In the Spirit of the Ancestors: Contemporary Northwest Coast Art at the Burke Museum. Robin K. Wright and Kathryn Bunn-Marcuse, eds. Seattle: University of Washington Press. 150 pp.* Reviewed by Jay Miller In the Spirit of the Ancestors inaugurates a series from the Bill Holm Center Series titled “Native Art of the Pacific Northwest.” Its eight chapters bring together working artists and scholars from the entire Pacific coastline, assessing developments since the landmark “A Time of Gathering” exhibition and book that marked the 1989 centennial of Washington State as well as the 2006 exhibition with the same title as this book. It also profusely illustrates items from the Burke collection of 2,400 recent Northwest Coast art works. Shaun Peterson’s “Coast Salish Design: An Anticipated Southern Analysis” describes and illustrates with examples his struggles with mastering his ancestral art tradition, despite strong financial and regional pressures to make north coast formline style art, which is recognizable to non-specialist audiences and sells well. Learning from museum collections, older artists, and trial and error, Peterson realized Salish designs were defined by “cutout negative areas…to suggest movement” (14-15). His epiphany came with wing designs, whose key elements are crescents and wedges, not a dominant eye indicating joint mobility. Intended mostly for private and family use, Salish art was not public art, though many aspects of it have now become commercialized as savvy clientele grows within the United States and British Columbia triangle marked by the cities of Seattle, Vancouver, and Victoria. Margaret Blackman discusses the collection of 1,166 Northwest silkscreen prints that she and her husband assembled, which has been housed at the Burke Museum since 1998. -

CHAPTER2 Form in Northwest Coast Art BILL HOLM y subject is form in Northwest Coast Indian art, sculptural styles of the Northwest Coast can be seen to and of course it is much too big a subject to deal be at least partially derived from a two dimensional space Mwith at all adequately in one paper. Without division through a continual process of refining positive form there is no Northwest Coast Indian art. Its form, the negative form. Early silhouette figures with incised fea two and three dimensional shapes and their characteristics, tures and detail are perhaps the immediate forerunners of their relationship to one another, their relationship to the fully sculptural work on the Northwest Coast. At the same whole composition, and the fmal composition itself, time that the two dimensional art tradition was developing, enable us to recognize Northwest Coast art as an entity. I propose that it diverged into a number of different styles, The Northwest Coast is a long coast with many sub each retaining some of the basic conceptual features, styles, and the art extends over a long time period; there such as the raised positive-recessed negative concept, and are many variations and it is difficult to discuss them all some formal features such as crescent and T-shaped reliefs at one time. Some of these statements I shall make are (or cuneiform reliefs as Suttles prefers to call them), the not fully thought out. I know I don't have all the answers so-called Northwest Coast eye of varying forms, and yet. -

Chris Paul Is a Coast Salish Artist Whose Work We Started to Collect in 2004
September 2013, Issue 5 Salish Weave Collection – Newsletter Chris Paul is a Coast Salish artist whose work we started to collect in 2004. The imagery of two of his drums, Conservation and Swan Drum was used to print two limited editions of 50 serigraphs that are included in the Salish Weave Collection Box Set I. Works of glass are also part of the collection. In this newsletter, we introduce Chris and present some of his most recent work exhibited at Alcheringa Gallery of Victoria, BC until September 14. For this exhibition, Chris joined his friend and mentor Mark Preston, a Tlingit artist from the Yukon, whom he met while training in Hazelton, Northern BC. Born near Victoria, British Columbia in 1969, a member of the Tsartlip nation, Chris was immersed in Coast Salish art as a child. He completed one year of training at the Gitanmaax School of Northwest Coast Art in ‘Ksan and a two- year apprenticeship under celebrated Tsimshian artist, Roy Henry Vickers. Chris’ artwork often depicts flora and fauna near his home on Vancouver Island and the mythologies of his culture. His designs are rendered as limited edition prints, paintings, carvings, jewelry, glass sculptures and sandblasted cedar panels such as A New Day Panel at the right. In 2007, Chris was commissioned by the Sidney Pier Hotel and Spa. He created three large-scale etched glass panels for the lobby and smaller panels for each of the hotel’s 55 rooms. Chris also gained A New Day Panel exposure through the hit television series Sandblasted red cedar, paint Grey’s Anatomy in which some of his prints 60" x 12" x 1.75" were featured. -

Shoreline Public Art presents Shoreline Indigenous Connections Shoreline Public Art recognizes and acknowledges the presence and ongoing contributions of the original residents of the land where we place artworks in public space. This area remains the home to many Salish indigenous communities from around the Salish Sea region, including the locally affiliated Duwamish, Suquamish, Snoqualmie, Tulalip, and many others who trace their ancestry through a variety of different tribal affiliations. Please join us in honoring these ancestral grounds by expressing gratitude for the people who have cared for this land across the generations and help us celebrate the resilience and strength that all indigenous communities continue to show throughout our region and beyond. Of the approximately 45 pieces of permanent public art in the outdoor collection in Shoreline, about half are owned by the City and half are owned by other entities; we celebrate the work of six in particular today that reflect the ongoing contribution of indigenous artists. This guide is meant to serve as a living document for future growth and additions; it will be displayed on the Public Art webpage and be available for download as a PDF as well as an on-demand guide accessible through QR codes posted in various parks and sites in the city. A final note: As a living document, this guide is a work in progress and will benefit from future corrections and revisions. We tried to identify Native artists by tribal affiliation, but it should be kept in mind that Native identity is a complex kaleidoscope that Euroamericans attempted to simplify and reduce. -

MEARES ISLAND CULTURAL CENTRE HALL – CLOSED www.tla-o-qui-aht.org FOR RENOVATIONS AS OF MONDAY JAN 16TH-2017 Tla-o-qui-aht ‘s Meares Island Cultural Centre HALL will be closed as of Monday January 16th-2017 for renovations to begin. The other areas of the upstairs, and some of the downstairs will remain open for staff to work. However due to the repairs needed on the front side (facing the ocean) the Meares Island Preschool will be relocated temporarily to the Opitsaht Health Clinic for at least 2 – 3 months. We are pleased to inform that Tla-o-qui-aht was successful in acquiring a grant for these important upgrades. As we undergo this planning, the Opitsaht Fitness Facilities will likely change as well, once we know the renovation plans, we will inform the members on access of the fitness facility as well. By the late 1970's the Indian art market had become a several million dollar industry, involving several hundred native artists, and supported by a primarily non-Indian consumer public. This thesis examines the contemporary Northwest Coast Indian art market in terms of the role and significance of the art within its contemporary social context, focusing on the relationship between the consumers and the art they collect.
