our potential to create life whether it is through childbirth or creativity. 1 The Sandhill cranes have been walking around with their new babies. They are so cute and grow up so fast. We are waiting for the turkeys to show us their new babies. So far, we have seen the males with a few females but no babies. Thomas Hart Benton: Painter of Everyday America Thomas Hart Benton was born in Missouri in 1889. Throughout his long life he made thousands of drawings and paintings. He was inspired by his experiences of America. As a boy his mother took Tom, his two sisters, and his brother to visit her family in Texas. He traveled with his father, who was running for US Congress. When his father won, the Bentons lived in Washington DC. They came home to Missouri in the summers, where young Tom had a pony, took care of a cow, and picked strawberries. (It was on the cover of Time magazine, December 24, 1934 Tom's first job was as a newspaper artist in Joplin, Missouri. He studied art in Chicago, Illinois, then in Paris, and finally in New York, New York. During World War I, Benton served in the Navy in Norfolk, Virginia. He created camouflage paint designs for Navy ships. After the war, Benton returned to New York City where he taught art. There he met and married his wife, Rita. The Benton family lived most of the year in New York, and spent their summers on an island off Thomas Hart Benton, 1943, July Hay, egg tempera and oil on the coast of masonite, 38” x 26.7/8” Massachusetts. Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York The death of his father was a shock to Benton. He started to take long walks in the Catskill Mountains of New York. -

Post Scriptum: A Number of Observations, with Hindsight Astronomia Etrusco-Romana was first published in Italian in 2003, following Astronomy and Calendar in Ancient Rome—The Eclipse Festivals in 2001, and Le Feste di Venere—Fertilità femminile e configurazioni astrali nel calendario di Roma antica in 1996. In nigh on a decade of ‘‘crazy, desperate’’ study, as Giacomo Leopardi would have it, I have reconstructed a solid framework of the Roman calendar’s astronomical underpinnings, especially the Numan calendar. Stars, Myths and Rituals in Etruscan Rome makes only minimal adjustments to this framework, as well as adding some interesting elements to the fray. Over this time—and at long last—there has been a radical change in our understanding of man’s relationship with the heavens during the time of Rome’s early kings. The eighth century BCE calendars that have survived the centuries are no longer viewed as the basic calendars of an agricultural and pastoral society, lacking in any consideration for heavenly phenomena or the movements of heavenly bodies; calendar feast days are no longer considered simple anniversaries of natural events, such as storing away grain or lambing time. On the contrary, the Romulean calendar demonstrates an awareness of a number of significant celestial phenomena, while the Numan calendar and cycle are a highly advanced—indeed, close to perfect—mechanism for monitoring observable movements in the solar system. The end result of this research is a demonstration not just that Romans in Augustus’ day were mistaken in their belief—asserted time and time again by Ovid, our best witness1—that Romans were uninterested in and had no understanding of astronomy.
