The building’s was designed in accordance with a number of guiding principles, including: the need for optimal conditions and infrastructure for complex creative processes; environmental concerns; providing access to the spectacular views of Haifa Bay and north towards Mount Hermon in the Golan Heights; and use of industrial finishings for the design. Construction took three years. Three University departments conduct their classes at the Hecht Arts Center: Fine Arts, Music and Theatre. The Graduate School for Creative Arts Therapies is also located at the Center. Fine Arts – B.A. and M.A. studies in sketching, drawing, sculpting, printing, photography, video, and ceramics. The courses combine workshop hours, theory studies, and exhibitions. Every student is given personal attention and a supportive environment, enabling him or her to create and acquire contemporary knowledge in the various artistic disciplines. Music – B.A. studies in musical proficiency (harmony, counterpoint, auditory training); music history; ethnomusicology; classical Arabic music; jazz; composition; electronic music; working in a digital studio; Israeli music; and ethnic Israeli music. The department has a number of active ensembles and a choir. Theatre – B.A. studies in acting, stage management, socio-drama therapy, theory studies, and medical clowning. The Department of Theatre combines a high standard of professional training while teaching the historical, cultural and socio-political contexts of theatre in Israel and around the world.

    THE BIRTH OF THE PALESTINIAN REFUGEE PROBLEM REVISITED Benny Morris’ The Birth of the Palestinian Refugee Problem, 1947–1949, was first published in 1988. Its startling reve- lations about how and why 700,000 Palestinians left their homes and became refugees during the Arab–Israeli war in 1948 undermined the conflicting Zionist and Arab interpreta- tions; the former suggesting that the Palestinians had left voluntarily, and the latter that this was a planned expulsion. The book subsequently became a classic in the field of Middle East history. The Birth of the Palestinian Refugee Problem Revisited represents a thoroughly revised edition of the earlier work, compiled on the basis of newly opened Israeli military archives and intelligence documentation. While the focus of the book remains the 1948 war and the analysis of the Palestinian exodus, the new material con- tains more information about what actually happened in Jerusalem, Jaffa and Haifa, and how events there eventually led to the collapse of Palestinian urban society. It also sheds light on the battles, expulsions and atrocities that resulted in the disintegration of the rural communities. The story is a harrowing one. The refugees now number some four million and their existence remains one of the major obstacles to peace in the Middle East. Benny Morris is Professor of History in the Middle East Studies Department, Ben-Gurion University.He is an outspo- ken commentator on the Arab–Israeli conflict, and is one of Israel’s premier revisionist historians. His publications include Righteous Victims: A History of the Zionist–Arab Conflict, 1881–2001 (2001), and Israel’s Border Wars, 1949–56 (1997).

    2018 ANNUAL REPORT 2017–18 SUMMARY FROM MERYL K. AINSMAN & JEFFREY H. FINKELSTEIN Message From the Chair and CEO Jewish tradition reveres learning. Yet, in Pirkei Avot, Ethics of the Fathers, we read, “The essential thing is not study, but deed.” The message, of course, is that study should drive action. Knowledge must come first, to provide the tools and insights needed to set directions for the future. This view prompted the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh to undertake its 2017 Jewish Community Study, funded by the Federation’s Jewish Community Foundation. The data told us that our community has grown, that needs have changed and that people are seeking new ways to be part of Jewish life in Pittsburgh. With this understanding, we have embarked on the “deeds.” We’ve expanded our work in diversity and inclusion, working to make ours a welcoming community for all. We are advocating on the local and national levels for the rights of people with disabilities, and we conferred with an LGBTQ+ advisory group. We are partnering with other organizations to fight discrimination. We are boldly addressing security needs in our community and its institutions. In 2017–18, through our Community Security Program, some 4,000 Jewish communal workers learned about threat assessment and completed active-shooter training. Meanwhile, we work in tandem with law enforcement, school officials and others who help keep our community safe. Our Community Study has inspired new directions in programming, with Jewish learning and engagement at the core. To increase Jewish enrollment in Jewish early childhood education programs, we offered marketing assistance and assessment, training, and expertise to Jewish preschools.
