In addition to Simone Leigh and Zendaya, notable guests included actors MJ Rodriguez (Pose) and Alia Shawkat (Arrested Development, Search Party); models Jessica Hart, Jacob Bixenman, Kelly Sawyer Patricof; musicians Moses Sumney and Kilo Kish; filmmakers Spike Jonze (Her, Adaptation, Being John Malkovich) and Chris Moukarbel (Wig, Gaga: Five Foot Two); screenwriter Simon Kinberg (X-Men franchise, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Sherlock Holmes); artists Alex Israel, Jordan Wolfson, and Jen Guidi; fashion designers Kate and Laura Mulleavy (Rodarte) and Greg Chait (The Elder Statesman); poet, writer, and activist Cleo Wade; gallerist David Kordansky; MOCA Los Angeles Director Klaus Beisenbach; writer, producer and curator Neville Wakefield; ForYourArt Founder Bettina Korek; photographers Luke Gilford and Campbell Addy; and GARAGE Magazine Creative Director Brian Phillips and Fashion Director Gabriella Karefa-Johnson, among others.

Under the leadership of Editor-in-Chief Mark Guiducci, the magazine’s seventeenth issue tackles the theme of Can we live?, examining survival mechanisms from detachment to activism and collaboration. The issue begins with Zendaya, who this year shed her Disney skin with HBO’s Euphoria. “Zendaya’s character Rue is an instant avatar for the Trump era—but the opposite of Zendaya herself, who seems to be preternaturally engaged, a born activist,” says Guiducci. “Even if she feels conflicted about that label, as she explains in conversation with Thelma Golden, director of the Studio Museum in Harlem, Zendaya is someone who can’t help but give a damn.”
