  • In the Time It Has Taken James Halliday to Compile His 26 Australian Wine
In the time it has taken James Halliday to compile his 26 Australian Wine Companions, the Chardonnay grape has emigrated to almost every hill and vale across our viticultural landscape. No other variety has adapted more successfully, from single barrel selections to vast commercial blends. No other inspires such singular focus in our winemakers to sharpen their craft. No other sends vignerons searching, with gold fever, for that next hill, or clone, or aspect. Chardonnay alone explores the breadth and personality of all Australian wine regions. In our tribute to James Halliday, the true patron of fine Australian wine, no other variety would do for this national wine competition. Organised by Wine Yarra Valley, the objective of the James Halliday Chardonnay Challenge is to affirm the quality of Australian Chardonnay and provide a catalyst for people to take a fresh look at this much-loved wine by providing an appropriate platform for the national search to recognize Australia’s finest chardonnay. A Welcome from the Committee Australian chardonnay has never been better. It is a great news story and one about which we should all be proud and excited. The level of support for the inaugural James Halliday Chardonnay Challenge has been overwhelming and we thank all of the exhibitors for getting behind it so enthusiastically. We thank James for his guidance and support in the design and execution of the competition and agreeing to be our patron. We were very lucky to be able to secure one of the most dynamic and talented groups of judges in Australia, literally from coast-to-coast, and thank them for volunteering their time, expertise and camaraderie.

  • Bob Campbell MW
THE ANDRÉ L SIMON LECTURE 2019 Presented by Bob Campbell MW on Sunday 10th March in the Stamford Plaza Hotel, Auckland, New Zealand “Development of New Zealand Wine Industry 1954, when the Auckland branch was formed, to present day” THEN (1954) In 1957 New Zealand produced 2.7 million litres of wine, 85% of which was fortified – today production is more than 100 times that volume. Back then it was difficult to enjoy wine with a restaurant meal. Michael Cooper said ‘The custom was to smuggle in a bottle and hide it under the table. Some restaurants took the wine away and decanted it into soft-drink bottles in case of a police raid.’ I recall enjoying a 15-year-old Penfolds St Henri Claret in coffee mugs! The breweries had control over wine sales and the hotel restaurants, to keep their liquor license, were obliged to serve food, but the restaurants had to be closed by 8 o’clock, and many closed as early as 6pm - these were dark times. I can remember I worked for a brief time in a wine bar in London doing my Overseas Experience (OE) when a very elegant English gentlemen customer and I began chatting away, and he asked me if I was a New Zealander and I said yes. I asked ‘Have you been to New Zealand?’ and he said, ‘Oh yes, only once. Not a happy experience actually.’ He then explained he was on the way to Australia, and had a stopover in Christchurch, and he had asked for an early morning call so he could meet his flight.

  • Some Wine Tasting and Food Pairing Suggestions
WORSHIPFUL COMPANY OF MANAGEMENT CONSULTANTS Virtual Wine Tasting – 12th June 2020 New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc background notes and suggestions for food pairing with thanks to Patrick McHugh and Ann Chapman © June 2020 WCoMC Wine Club Page 1 A bit of background No history of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc wines is complete without understanding the importance of Marlborough and the role of Montana Wines. Montana Wines remains New Zealand’s largest wine producer and is the brand under which the UK was introduced to New Zealand wine during the 1980s. The winery has been so significant throughout New Zealand’s wine history that the Montana name is still used on domestic labelling due to its strong brand recognition. Ivan Yukich (Jukić), a Croatian immigrant planted his first vines in 1934, in Titirangi, situated in the Waitākere Ranges west of Auckland. The first wine was sold in 1944; by 1960 ten hectares (25 acres) of vineyards were planted. Ivan's sons, Mate and Frank, had become involved and they set up the company Montana Wines in 1961. By the end of the 1960s, the company had expanded further, planting vines on land south of Auckland. In 1973, the company expanded into Gisborne and Marlborough and exported its first wines in 1980. Montana was listed on the New Zealand Stock Exchange, initially as ‘Corporate Investments Limited’, and then as Montana Wines. Marlborough is located in the northeast of the South Island. The climate has a strong contrast between hot sunny days and cool nights, which extends the ripening period of the vines. This results in more intense flavour and aroma characters in the wine.
