She is best known for her music of the 80’s and 90’s … her hits include “Morning Train,” “You Could Have Been With Me,” “Almost Over You,” “Telefone (Long Distance Love Affair),” “Strut,” “Sugar Walls,” “Eternity,” “U Got The Look,” “Days Like This,” “The Lover In Me,” "What Comes Naturally" and her 1983 country duet with Kenny Rogers, “We’ve Got Tonight.” Several of Sheena’s hit singles have been used in such films as the James Bond movie, For Your Eyes Only in 1981 and About Last Night in 1986. INDIAN IMMIGRANT WOMEN’S POST-DIVORCE EXPERIENCE by Supriya Bhattacharyya B.A., The University of Victoria, 2005 A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS in The Faculty of Graduate Studies (Family Studies) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (Vancouver) April 2012 © Supriya Bhattacharyya, 2012 Abstract The post-divorce experience has been the topic of much research in Western, industrialized nations. Little is known about the experiences of women from non-Western countries who have immigrated to Western countries. This study explores the post-divorce experiences of immigrant women from India who came to Canada with their husbands and subsequently got divorced. This study examines the economic, social, and residential changes these women faced after their divorces; the resources they used to cope with the changes; and the effects of their religions on their attitudes towards divorce. Qualitative data were collected via face-to-face interviews. Six women from Hindu and Sikh backgrounds, residing in the Greater Vancouver area, took part in this study. A grounded theory approach was used to analyze the data. As expected from previous findings, participants experienced a significant decrease in their incomes; their social networks diminished; and most left their marital residence. Most participants did not receive their share of the marital property, which is a key contrast to the experience of non-Indian women from the Western world. Contrary to previous studies that suggested South Asian women experience banishment from their families, every participant stated that she received full support from her family. The last finding concerns the influence of religion on the way these women perceived divorce.

Siblings, Sexualities, and Secrets: Exploring the Sibling Coming Out Experience Sarah Witcombe-Hayes School of Social Sciences Cardiff University August 2014 This thesis is submitted to Cardiff University in fulfilment of the degree Doctor of Philosophy 2 Abstract This thesis presents an in-depth, qualitative mixed method (QMM) inquiry into the coming out experiences of 19 lesbian, gay, bisexual (LGB) and 6 heterosexual brothers and sisters. It investigates what happens to sibling relationships, sibling identities, and sibling practices when non-heterosexuality is disclosed or discovered. This study seeks to explore how LGB individuals manage their sexuality in sibling and wider family dynamics; the difficulties of keeping secrets, the fears of being rejected, and the joys or disappointments experienced as they negotiate their new sexual identities. This study also explores how heterosexual siblings are emotionally affected by the disclosure of their sibling’s sexuality, and the impact that non-heterosexuality can have upon the relationships between brothers and sisters over time. The analysis is based upon data generated through semi-structured interviews, sibling sticker charts, research diaries, and debrief meetings. The research concludes that heterosexual siblings are significant in the process of coming out, but that disclosure is often far from simple. What is revealed is that the lives of siblings are meshed in wider family connections (specifically parents) and that the decisions about whether or not to come out to heterosexual brothers and sisters are often made in light of family responsibilities, obligations and commitments. The research shows that when parents hold homophobic or hostile attitudes towards non-heterosexuality this can create barriers to openness between siblings, causing tension in family relationships.
