In 1970, Jay and Barbara Fritz wanted to escape the foggy summers of and had purchased a one hundred acre plus property on a hillside location now known as the Fritz Vineyard and winery. Clayton Fritz, whom had spent his childhood summers there, is the current president of the operation. The property boasts a unique energy efficient 3- tiered subterranean winery which enables wines to be made with the old-world technique of a gravity flow production system.

The Héroe (Air-o-way, Spanish for hero) label offered by Sculpterra honors not only the vineyard workers of our family winery but pays respect to the unsung heroes of the wine industry throughout the region and beyond – the real heroes, the workers. The Héroe label currently consists of a , Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Primitivo. Héroe wines are designed to be fruit forward and easy drinking, a great wine for any occasion. All the grapes are hand-picked from the estate vineyard and produced with just a touch of oak influence. Hollywood screen writer Robert Kamen considers himself an “accidental” success. In 1980, he found inspiration in 280 acres on the southwestern slopes of the Mayacomas Mountains in Sonoma. With a check from his first screen play, Robert made a commitment to the very special property. Viticulturist Phil Coturri was introduced to the project and shared Roberts’s philosophy on preserving the wilderness of the site and implementing as little intervention as possible. Celebrated winemaker Mark Harold makes some of the most stunning wines from this property.

As a small, family-owned winery we live our lives amidst the vines. Our vineyard and the rhythms of the season are constant reminders that the soil, the air, the water and the vines are the essence of the wines we craft. We’ve always said that great fruit is the real star of our winemaking team. So we let the grapes take center stage, patiently nurturing the vines to produce fruit with intense, ripe and balanced flavors. Then we let time, traditional winemaking techniques and good French oak work their magic.

In 1972 Ken Laird found a prune orchard in northern Napa Valley that he was able to convert to grape vines with the help of Robert Mondavi. This 70-acre vineyard was his first successful planting. Thirty years later the Laird family has become the biggest grape grower in Napa Valley. You have tasted Lairds fruit in other winery crafted wines. In addition to being one of the biggest grape growers, the Laird Family Estate is also a custom crush facility which houses many boutique wine makers. The Laird Family wines are made from the top 1% of their favorite fruit.

The family plantings are all located on the West side of the Lodi’s Mokelumne River AVA that consist of 9 blocks and totaling 330 planted acres. Maley Brothers is a small, handcraft, grower’s label, originally founded by brothers Joe and Louis Maley. Today, Joe’s son, Todd Maley, does all the farming and works with winemaker Chad Joseph on the production of Maley Brothers wines. Not atypical of Lodi’s numerous grower-turned-winemakers, less than 1% of the wine grapes farmed in Maley Vineyards goes into their own wines (the rest to numerous producers based in and outside of Lodi). Also typical of Lodi growers and producers, the Maleys trace their farming roots in Lodi as far back as 1863.

Mithra the Sun God, the uncreated creator was the dominate religion of the Roman Empire pre-Christianity. The religion found its origin in Persia from 5,000 years past and did not discriminate against race or position as senators and farmers, alike, would become members. The theme was simple; it was immortality to become one with Mithra. To gain knowledge of the heavens and to be reborn again. To be reborn. Of course, nothing has changed. The story and the wine are about the same. Continuity. The fruit from the wines are from Mt. Veeder and are gorgeous representations of the region.

After more than 3 decades at The Ojai Vineyard, what keeps me motivated and excited about running a winery is the craft. The slow process of assessing the outcome of choices made with experience and intuition is what it’s all about—and using that knowledge to make wines that fit a harmonious vision. Keeping the place small, and keeping my hands in the winemaking has allowed me to stay focused on craft.

The highly distinguished Bambury Wine Collection captures this essence in three lines of wines, each with its own distinguishing character: at its heart is the world-class namesake Bonneau line of wine, which every year continues to honor the family’s pioneering roots, joined by Egret wines dedicated to saving the environment, and the extremely limited release Opal Moon. The name Opal Moon refers to October’s birthstone in honor of the fall harvest season and birth of the newest wine vintage. During this time, some of the best wines start with grapes harvested under the soft light of the moon.

Ted is a 1999 UC Davis Grad and started Prime in 2005. With nearly a century of combined farming experience in Monterey County, Tondre Alarid and his son Joe planted 6 ½ acres of Pinot Noir in the Santa Lucia Highland appellation because they loved red wine. That initial planting has now grown to over 100 acres with several clones of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Syrah and Riesling fruit. The limited production, award winning Tondre Wines reflect the exceptional which allows extended fruit “hang time”; more sunlight and even ripening. This results in fruit with intense flavor and distinctive flavor profiles. They recently received the “Sustainability in Practice” (SIP) certification which reflects their commitment to the land for future generations.

Our philosophy is simple: We believe great wine is established in the vineyard. We meticulously farm our estate Zotovich Family Vineyard grapes, and strive to make the best wine possible vintage to vintage. A small, family-owned and operated winery located on the Central Coast of California, Zotovich Vineyards handcrafts exceptional wine from small, closely monitored lots of grapes. Vineyard health is of the utmost importance to our family.

From bud-break through bottle, we closely monitor the health of our maturing vines, grapes, and wine as it ferments and ages in our temperature controlled cellar. We pay painstaking attention to quality in both the vineyard and the cellar. If you are ever in Lompoc, please stop into our tasting room located at the Santa Rita Hills Wine Center. We invite you to sign up for our mailing list to keep current with new releases and events in your area.

Ambassador was founded on the simple belief that no other experience is quite as enchanting as drinking wine. We know that something magical happens when you drink wine with friends; good wine becomes great wine and good friends become better friends. This was the case with our founding partners. R&R WINE MARKETING INC. Wines from New Zealand

Husband and winemaker Simon Barker and his viticulturist wife Vanessa Barker create wine that is a reflection of the Blind River terroir located in Marlborough, New Zealand. Rather than trying to copy something that is from somewhere else, they want to represent something that adds texture along with balanced intensity from their home. Handling their fruit carefully and with minimal intervention the result of their wines are of high quality with unique flavor profile- wines with crispness and minerality. The location of the vineyard sits a half a mile away from the sea that gives the soil moisture and winds that cool the temperatures during the summer seasons. These characteristics help develop the intensity of the wine’s aromas and flavors.

The estate was bought 20 years ago by Amabile Drocco. He immediately updated the estate by building a modern underground cellar, introducing a new barrel system and more than doubling the size of the vineyards. Drocco’s father was a vine grower in a small village not far from Barolo. Drocco himself chose to study mechanics in Torino after World War II, because of a weak Italian economy. Once he returned to Alba, he started the Sancassiano Bakery Equipment Company. Dracco led this company to great success and was finally able to return to his viticulture roots and purchase Cascina Adelaide.

CIABOT BERTON PIEDMONT, ITALY

THE FULL BODIED RED WINES FROM CIABOT BERTON ARE CRAFTED WTH GRAPES GROWN WITH RESPECT TO THE ECOSYSTEM OF THE VINE AND THE EXPRESSION OF THE LAND OF LANGHE.

All of the vineyards are located in the prestigious historic cru of La Morra, on the slopes facing towards Alba: Roggeri, San Biagio, Rive, Cappallotti, Pria and Rocchettevino. On a land register for La Morra there are references to the Germanic surname of Obertus. The Oberto family can claim to have early origins reaching as far back as 1200. In more recent times other testimonies underline the close bond with the territory of La Morra, with specific references even to the cultivation of vines from 1800 onwards. By the end of the 1950s, Luigi Oberto, along with his father Giovenale, was cultivating the 2 hectares of Nebbiolo on the hill of Bricco San Biagio, and selling the grapes at the Alba market.

From the 1990s, Luigi’s children Marco, an oenologist, and Paola, an agronomist, began working with him. Increasingly aware of the quality and full potential of the vineyards and their Nebbiolo grapes, they decided to vinify the grapes of the different vineyards separately, selecting the best batches of Barolo for bottling. In this way, by making a few important adjustments in production to add to Luigi’s great experience, the wines of Ciabot Berton have become steadily more widely known and appreciated.

CONTUCCI TUSCANY, ITALY THE CONTUCCI FAMILY IS ONE OF THE OLDEST IN ITALY DATING BACK TO THE XI CENTURY.

Prior to the Renaissance, the Contucci family started cultivating vines and still continues today to make Montepulciano’s wine famous throughout the world. The farm area extends over 170 hectacres of which 22 are cultivated vineyards. The vineyard consists of only native vines grown by the Spurred Cordon techniques with a density of 4,000-5,000 plants per hectacre.

The agronomic techniques are carried out with the maximum respect for the environment with the fertilization and thinning out of the bunches done according to necessity. Harvest is done manually in various stages for the selection of the bunches. In the historic cellars dating from the XIII century, all Contucci wines are aged in French and Slovanian oak barrels between 800 and 2,500 liters. Around 100,000 bottles are produced each year.

BONFILS  BORDEAUX, FRANCE ORIGINALLY FROM ALSACE, THE BONFILS FAMILY WAS FORCED TO LEAVE THEIR REGION BECAUSE OF THE WAR OF 1870.

In 1968, Jean-Michel Bonfils began by investing in a domain of 6 hectares near Beziers: Domaine du Lirou. He acquired new domains little by little as the opportunity arose. In this way, he progressively built up his portfolio of properties and, from 2007, added chateaux in Bordeaux. With each new acquisition, Jean-Michel Bonfils replanted quality vines to optimize the quality of his wines. At the same time, the equipment in the wineries and the bottling lines were maintained to control the whole process of wine production.

Chateau La Rose Belair comprises 40 hectares of vines situated at Mouliets-et-Villemartin, near Saint-Emilion, in the department of the Gironde. The vineyard enjoys a particularly favorable dominant exposition and rich geological diversity, with soils ranging from limestone, clay, marl, and gravel to flint. The grape varieties are principally Merlot, which covers practically two-thirds of the vineyard, with some Cabernet Sauvignon and .

COEUR DE ROSÈ PROVENÇE, FRANCE FOUNDED BY CHILDHOOD FRIENDS CHRISTOPHE VIALETTE AND MORGAN ROAIL FROM THEIR PASSION TO SHARE THEIR LOVE FOR WINE AND THE FRENCH RIVIERA.

For Christophe and Morgan, the gathering of friends and family for sharing drinks (aperitifs) and meals was ingrained in them. It is a way of life in the South of France and quality Provençal rosé wine is a big part of this culture. After spending more and more time in the United States, Christophe and Morgan noticed that outside of New York City and some other big metropolitan areas, good Provençal rosés and other wines from their region were hard to come by. When available, the collection would usually be limited.

Thus, one of the first goals for the team was to produce a line of quality rosés from Provençe and introduce them to the USA and other parts of the world.

With 25 years of experience, Luís has been responsible for the successful projects of Herdade do Esporão and most recently Herdade dos Grous. One of Portugal’s most recognized vignerons, Luís is the only winemaker to have been awarded Winemaker of the Year 2 times in both 1997 and 2007. OMBU  SAN RAFAEL, ARGENTINA

AUTHENTIC AND EXCITING NEW LINE OF WINES FROM ARGENTINA, THE OMBU WINES ARE HAND CRAFTED BY THE FOURTH GENERATION WINEMAKING FAMILY OF BODEGA ROCA.

From Italian and Spanish ancestors, Alejandro Roca has taken the helm as winemaker and carries on the family tradition of making honest, high quality, wines. With 114 hectacres dating back 85 years, the Bodega Roca vineyards are at 2,300 ft. above sea level in the premier winegrowing region within the province of Mendoza. San Rafael is the southern oasis of Mendoza: a high desert oasis with low rainfall, intense sun and mild nights. All this contributes to the slow maturing of grapes and results in well-balanced and complex fruit.

The Ombu tree, a cultural symbol of the Argentine gaucho, is distinguishable from afar as it provides comfort and shelter from sun and rain. Like the tree, Ombu wines are representative of a rich heritage of winemaking tradition and the appreciation of finding comfort with friends, family and a great glass of wine. Enjoy!

PRODIGAL  STA RITA HILLS AVA, CALIFORNIA FROM THE 1ST GRADUATING GLASS AT UC DAVIS, STEVE RUSSELL EMBARKED ON A LIFELONG JOURNEY THAT BROUGHT HIM BACK TO CALIFORNIA TO FOUND PRODIGAL WINES.

The name “Prodigal” stems from the career paths that Stephen Russell has taken. As an early (1960) graduate of the UC Davis Enology program, Steve was the first formally-trained enologist to be hired by the Gallo's. After discovering that corporate winemaking didn’t offer the future he had envisioned, and after attempting unsuccessfully to raise the money to purchase Freemark Abbey, with a twenty-something’s wisdom he decided to leave the industry. After returning to school (DVM and PhD) and an academic career in cancer research, he and his wife, Mary, returned to California to found Quinta Santa Rosa Vineyard / Prodigal Wines in 2001. The ‘prodigal son’ had returned!

Steeply sloping Quinta Santa Rosa Vineyard is located on Santa Rosa Road in the southeastern corner of the Sta. Rita Hills appellation. Its four acres are solely planted to Pinot Noir – the eastern bloc contains Dijon clones 667 (on 3309) and 777 (on 5C) in equal amounts, while the western block consists of clone 115.

Armitage Brandon Armitage makes compelling Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in the Santa Cruz Mountains. The winery and the Heart O the Mountain estate vineyard are on a high-elevation hillside with views of the Pacific Ocean. This beautiful estate has a rich history dating back to 1881, and was once owned by director Alfred Hitchcock. Brandon was originally a horticulturist working in Oregon, and he has made wine in the Willamette Valley, Central Otago, New Zealand, and Colorado. He has been making wines in the Santa Cruz Mountains since 2006.

Buccella Buccella (pronounced “boo-kehl-lah”) is the Latin term for “mouthful,” meant to signify the big, bold concentration of layers. The proprietary handmade wax label is an interpretation of a sommelier’s tastevin, designed to hold the perfect mouthful.

Since its founding in 2002, Buccella has remained unwaveringly committed to producing limited quantities of handmade, luxury wines produced from small vineyards in Napa Valley, primarily in Yountville, Oakville and Coombsville. Cenay Gerry Rowland launched the Cenay label in 1997, and today it showcases excellent varietal wines, each a perfect marriage of site and grape variety. This is truly a family-run business, as the entire staff consists of just Gerry and his wife, Linda. Producing wine in Napa Valley, the Rowlands truly stand out against the backdrop of luxury wineries owned or backed by tech entrepreneurs, or sports and Hollywood celebrities. The Cenay wines are made with care, from well chosen vineyards, by people who love good wine.

The Cabernet Sauvignon comes primarily from the Blue Tooth vineyard on the edge of the Oak Knoll AVA, directly across from Darioush. The wine was fermented with 100% wild yeast, which adds to the depth of character, and aged in 100% French oak, 70% new.

Complant Complant produces rock star wines from the father-son team of Daniel and Sam Baron. Daniel started at Chateau Montelena in 1973 and then moved on to study with Dr. Harold Olmo at UC Davis. In 1981, he left California for France, and spent a year at Chateau Petrus. This association with Christian Moueix, then owner of Petrus, led him back to California and resulted in a twelve-year stint at Dominus, eventually as GM. In 1994 he became the winemaker at Silver Oak Cellars, where he remained for twenty-three vintages, along with helping found Twomey Cellars. His son Sam received his degree in Viticulture and Enology from UC Davis in 2012, and has done internships in Napa Valley, Burgundy and New Zealand. Sam’s day job is making wine for one of Northern California’s most forward-thinking wineries – but Complant represents his passion and an opportunity to work with his lifelong mentor.

The Barons’ skill with wines of restraint and elegance is evident in these four bottlings. The Pomme-en-Main Rose ́ is from organically grown Zinfandel grapes from Benguerel Family Vineyard in the heart of Kenwood, in Sonoma Valley. Chardonnay is from Steve Matthiasson’s organically farmed Linda Vista Vineyard in Napa. Grapes are fermented on their natural yeast and aged on lees for six months before bottling without filtration. The Soberanes Vineyard Pinot Noir is from eight rows of vines planted with the Pisoni clone on a bench adjacent to the renowned Garys’ Vineyard. The wine is fermented with natural yeast and aged in neutral burgundy barrels for one year. The Beller Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon comes from the top of Mt. Veeder and is a co-ferment of Cabernet Sauvignon (86%) and Petit Verdot (14%). The wine is aged in thin- staved Bordeaux barrels (22% new), with racking through the heads every three months. This is a labor intensive method that Daniel learned working in Bordeaux, and it has a magical effect on the wine. High toned aromatics are preserved, while the tannins are integrated into the fabric of the wine.

Dono dal Cielo This family estate is one of the trailblazing wineries in the Sierra Foothills. Somewhat off the beaten path, in the rolling, oak studded hills of Placer County, Bill and Karen McGillivray planted their vineyard in 2002. Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, and later, Viognier were a natural match for the sunny, windswept terrain. Here, in the northern foothills of the Sierra Nevadas, the McGillivrays found that perfect balance of earth, sun and soil and set out to make wines that show off the this underknown region. The climate is Mediterranean, with warm days and nights cooler than the valley below. Annual rainfall averages 30 to 40 inches, most of it falling in the winter and spring. This encourages dry-farming, and the McGillivrays have begun converting their vineyard.

Dono dal Cielo’s wines have pure flavors and show a light touch with oak. The Petite Sirah and the Zinfandels are less rustic than some of the North Coast wines from these varieties. Two clones of Zinfandel are planted, the Deaver clone, which can be traced to the original Zinfandel vines planted in the Sierra Foothills in the 1800s, and the Rockpile clone, an ancient clone originally identified in St. Peter’s church in Cloverdale, planted at Dono dal Cielo on St. George rootstock. The Viognier is balanced and fresh and shows the typical honeysuckle and peach notes of this variety at its best. All wines are grown on the estate.

McCay Cellars McCay Cellars makes wines that express the character of the distinctive vineyards they work with. Michael McCay and his family have farmed in the Lodi AVA for 25 years, and began producing wine as McCay Cellars in 2007. Believing that the Lodi area has the perfect climate for Zinfandel and Rhone varietals, Michael’s winemaking approach is “hands on” in the vineyard, and “hands off” in the winery. All wines are fermented using native yeasts with no inoculation, and the influence of new oak is kept to a minimum. Michael has been recognized as a “winemaker to watch” by the San Francisco Chronicle, and has had wines on the Chronicle’s Top 100 list three different years.

In addition to McCay’s estate vineyard, Lot 13, which includes vines planted in 1913, Michael uses grapes from some of the most sought-after and highly regarded vineyards in the region. This includes the 10-acre Rous vineyard, planted to Zinfandel in 1909 on St George rootstock, and the 132 year-old Bechthold Vineyard, planted in 1886! All wines are made as naturally as possible and are certified Lodi Rules.

Oceans Churning Oceans Churning is the passion project of Raj Iyer, who’s first (wine) love was Grand Cru Chablis. Raj had been looking for the right opportunity to make classic, intense Chardonnay in California and in 2014 the opportunity arose when he began working with fruit from two exceptional sites in Sonoma County. The spectacular El Novillero Vineyard is nestled in the foothills of the historic Donnell Ranch near the meeting of the Sonoma Valley and Carneros AVAs. A portion of this rock-strewn, marine sediment-based soil is planted to Clone 4, a true California heritage clone. A few miles away, the Green Acres Hills vineyard is a few miles south, was planted in 1969 by the Sangiacomo family to the original Old Wente clone (cuttings supposedly smuggled in from Meursault!) and yields from the original old-vine block – where the fruit for Oceans Churning is grown – seldom rise above two tons per acre.

Raj harvests grapes from these exceptional plots at night to ensure cool, pristine fruit arrives at the winery, and he seldom makes more than a few barrels of each wine. Best of all, and perhaps an implicit nod to the Burgundian inspiration for these wines, these are among the rare California Chardonnays that develop beautifully in bottle. Intense and balanced on release, time in bottle brings out savory, earthy characteristics to complement the green apple, pear and floral notes that are hallmarks of Sonoma Chardonnay. Ramspeck The Ramspeck name dates back to the 16th century, when wine featuring the family crest was sold in Europe. Winemaker Gerry Rowland, a descendent of the Ramspecks, revived the label in 1991. Gerry learned his craft in his native Barossa Valley, Australia, and later in California at Stag’s Leap Winery and Chappellet, where he was assistant winemaker for 8 years. He has also made Pinot Noir in New Zealand’s Central Otago region.

Ramspeck’s red wines are made from prime Napa Valley vineyards, with minimal intervention including 100% wild yeast fermentation, and aged in primarily second use oak barrels. The finished wines are classic examples of these wine styles, well balanced and easy to drink. The fruit-driven Pinot Grigio is primarily from grapes grown in Dry Creek Valley, aged in tank sur lie for seven months, balanced by bright acidity and made to be a crowd-pleaser. Strala Stråla Vineyards is run by Laura and Jason Ray. A successful vineyard manager, Jason has been growing grapes in Napa Valley since 2005, and counts among his clients such demanding winemakers as Philippe Melka and Thomas Rivers Brown. With his broad experience throughout Napa Valley, Jason knows that sometimes the best fruit is from vineyards that are still “below the radar.” He grows 100% of the grapes used for Stråla. Each wine is a perfect match of site, grape variety and wine style. Laura’s career path has included working for a premium cooperage company, and took a dramatic turn toward wine when she won a blind tasting at the Culinary Institute of America at Greystone against master sommeliers. She and Jason got together in 2013 and started Stråla – (roughly) Swedish for “Ray,” their last name – in 2014.

Jason works closely with winemaker Massimo Monticelli, who has made wine at Silver Oak, B.Wise, and Caldwell, to craft a set of spot-on Napa Valley wines. The Blanc de Blancs is 100% Chardonnay, from a cool vineyard in the southern part of the valley, and is aged on its lees for 24 months before disgorgement. The Sauvignon Blanc is bright with just a hint of cream and tropical notes. After a three day cold soak, Pinot Noir is 100% whole berry fermented, with no added yeast, then aged for 18 months in 40% new French oak. Stråla’s Proprietary Red Wine is a silky, rich blend that should be a crowd-pleaser. And the flagship Cabernet Sauvignon is a deeply colored, balanced but easy-going wine – everything people love about Napa Cabernet.

Le Vigne The Filippini family history in the Paso Robles area began in the early 1960’s when winery owner, Sylvia Filippini’s, family purchased the property where Le Vigne winery now stands. Sylvia and Walter Filippini run the winery today. Early on, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon were planted to supplement the growing demand of other wine growing regions like Napa and Sonoma. As the vines matured, growers and winemakers began to see real potential for the area with its unique soils, climate and coastal influence.

The grapes grown on the estate were highly regarded by local producers and always in demand. Recognizing the quality, the family began making wine with grapes from the property beginning in 1989. Then they built a state of the art winery in 1995 and developed additional vineyards in 1998. They expanded the wineries varieties to include: Merlot, Syrah, Sangiovese and Cabernet Franc in addition to the original plantings of Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. Soils are clay-loam, with typical sunny growing conditions offset by cooling winds coming through the Templeton Gap.

David Hill David Hill Vineyards and Winery is home to the Willamette Valley’s oldest Pinot Noir vines. Wines produced from vineyards in this area were celebrated as far back as the 19th century, even earning a gold medal at the St. Louis World’s Fair in 1904. During Prohibition the original grapevines were removed but in 1965 Charles Coury, a recent graduate of UC Davis, came to Northern Oregon and planted what are now David Hill’s oldest vines, some from root stock he brought back from Alsace and Burgundy. A modern-day pioneer, Coury was followed to the Willamette Valley by David Lett of Eyrie Vineyards in 1966 and Dick Erath in 1968.

In 1965 the estate was known as Charles Coury Vineyards. Today, David Hill is named for the Frederick David Family that once lived on the property. The hilly area was originally known as David’s Hill and prior to that, Wine Hill. The first David Hill-labeled wines were from the 2000 vintage. The vision for David Hill revolves around a passion for excellent wine, a stewardship of these historic vines, and the legacy of place.

Reunion Reunion is a joint venture between Gerald Wieder and Gerhard Kracher, who together are producing terrific red wines from Mittelburgenland, near the border with Hungary. Gerald Weider is the cellar master at the well-known (locally in the region, at least) Winzerkeller Neckenmarkt, which specializes in Blaufränkisch. Gerhard Kracher runs Weingut Kracher, known internationally for their off-the-charts dessert wines, and increasingly for table wines. Gerhard’s father, Alois Kracher, helped Gerald Weider modernize the Winzerkeller Neckenmarkt vineyards and winery in the early 2000s, and Reunion is a commemoration of that.

With Reunion, Gerald and Gerhard are focused on making wine from the major red grape of Austria, Blaufränkisch (sorry, ), the top growing region for which is Burgenland. Blaufränkish goes by different names in different countries (Lemberger in Germany, Franconia in Italy, for instance) and can produce quite elegant wines, as evidenced here. The Blaufränkisch “Passion” is from a mixture of low-lying and hillside plots in the terrific Hochberg vineyard; it is fermented in stainless steel and aged for 12 months in a mixture of stainless and second-use barriques .

Schwarz The Schwarz family has owned vineyards for generations, selling their grapes to the local cooperative winery. Hans Schwarz is a master butcher by trade, and in 1992, he made his first “hobby” wine and presented it to his friend Alois Kracher of the famed Weinlaubenhof Kracher. Alois was so impressed with the quality of Hans’ grapes, he convinced him to make his own wine. With help from Kracher, as well as Manfred Krankl of Sine Qua Non fame – the “Mr K’s” – Hans produced his first commercial vintage in 1999. Krankl and Alois’ son, Gerhard, continue to collaborate with him on these distinctive wines.

Schwarz has 12 ha (30 acres) in Seewinkel in Burgenland along the eastern shore of Lake Neusiedl. The climate is hot, with dry summers cooled by the evening fog from the Lake. Potzinger winery is in Gabersdorf, just across the river Mur from Leibnitz, and the wines come from distinct vineyards throughout southern Styria. Potzinger’s wines are benchmarks for the region.

The Sauvignon Blanc from the Czamillionberg vineyard is exotic and slightly smoky. The wine from the terrific Steinriegel vineyard is elegant, with notes of citrus and pineapple. Clos de la Cure Centuries ago it was common that churches had their own vineyards and the priests would keep the best plots for themselves. This small 6.5 ha (16 acres) clos, or walled vineyard, is located behind the Church of Saint Christophe des Bardes, next to the cure (the rectory or priest's home). The estate is owned and managed by Alexia and Pierre Bouyer, who are also the proprietors of nearby Château Milon, as well as the tiny Clos 56 in Pomerol.

Domaine d’Ardhuy The Domaine D’Ardhuy estate and its monopole Clos des Langres vineyard are located at the southernmost limit of the Côte de Nuits. The estate is run by Mireille d’Ardhuy-Santiard, who, along with winemaker Carel Voorhuis, makes wine from six Grand Crus and fifteen Premier Crus, including the white Ladoix 1er Cru Le Rognet, which vineyard abuts Corton-Charlemagne. It is said that if this parcel had been planted to Chardonnay, rather than Pinot Noir, when the AOC was classified in 1937 it would be part of that famous Grand Cru appellation today.

Their flagship Clos des Langres bottling comes from a three hectare walled vineyard first planed by the monks of Cluny in the 10th century. Their estate’s driveway leads to a very pretty nineteenth century house with vines bordered by small fruit trees. The location is Corgoloin, the house and grounds are in the Côte de Nuits but just the other side of their ‘Clos’ wall is the Côte de Beaune.

From this ideal location, the strength and focus of the estate is on the Côte de Beaune, with outstanding holdings in Corton, Ladoix, and Savigny. The domaine’s vineyards throughout the Côte D’Or are the heritage of Mireille’s father Gabriel who founded the estate in 1947. Domaine d’Ardhuy’s wines have been produced biodynamically since 2009, and are bottled unfiltered and unfined.

Domaine Cady Located just southwest of Angers, on the opposite side of the Loire river, Domaine Cady was founded in 1927 and is now run by by Philippe and Sylvie Cady with their son, fourth-generation Alex, making the wines. The south facing vineyard is in the heart of the Coteaux du Layon AOP. Soils are a mix of schist and quartz with the majority of the vineyard planted to Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Franc.

Grapes are picked by hand in three or more passes through the vineyards to insure grapes are brought in at optimum concentration and ripeness. Vinification is in temperature-controlled glass-lined underground vats, with a long maturation on the lees, resulting in wines with a lovely, almost delicate balance of power and fruit. Certified Organic since 2007, Domaine Cady’s wines are never chapitalized. FORMAT CASE BOTTLE 3 CASE 5 CASE Anjou Blanc 2018 12 x 750 $144 $12.00 $138 $132 100% Chenin Blanc

Domaine Bruno Cormerais The modern story of Muscadet in some ways mirrors the recent revival of . Both were “bistro” wines that fell victim to their own success in the 1970s and 1980s, when quantity mattered more than quality. But both regions are now home to some of the most adventurous producers in France, who, in different ways, are making serious high-quality wines that offer an affordable alternative to the increasingly pricey wines of, say, the Cote d’Or or Sancerre.

Domaine Bruno Cormerais is located in Clisson, perhaps the top subregion of Muscadet, where the profoundly granitic soils are some of the oldest in France. His wines capture the diversity and potential of this region. The younger vine bottlings are aged six to nine months on the lees, and the top wines, from vineyards up to seventy years and old rooted deep in the granite bedrock, are aged on the lees two to four years or more(!). Bruno Cormerais’ wines are among those leading the way to a new appreciation of Muscadet: wines that are rich without being fat, piercingly mineral and savory, with remarkable longevity in bottle.

Domaine des Forges Founded in 1890, Domaine des Forges is now is in the hands of fifth-generation Stephane and Severine Branchereau. With a focus on single-vineyard Savennières, more than half of their vineyards are planted to Chenin Blanc. Their wines capture the best characteristics of the grape variety: satisfyingly weighty texture as well as a lightness that comes from the grape’s naturally high acidity – weighty yet light, the beautiful paradox of Chenin Blanc. The Branchereaus use indigenous yeasts for fermentation and practice sustainable wine growing throughout their relatively low-yielding vineyards. The Savennieres go through partial malolactic fermentation and are aged on the lees for up to eleven months before bottling.

Mas des Volques The Souchon family has been growing grapes in the Southern Rhone Valley for over 80 years, always selling the fruit to local wineries. In 2010 fourth-generation Nicholas Souchon, who had been the cellarmaster at Clos Saint Jean in Chateauneuf-du-Pape, and with the help of superstar consultant Philippe Cambie, decided to produce his own wine from the family’s 28-acre (12 ha) estate in the Duché d’Uzès region. In 2013 this region earned AOP status, giving it the same status as nearby Gigondas and Vacqueyras. This confirmed what the Nicolas already knew well: these are great vineyards!

Mas de Volques takes its name from the remains of Volques Arécomiques, an ancient gaulois village discovered on the property over 30 years ago. The vineyards are a mix of clay and limestone, located at the foothills of the Cevennes mountains. Both of Nicolas’s red blends highlight the distinctive Syrah grown on the property. The Alba Dolia is a Viognier-dominated blend balanced by Roussanne, Marsanne and Clairette. The Portes de Dieu (“Doors of God”) is 100% Chardonnay.

Heymann-Löwenstein Whoever leaves the globalized highway of industrialization with its "taste-can-be-created" ideology today in order to follow the stony path of terroir wines learns to take himself as not that important, learns to regard nature and the mystery of "wine" with respect and humility. At the same time he also discovers a new freedom. The idea of terroir liberates you from the obligation of having to produce wine that has to please everyone, of having to produce wine for the "common market.” Terroir always means more liberation, and the realization of individual dreams when it comes to interpreting the vineyard. - Reinhard Löwenstein

Maison Anselmet Historic records mention a wine producer named Anselmet in the Aosta Valley in the 16th century. Nearly four centuries later in 1978, after decades of making wine only for family consumption, Renato Anselmet began producing wine commercially. In 2001 his son Giorgio took over the business and the modern reputation of Maison Anselmet as top producer of Alpine wines began. In 2009 a new winery was built and today Anselmet continues as one of the quality standard bearers for the Aosta Valley.

The vineyards of Maison Anselmet reach extreme altitudes, with some planted on impossible slopes, are they all different from each other, whether by soil type, size or grape varieties planted. Where they do not differ is in the care shown to the vines during the growing season. In this extreme, sunny, windy climate, everything in the vineyard is done by hand. The range of wines Anselmet produces from these sites are distinctive and elegant, compelling for wine lovers and an effortless match for a wide range of meals.

Cave Mont Blanc Founded in 1983, Cave Mont Blanc grows wine grapes in the mountain hamlets of Morgex and La Salle, in the northwest corner of Italy. These vineyards are at the highest elevation that grapes are grown in Europe, between 3000 and 4000 feet above sea level. The winery produces still and sparkling wine from local variety Prié Blanc on original, un-grafted rootstock. A fascinating grape variety, Prié Blanc may have originally been planted by the Romans, and is characterized by floral, grassy, straw, herb and lemon aromas with medium body, and flavors of yellow fruit, spice and a firm, stony minerality.

Perhaps the leading producer in the region, Cave Mont Blanc’s wines are classic and true to type. The standard bearing still wine is the Blanc de Morgex et de La Salle. The Blanc du Blanc and longer aged barrel selection Cuvée Gerbollier are among the most distinctive sparkling wines made in Europe.

Osvaldo Barberis The vineyards of Osvaldo Barberis are in the very northern part of the Langhe in Dogliani just south of Monforte d’Alba. As with many working farms, Osvaldo tends to grapes and olive trees along with raising prized Piemontese beef. Among the wine grapes, Dolcetto is Osvaldo’s focus, with the balance of his vineyard planted to Nebbiolo, Barbera and a very small plot of Nascetta.

The soft-spoken Osvaldo is very proud, in particular, of his Dolcettos. The Valdiba bottling is higher toned and floral, while the Puncin is more deeply colored with notes of dark red berries. The average vine age is 40 years with some sections reaching 80 to 85 years old. Soils are mainly a mix of clay and limestone. All grapes are hand-harvested and wines are bottled unfiltered, with very little sulfites used.

Corino The Corinos started as farmworkers and in 1952 they leased the land in Annuziata in La Morra from the church. The land was planted with fruit trees and grapevines, and they sold the grapes to other producers, holding back a small amount for personal use. In 1987, with the help of their good friend Elio Altare, they bottled their first wine. At the same time, their sons, Giuliano and Renato, took over management of the property and started improving the quality of the farming and purchased their first fermentation tanks and oak barrels. In 2005, Renato left to start his own company and today, Corino is operated by Giuliano and his wife, Stefania.

Corino has 8 ha (20 acres) of vineyards, planted to Nebbiolo, Barbera and Dolcetto. All farming is organic and sustainable. Stylistically, Corino’s wines are classic expressions of their grape varieties, and reference points for the region. L’Insieme, meaning together, is made by a group of eight small wine producers from the Piedmont Region. Fondly called “Elio (Altare) and the low yield producers” – as low yields is the production philosophy. They are committed to re-establishing the circle between cattle raising and wine production. Combined with the Slow Food association, money raised is used to purchase cattle and grazing land.

Cecilia Monte Coming from a winegrowing family, Cecilia Monte’s wines capture not only the traditions of this corner of Piedmont, but a fresh approach to making stylish wines in this largely male-dominated region. Her ten-acre estate is situated at the northern edge of the Barbaresco appellation, in the town of Neive at roughly 1000 feet elevation, in an area rich in natural biodiversity. The Serracapelli cru produces structured Barbaresco with high-toned, sometimes exotic aromatics. Cecilia’s father, Paolo, is still very much involved in the company and Cecilia’s top bottling comes from his favorite rows in this vineyard.

The wines Cecilia makes come from vines as old as 50 years, in soil composed of largely bluish calcarous marl, and are typically held a year or two longer in bottle before release than some of her neighbors. Roccia Rossa Roccia Rossa is in tiny Villa del Bosco, in the north of Piedmont in the Alpine foothills, roughly halfway between Turin and Lake Como. Here in the Bramaterra DOC, like the more famous Barolo region about 60 miles to the south, wines are based on Nebbiolo, but here it is blended with local varieties such as Vespolina, itself a cousin of Nebbiolo. Since the entire DOC includes fewer than forty hectares of grapevines, Bramaterra wines are seldom seen outside the region but should be of interest to anyone enchanted by Piedmontese Nebbiolo.

At roughly 1200 feet elevation, Roccia Rossa’s vineyards average 25 years old, with volcanic soils and a Southern exposure. Overlapping with the Bramaterra DOC, the Costa della Sessia DOC produces easy-to-love wines. Roccia Rossa’s 100% Nebbiolo Rosato is elastic and ductile, and the Galliano cuvee is a bright, easy- going blend of Nebbiolo and Barbera. The fuller-bodied Bramaterra is aged 24 months in oak before bottling, while the Riserva, from the oldest part of the vineyard, is aged 30 months in oak then an additional three years in bottle before release. Fewer than 500 cases of each of these four wines are produced, with only a tiny amount exported to the U.S. FORMAT CASE BOTTLE 3 CASE 5 CASE Coste della Sesia “Galliano” 2015 12 x 750 $192 $16.00 $186 $180 70% Nebbiolo, 15% Barbera, 15% Croatina Bramaterra 2013 12 x 750 $348 $29.00 $336 $324 85% Nebbiolo, 10% Vespolina, 5% Croatina Bramaterra Riserva 2012 12 x 750 $432 $36.00 $420 $408 80% Nebbiolo, 15% Vespolina, 5% Croatina

Vignetti Zanatta In 1975 young winemaker Bruno Zanatta moved from Treviso to Sardinia where he spent the next 30 years honing his skills at wineries in the region. In 2005 he found the perfect vineyard site and with his family purchased two large plots of land in the Gallura area of Sardinia, a hilly region in the northeast corner of the island. Gallura is known for its granite rocks that are shaped by the wind, the rain and the sea.

Located about a mile from the Mediterranean this land was selected to take advantage of the steady winds on Sardinia. When it does rain, the vines dry within minutes, which helps guarantee that pests and disease are almost never an issue. The grapes planted are Vermentino and Cannonau on soils typical for the Gallura region, sand over granite bedrock.

Fattoria di Piazzano Fattoria di Piazzano is southwest of Florence in the rolling hills of western Chianti, off the road that leads to Pisa and Livorno. Here in 1948 the big Tuscan sky offered its founder, Otello Bettarini, the opportunity to follow his two passions, wine and astronomy.

In the late 1990s Rolando and Ilaria Bettarini took the reins of the vineyard and winery. The vineyard is farmed organically and sustainably. Unlike some Chianti producers that may be better-known in the U.S., Fattoria di Piazzano sells most of its wine in Italy where it has a loyal following. The Ventoso is sort of a baby super- Tuscan red, an easy-drinking blend of classic Tuscan varieties, and the Colorino offers a rare glimpse at this classic Tuscan variety as a stand-alone wine. Podere Forte Located in the beautiful Orcia Valley between Montalcino and Montepulciano, Podere Forete was founded in the mid-1990s by Pasquale Forte. Once known as Podere Petrucci, this large farm uses a majority of the land for olive groves, grain fields, livestock pastures, beehives, and decorative gardens, with just a fraction of the property devoted to vineyards. Pasquale spent years returning the estate to its former glory, and while it produces many things, the jewel in the crown is wine.

Vineyard soils are mainly clay-limestone mixed with sand and gravel. In the years preceding vineyard planting, legumes and grains were planted in order to cleanse the soil and to allow meticulous study of each plot. During harvest, each plot is harvested 2-3 times to ensure optimal ripeness for each grape cluster. The grapes of each harvest are vinified separately; selection in the cellar is strict in order to achieve the best wines possible each vintage. Poggio Lucina The Di Donato family has been farming in Montalcino for generations. In 2002 they established the vineyards that would become Poggio Lucina, taking the winery name from the goddess Lucina, protector of women at work. Winemaker Evelise Di Donato respects the traditions of this historic region but focuses on purity of fruit and elegance in her wines more than some of her “old-school” neighbors.

The Rosso di Montalcino is aged for one year in a mix of traditional large Slavonian oak barrels and French barriques, and the finished wine shows the typical cherry and violet notes the DOC is known for. Brunello di Montalcino is aged in large Slavonian oak for 4 years followed by a minimum of six months in bottle before release, and the finished wine is polished and rich, with notes of blueberry, cranberry and bitter almond.

Tuscany

Tenimenti d’Alessandro This property was founded in 1967 by the d’Alessandro family just outside Cortona in south-east Tuscany. At that time, the wine production in Cortona consisted of blended or inexpensive wine only. In 1988, after studies by Prof. Attilio Scienza at The University of Milan, 10 acres of Syrah were planted as an experiment in order to determine the vine-growing potential of the area. Clones best suited for the area were chosen from the Rhone Valley. In 1999 the marriage between this terroir and the Syrah grape was officially recognized and the Cortona DOC establishing Syrah as well-suited to the area was established.

From 1993 to 2003 Tenimenti d'Alessandro gradually replanted their vineyards to Syrah and Viognier. Today Syrah is considered an authentic local Cortona variety and the production of the Tenimenti d'Alessandro winery represents one of the quality benchmarks for Italian Syrah. The talented Filippo Calabresi is the winemaker. FORMAT CASE BOTTLE 3 CASE 5 CASE Bianco Toscana IGT 2018 12 x 750 $150 $12.50 $144 $138 100% Viognier

Veneto

Adalia The Adalia estate is in the lovely Valle di Mezzane in Verona and is owned and run by Marinella Camerani and her daughter Federica. Marinella built her reputation at Corte Sant’Alda, where her celebrated Amarones and Reciotos earned her the “Winemaker of the Year” accolade from Gambero Rosso in 2008. In 2009 she purchased a seven acre parcel of pergola trained vineyards on a limestone-rich hillside near Corte Sant’Alda and Adalia was born. The estate is named for a type of ladybug (Adalia bipunctata) found in the vineyards that keeps the aphid population in check.

Federica leads the winemaking at Adalia, and her wines are made with native yeast, and bottled unfined and unfiltered. Stylistically they share a freshness and a purity of expression making them textbook examples of these classic Veneto wines. Federica is currently overseeing the estate’s conversion to biodynamic production.

Domaines Lupier In 2006, Enrique Basarte and Elisa Úcar started rescuing small plots of Garnacha in very old vineyards. After many years’ experience working in wine, and convinced that the making of a great wine takes place in the vineyard, Elisa and Enrique examined the terroir in various areas until they found what they were looking for: old Garnacha vines in different soils, orientations and altitudes – between 1300 and 2500 feet above sea level in the north of Spain. In total Domaines Lupier consists of twenty-seven small plots located in an Atlantic climate in the northern Navarra region. Of the 14 ha (35 acres) the largest plot is 1.2 ha (3 acres); yields average a meager 1.2 tons per acre.

Lupier means "path of the wolf." Centuries ago, wolves dominated these higher elevation areas. The twenty- seven small vineyards, some planted as far back as 1903, made it possible to obtain the “savage” expression of Garnacha they were looking for. The La Dama plots are surrounded by numerous wildflowers. It is these wildflowers that give La Dama its floral lift or perfume.

The wines are aged in large oak barrels for up to 24 months before bottling. FORMAT CASE BOTTLE 3 CASE 5 CASE El Terroir 2014 6 x 750 $138 $23.00 $132 $126 100% Garnacha La Dama 2013 6 x 750 $216 $36.00 $210 $204 100% Garnacha

Rueda

Bodega Traslagares After extensive experience as winegrowers, the Gaona family decided in 2009 to build a winery on their property in Rueda and to resume the wine-making tradition inherited from their grandfathers.

The family’s west-facing hillside vineyards are planted on a mix of gravel and calcium soils. Most vines are over twenty-five years old and are distributed in three “pagos” (Spanish term for small agricultural lands): Traslagares, Torreoń and Papin.́ Grapes are harvested at night for maximum freshness.

Graubünden

Donatsch The Donatsch family has been making wine on their property in Malans, Switzerland, just south of Lichtenstein, for over 120 years. In the 1970s Thomas Donatsch, inspired by the great wines of the Côte d’Or, replanted most of the vineyard to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, which were not officially approved varieties at the time. In 1973 his friend André Noblet, winemaker at Domaine de la Romanee Conti, gave him three used La Tache barrels, and Donatsch became one of the pioneering wineries in Switzerland to make wine using Burgundy as the model.

The Donatsch estate is in the Bundner̈ Herrschaft sub-zone of Graubunden,̈ with about 11 acres under vine. Under a layer of clay lay several meters of chalky limestone ideal for growing Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The vineyards all enjoy southern exposure and are aided by the bright sunshine during the day and cooling Alpine winds at night. In addition to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, another passion for Donatsch is Completer, a rare indigenous white grape with cultivation records dating back to 1321. Once nearly extinct, Donatsch farms 1.5 acres, making them perhaps the largest grower of the variety in the world.

Neuchâtel

La Maison Carrée The Perrochet family can trace its heritage in Auvernier, in the Neuchâtel region, back to the 16th Century when the Maison Carrée, a landmark in the village, was built. The family began tending vines and making wine on the property soon thereafter. Managed by Jean-Denis and Christine Perrochet since 2008, their son Alexandre is now taking over winemaking responsibilities.

The two estate vineyards are located about six miles apart: one near Auvernier to the west of Lake Neuchâtel and the other in Hauterive to the east. The diverse stony soils in these vineyards are rich in marl, limestome and iron, creating expressive, aromatic whites – including the lovely Alpine variety, Savagnin – and silky, minerally Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The detailed, intense Le Lerin Pinot Noir comes from seventy year- old vines. La Maison Carrée’s wines have been produced Biodynamically since 2012. Marlborough

Huia Claire and Mike Allan started Huia Vineyards in 1996. Prior to that, they had gained valuable experience at wineries in Marlborough. Mike at Cloudy Bay and Vavasour and Claire at Corbans and Lawson's Dry Hills. They also both worked and made wine in at Veuve Cliquot and Taittinger, respectively. This diverse, hands-on experience gave them a great grounding in making bright fruit-driven wines, but also integrated an appreciation of the sense of land, heritage and tradition.

Two estate vineyards provide grapes for the Huia Sauvignon Blanc, one providing a tropical fruit profile while the other adds pleasant herbaceous notes, lime and minerality. Around ten percent of the juice undergoes natural fermentation in a mixture of neutral to new French oak. Elderflower, red bell pepper, and nettles lift the nose; the palate is fine, well balanced and shows classical minerality. For Huia’s Pinot Noir, perfect dark purple bunches are hand-picked and then de-stemmed into tank. After a cold soak, a controlled fermentation lasts about two weeks. In the finished wine, black red fruits and smoky, savory notes show on the nose. The palate has dark cherry, hints of blackberry, spice, chocolate and vanilla. Huia’s wines are certified organic and are biodynamically grown. A second wine, Hunky Dory, is made in a more easy drinking style.
