The Loft Cinema’s marquee was originally constructed in 1969 at the same time as the theatre itself, and then expanded from one panel to two when a second screen was added in 1972; it remained a two-panel marquee for 30 years. In 2002, a monsoon severely damaged the top panel of the marquee, and it was removed. Since then, restoring the marquee to its original height and look has always been in our grand plans for refreshing the space! The marquee is an iconic Speedway sign, and a crucial part of The Loft Cinema’s brand and identity. Since at least 2002, the marquee has served as The Loft Cinema’s logo. The marquee IS The Loft Cinema! The restoration of the marquee will have the additional benefit of converting all of the lighting to LED, continuing The Loft Cinema’s commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship. To support this effort, we’re celebrating the 50th anniversary of Woodstock with a very special fundraising screening of Woodstock: The Director’s Cut on Saturday, June 29th. Tickets to the screening include dinner served under the stars, two drinks, dessert, a groovy goodie bag, and more! Additional details are available on pages 24-25. Come celebrate with us or consider making a donation at loftcinema.org/support-the-loft/donate “If you’re into cities, urban history, or even typefaces, it’s hard to ignore a theater marquee. These architectural appendages have lured us into plays and movies for decades, but changing tastes and technologies have made them a more uncommon sight. As they become more rare, old marquees have taken on a deeper cultural meaning, frequently serving as visual anchors for a street or cultural district.” – Mark Byrnes, CityLab Peggy Johnson, Executive Director The Loft Cinema SIGN UP TODAY!
