Rovers Return landlady Annie Walker once declared the view to be of: ‘… blackened chimneys piercing the sultry sky like jagged teeth’. Sheer poetry! The original title sequence was filmed in Archie Street, Salford, which was demolished in 1971. The opening titles we currently see on screen were introduced in May 2010. Cue the familiar theme tune – turn the page and settle in for a nostalgic trip down memory lane… 6 First Episode (1960) Elsie Tanner, played by Pat Phoenix, was one of the original Coronation Street characters. She was the first siren of the Street, the show’s original tart with a heart. Elsie was a headstrong, passionate and wilful woman with an eye for the fellas, too. In 23 years on the Street, Elsie entertained 20 men and married 3 of them. Her golden rule was never to mess with another woman’s man, but the women on the Street still marked Elsie as a threat. Elsie’s flame-haired beauty was just a little too exotic for Weatherfield ways. In this scene, Elsie sits at a table in her living room and surveys her reflection in the mirror. ‘Eeh, Elsie. You’re just about ready for the knacker yard.’ 8 Minnie, Ena and Martha (1961) Minnie Caldwell, Ena Sharples and Martha Longhurst formed a formidable trio of Coronation Street’s older ladies. They liked to meet for a gossip and a glass of milk stout in the snug at the Rovers Return. Ena was the show’s original battleaxe, a harridan in a hairnet who often bullied her friend, the timid, cat-loving Minnie. Despite their waspish bickering, the three women remained friends until Martha passed away after suffering a heart attack in the snug in 1964. Musing on death, Ena once said: ‘I would just like to go the way me mother did. She just sat up, broke wind, and died.’ Left to right: Minnie Caldwell [Margot Bryant], Ena Sharples [Violet Carson] and Martha Longhurst [Lynne Carol]. 10 Christmas at the Rovers Return (1967) Weatherfield knows how to enjoy a festive knees-up. Proving that the Rovers Return has always known how to throw a great party, here is a group of the regulars enjoying a sing-along at Christmas 1967. With Ena Sharples playing the pub piano, many of the Coronation Street regulars are pictured in party mode. On the piano sits Elsie Tanner surrounded by Stan and Hilda Ogden, Emily Nugent and the Rovers’ landlord and landlady Jack and Annie Walker. Left to right: Lucille Hewitt [Jennifer Moss], Minnie Caldwell [Margot Bryant], Stan Ogden [Bernard Youens], Annie Walker [Doris Speed], Ena Sharples [Violet Carson], Emily Nugent [Eileen Derbyshire], Jerry Booth [Graham Haberfield], Jack Walker [Arthur Leslie], Hilda Ogden [Jean Alexander], Steve Tanner [Paul Maxwell] and Elsie Tanner [Patricia Phoenix]. 12 Newton and Ridley Newton and Ridley is the brewery which has been supplying beer to the Rovers Return since the programme began.

  • Issues of Image and Performance in the Beatles' Films
“All I’ve got to do is Act Naturally”: Issues of Image and Performance in the Beatles’ Films Submitted by Stephanie Anne Piotrowski, AHEA, to the University of Exeter as a thesis for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English (Film Studies), 01 October 2008. (signed)…………Stephanie Piotrowski ……………… Piotrowski 2 Abstract In this thesis, I examine the Beatles’ five feature films in order to argue how undermining generic convention and manipulating performance codes allowed the band to control their relationship with their audience and to gain autonomy over their output. Drawing from P. David Marshall’s work on defining performance codes from the music, film, and television industries, I examine film form and style to illustrate how the Beatles’ filmmakers used these codes in different combinations from previous pop and classical musicals in order to illicit certain responses from the audience. In doing so, the role of the audience from passive viewer to active participant changed the way musicians used film to communicate with their fans. I also consider how the Beatles’ image changed throughout their career as reflected in their films as a way of charting the band’s journey from pop stars to musicians, while also considering the social and cultural factors represented in the band’s image.

  • Scholarship Boys and Children's Books
Scholarship Boys and Children’s Books: Working-Class Writing for Children in Britain in the 1960s and 1970s Haru Takiuchi Thesis submitted towards the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the School of English Literature, Language and Linguistics, Newcastle University, March 2015 ii ABSTRACT This thesis explores how, during the 1960s and 1970s in Britain, writers from the working-class helped significantly reshape British children’s literature through their representations of working-class life and culture. The three writers at the centre of this study – Aidan Chambers, Alan Garner and Robert Westall – were all examples of what Richard Hoggart, in The Uses of Literacy (1957), termed ‘scholarship boys’. By this, Hoggart meant individuals from the working-class who were educated out of their class through grammar school education. The thesis shows that their position as scholarship boys both fed their writing and enabled them to work radically and effectively within the British publishing system as it then existed. Although these writers have attracted considerable critical attention, their novels have rarely been analysed in terms of class, despite the fact that class is often central to their plots and concerns. This thesis, therefore, provides new readings of four novels featuring scholarship boys: Aidan Chambers’ Breaktime and Dance on My Grave, Robert Westall’s Fathom Five, and Alan Garner’s Red Shift. The thesis is split into two parts, and these readings make up Part 1. Part 2 focuses on scholarship boy writers’ activities in changing publishing and reviewing practices associated with the British children’s literature industry. In doing so, it shows how these scholarship boy writers successfully supported a movement to resist the cultural mechanisms which suppressed working-class culture in British children’s literature.

  • Lesbian Brides: Post-Queer Popular Culture
Lesbian Brides: Post-Queer Popular Culture Dr Kate McNicholas Smith, Lancaster University Department of Sociology Bowland North Lancaster University Lancaster LA1 4YN [email protected] Professor Imogen Tyler, Lancaster University Department of Sociology Bowland North Lancaster University Lancaster LA1 4YN [email protected] Abstract The last decade has witnessed a proliferation of lesbian representations in European and North American popular culture, particularly within television drama and broader celebrity culture. The abundance of ‘positive’ and ‘ordinary’ representations of lesbians is widely celebrated as signifying progress in queer struggles for social equality. Yet, as this article details, the terms of the visibility extended to lesbians within popular culture often affirms ideals of hetero-patriarchal, white femininity. Focusing on the visual and narrative registers within which lesbian romances are mediated within television drama, this article examines the emergence of what we describe as ‘the lesbian normal’. Tracking the ways in which the lesbian normal is anchored in a longer history of “the normal gay” (Warner 2000), it argues that the lesbian normal is indicative of the emergence of a broader post-feminist and post-queer popular culture, in which feminist and queer struggles are imagined as completed and belonging to the past. Post-queer popular culture is depoliticising in its effects, diminishing the critical potential of feminist and queer politics, and silencing the actually existing conditions of inequality, prejudice and stigma that continue to shape lesbian lives. Keywords: Lesbian, Television, Queer, Post-feminist, Romance, Soap-Opera Lesbian Brides: Post-Queer Popular Culture Increasingly…. to have dignity gay people must be seen as normal (Michael Warner 2000, 52) I don't support gay marriage despite being a Conservative.
