Welcome also to our part of paradise and we hope you make time to explore the fantastic and remarkable locations we have to offer. Many thanks go to all the Softball Far North Qld committee, volunteers and community members for helping make this tournament possible.     Joyce Lester OAM (Qld) Player number # 87 235 games for Australia Representing Australia in softball from 1977 to 1996, Joyce Lester is recognised as an icon of the sport. After representing Queensland as a catcher at the U16 and U19 level, Lester was automatically selected for the Open team. She was the Queensland captain from 1983 and was a member of eight Gilley's Shield (Australian Open Women's Championship) winning teams (1975, 1983, 1984, 1987, 1992, 1994, 1995, 1996). Captain of the last seven. Lester was also a member of her club team, the Rebels, which won the 1984, 1986, and 1987 National Club Championships. In 1990 she was named the Most Valuable Player. First selected to represent Australia in 1977 as an 18 year old against New Zealand, Lester immediately established a permanent place in the team and represented Australia continuously over 19 years including 29 international competitions encompassing over 200 matches and five world championships - 1978 (El Salvador), 1982 (Taiwan), 1986 (Auckland), 1990 (Normal, Illinois), and 1994 (Newfounder, Canada) beating the four World Championship representations held by former Australian softballer, Midge Nelson. Her performance as captain of the Australian team at the 1986 World Championshi was outstanding with a batting average of .313 (in the top-10at the championship) and a perfect fielding average of 1000. This performance saw Lester recognised as the best catcher at the championship and gained her selection into the World All Star team. Lester also won All Star honours following the Intercontinental Cup in Italy in 1989. Lester recovered from serious abdominal surgery in 1992 to regain her fitness and take her place in the silver medal winning team at the Challenger Cup in Beijing.

    Media Release 9 September 2010 Mosley retires from international competition Softball Australia announced today the retirement of Catcher Tracey Mosley from international Softball competition. A dual Olympian and four time World Championship player, Tracey's international Softball career spanned 20 years. Tracey's first international competition was the 1991 International Softball Federation (ISF) World Junior Softball Championship in Adelaide. It wasn't long before Tracey made her debut as the 163rdcapped player on the Aussie Spirit Australian Open Women's team’s 1992 tour to China. Tracey was a regular in the team until narrowly missing selection for the 1996 Olympic Games. She took a break from the game and returned refreshed and stronger to force her way back into the team selected to compete in the ISF World Championships in 2002. Tracey then went on to compete at the 2004 and 2008 Olympic Games, and the 2006 and 2010 ISF Open Women's World Championships. During her playing career, Tracey accumulated 288 international playing caps and was a key part of Australia's success – she has two Bronze Women's World Championship medals (1994, 2006) and a silver and bronze Olympic medal (2004, 2008). A highlight for Tracey was winning the silver medal in Athens, saying, "The team and the team dynamics were very special, and we all played for each other." The players that inspired Tracey over the years were Jenny Holliday, "it was a great challenge to get a hit off her;, Joyce Lester "an absolute legend of our game....she always took the time to chat"; and Mel Roche "for her passion for the game." As a senior member of the 2010 Aussie Spirit World Championship team, Tracey was inspired by her younger teammates.

    Legend JOYCE LESTER OAM Queensland Player Number ~ 151 Joyce first represented Queensland at the Under 16 level in 1973. Moving quickly through the ranks she was selected in her first Queensland Open Team in 1975 and continued for 21 years before retiring in 1996. She was recognised for her strong leadership by being appointed vice-captain in 1981 to 1983 and then captain of the Queensland Open Women’s Team for 12 years. Joyce was a member of 8 Queensland teams which won the Gilley’s Shield and in 1987 she won the Batting Award (.400). Joyce was a scholarship holder of the Queensland Academy of Sport and Australian Institute of Sport and an inaugural member of both the QAS and AIS Softball Squads. Though Joyce finished her career as a Catcher she was, in her earlier years, one of the country’s most talented Outfielders. Australian Player Number ~ 87 Joyce’s Australian Open Representative career began in 1977 until her retirement in 1996. She competed in 5 World Championships winning 2 bronze medals and an Olympic Bronze Medal at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games. Joyce played 235 games for Australia was captain of the Australian team for 11 years. In the 1986 Sixth Women’s World Championship in Auckland, New Zealand Joyce was selected in the All Star Team with a .313 Batting Average and 1000 Fielding Average. Joyce has continued to give back to softball as a volunteer, particularly in the coaching arena.   • Joyce Lester Shield U23 Women's Championship
    Joyce Lester Shield U23 Women’s Championship On the Queen’s Birthday weekend in June 2001 Joyce was recognised for her service to softball as a player and a coach. The records she set as a player are remarkable and will long stand in the annals of our sport. Joyce started playing softball at school and soon joined a club team playing in Brisbane Softball Association fixture. She had a long association with the ‘Devils’ club where she played until 1981/2. Her love of the game never wavered through the ensuing years as she played for two more of the Brisbane affiliated clubs, Rebels 1982/3 to 1993/4 and Bears 1994/5 and 1995/6. As a member of those club teams, Joyce played a big part in many Premiership wins. In addition to this, as a member of the Rebels team, she won three national club championships. She represented Brisbane at state championships every year from 1973 to 1995. Joyce did not believe in “rests”. She believed she should always make herself available to club, state and nation. In the National Fastpitch League, Joyce played for Brisbane team ‘Strikers’ 1991 to 1995 and ‘Diamonds’ in 1996. Joyce’s state representation began in 1973 when she was Vice Captain of the Queensland under 16 team in Adelaide. She was named Captain in 1974. Queensland U19 selection came in 1976 at the inaugural under 19 national championship held in Brisbane. Joyce had already played in open competition the previous year (1975). From 1975 to 1996 she represented our state in open competition on twenty-one occasions and held the position of Vice Captain three times and Captain twelve.
