Zendaya Collaborates with Artist Simone Leigh for the Cover of GARAGE Magazine In a New Portfolio for the Magazine’s 17th Issue, Zendaya Brings Leigh’s Majestic Sculptures to Life, Photographed by Ryan McGinley — AVAILABLE WORLDWIDE ON SEPTEMBER 5, 2019 — (NEW YORK, NY — SEPTEMBER 3, 2019) — Today, GARAGE Magazine reveals the cover of its new issue: Zendaya in collaboration with 2018 Hugo Boss Prize winner Simone Leigh, photographed by Ryan McGinley. Coinciding with Leigh’s solo exhibition at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, long-term installation on the High Line, and participation in the Whitney Biennial, the cover depicts Zendaya as one of Leigh’s majestic sculptures, which honor the agency of black women and their power to inhabit worlds of their own creation. Under the leadership of Editor-in-Chief Mark Guiducci, the magazine’s seventeenth issue tackles the theme of Can we live?, examining survival mechanisms from detachment to activism and collaboration. The issue begins with Zendaya, who this year shed her Disney skin with HBO’s Euphoria. “Zendaya’s character Rue is an instant avatar for the Trump era—but the opposite of Zendaya herself, who seems to be preternaturally engaged, a born activist,” says Guiducci. “Even if she feels conflicted about that label, as she explains in conversation with Thelma Golden, director of the Studio Museum in Harlem, Zendaya is someone who can’t help but give a damn.” “I feel very lucky to be in a position to create more complex representations of black female experience,” says Simone Leigh. “That’s one of the reasons why Zendaya’s work is really exciting, because it’s so atypical of a role that would be given to a young black woman.” “Through my work, I’m just allowing people’s stories to be told,” says Zendaya. “Hopefully, one day I’ll be able to be in a position where I can open doors for people who look like me—and for people who don’t look like me.” Above: ZENDAYA by SIMONE LEIGH as photographed by RYAN MCGINLEY for GARAGE MAGAZINE Issue 17 A LOOK INSIDE THE ISSUE: FEATURES: ● ZENDAYA and SIMONE LEIGH in conversation with THELMA GOLDEN on representation and storytelling of the lives of black women ● A portfolio of work by artist JOSH KLINE and a conversation about how it relates to climate change with HALEY MELLIN ● DAN THAWLEY on French artist JEAN MARIE APPRIOU’s installation of his monumental aluminum horse sculptures in Central Park ● STEVE MADDEN’s niece, T KIRA MADDEN contributes a work of fiction starring the bobblehead models from Madden’s iconic early 2000s advertisements ● HARRIET TUBMAN — When the American government put a plan to replace Andrew Jackson's portrait of Harriet Tubman's on hold, artist CAPTAIN EYELINER took matters into its own hands ● GARAGE presents a special partnership between AGONA and the CENTER FOR CREATIVE GROWTH to bring CARRIE OYAMA’s work to life in support of an organization that helps those with disabilities find their artist voice ● GARAGE speaks with RAYMOND PETTIBON, a punk having a good time with his DIOR MEN collaboration ● GARAGE’s Features Director LAIA GARCIA-FURTADO on how JEN-FANG SHUEH of Tokyo label JENNY FAX is making the clothes for your inner angsty teen FASHION EDITORIALS: ● Photographer PETRA COLLINS teams up with stylist KATE YOUNG for a fashion editorial inspired by the women of Inwood, manhattan’s northernmost neighborhood ● The 23 year old portraitist ALANA O'HERLIHY explores the character of a woman reconciling adolescent traumas with GARAGE’S Fashion Director GABRIELLA KAREFA-JOHNSON ● London-born photographer NADINE IJEWERE captures progressive couture in Paris ● Photographer CASPER SEJERSEN teams up with legendary stylist PATTI WILSON to capture fashion that takes up space as the world nears its end ABOUT GARAGE MAGAZINE GARAGE is a global leader in contemporary art, fashion, and luxury, committed to bringing to life the most original and ambitious collaborative projects in those fields.
