Protect the Ancient Rollright Stones from Road Expansion Protect the ancient Rollright Stones from road expansion To: Oxfordshire & Warwickshire County Councils At a recent meeting of Oxfordshire County Council, the cabinet member responsible for transport endorsed the idea of re-routing HGV traffic from Chipping Norton along the Rollright Road. We call on you to take the initiative to rule out immediately upgrading the road through the Rollright Stones for HGVs, but also to initiate traffic calming measures and ban non-local HGVs from that road. Why is this important? The Rollright Stones have stood high on the boundary between what is now Oxfordshire and Warwickshire for more than five and a half thousand years. Today they remain an important landmark and a place of gentle pilgrimage for many people seeking both a spiritual connection with our landscape and a place of quiet enjoyment and thoughtfulness. The peace of the Rollright stones is now under threat from proposals to turn the quiet road that runs beside it into a major route for Heavy Goods Vehicles to bypass Chipping Norton. We need your support to convince local planners to think again and to protect the peace of the Stones now and in the future. Visit https://www.rollrightstones.co.uk to learn more about this magnificent monument but please, sign this petition to protect them NOW! PETITION: Whilst we understand the context of addressing the HGV traffic and air quality issues in Chipping Norton, the Rollright Road is a narrow C road entirely unfit for HGV traffic, or for upgrading to a full trunk road. The option has been examined on various occasions over the last twelve years, and even without fully considering the heritage, cultural and landscape implications, it has been dismissed – most recently in 2016 concluding “this option should not be pursued for further investigation.” Oxfordshire’s Local Transport Plan 4, West Oxfordshire’s Local Plan, the Chipping Norton Neighbourhood Plan and the DEFRA-approved Chipping Norton Air Quality Action Plan ALL propose that HGVs (other than for local purposes) should be banned from the centre of Chipping Norton and the A44 de-primed with HGVs being encouraged to use the A40 instead. Furthermore, Goal 1 of the Oxfordshire Local Transport Plan states that ‘’We will work to ensure that the transport network supports sustainable economic and housing growth in the county, whilst protecting our environmental and heritage assets, and supporting the health and wellbeing of residents.” We are very concerned that without proactive management a significant increase in HGVs would arise using Rollright Road as a rat-run between the A44 and A344. The road passes within only 7m of the Kings Men stone circle and 30m from the King Stone. Part of the heritage and cultural value of the Stones is that in addition to c.20,000 visitors annually they are increasingly visited by school parties of 30-60 (sometimes up to 90) 7- and 8-year olds who have to cross the road. At 5m wide the road only just fits two passing HGVs, and the nearby blind crossroads at Tollhouse Cottage is notoriously dangerous. Rather than encouraging more HGV traffic passing through the Stones – whether directly or inadvertently – it should be actively discouraged. We are concerned for the safety of people visiting the Stones, for local residents affected by inappropriate and reckless road use, as well as for the preservation of the Stones as a major cultural asset. The Rollright Trust has dedicated and very experienced trustees who have developed a very highly respected approach to managing the Stones and safeguarding them for generations to come, not just as a relic from ancient times. We hope our local Councils share this sense of responsibility and will act positively with strategic foresight to protect residents and the environment. • Early Medieval Oxfordshire
Anglo-Saxon Oxfordshire Sally Crawford and Anne Dodd, December 2007 1. Introduction: nature of the evidence, history of research and the role of material culture Anglo-Saxon Oxfordshire has been extremely well served by archaeological research, not least because of coincidence of Oxfordshire’s diverse underlying geology and the presence of the University of Oxford. Successive generations of geologists at Oxford studied and analysed the landscape of Oxfordshire, and in so doing, laid the foundations for the new discipline of archaeology. As early as 1677, geologist Robert Plot had published his The Natural History of Oxfordshire ; William Smith (1769- 1839), who was born in Churchill, Oxfordshire, determined the law of superposition of strata, and in so doing formulated the principles of stratigraphy used by archaeologists and geologists alike; and William Buckland (1784-1856) conducted experimental archaeology on mammoth bones, and recognised the first human prehistoric skeleton. Antiquarian interest in Oxfordshire lead to a number of significant discoveries: John Akerman and Stephen Stone's researches in the gravels at Standlake recorded Anglo-Saxon graves, and Stone also recognised and plotted cropmarks in his local area from the back of his horse (Akerman and Stone 1858; Stone 1859; Brown 1973). Although Oxford did not have an undergraduate degree in Archaeology until the 1990s, the Oxford University Archaeological Society, originally the Oxford University Brass Rubbing Society, was founded in the 1890s, and was responsible for a large number of small but significant excavations in and around Oxfordshire as well as providing a training ground for many British archaeologists. Pioneering work in aerial photography was carried out on the Oxfordshire gravels by Major Allen in the 1930s, and Edwin Thurlow Leeds, based at the Ashmolean Museum, carried out excavations at Sutton Courtenay, identifying Anglo-Saxon settlement in the 1920s, and at Abingdon, identifying a major early Anglo-Saxon cemetery (Leeds 1923, 1927, 1947; Leeds 1936).

saturday 8 - monday 31 may 2010 free guide www.artweeks.org Sponsored by Welcome to Artweeks 2010 2010 is set to be the biggest Artweeks ever with 474 sites exhibiting during the Festival. Artweeks plays a vital role in bringing artists and art enthusiasts and buyers together across the county. Our goal this year is to bring new audiences to the work of Oxfordshire's creative community, those who might find the idea of going to a gallery daunting. By visiting an open studio and talking to the artist you get to understand the creative process, the way they have tried to convey their ideas and the effect they have created. Most of the works on view are for sale and you'll find some originals at prices that you might pay for a mass-produced copy in a quality department store. Artweeks is all about involvement and originality; by simply going along to a couple of studios and seeing what is on offer, you too add to the vibrancy of Oxfordshire's biggest arts festival. It’s always exciting to write, most of all about the Shots – I have improved greatly since last time out. Being encouraged by several personnel and supporters alike, that was the first step to an improvement in my writing and overall, how I approach different projects. I must therefore thank (not least using the Role of Thanks on the following page), but here and for most in advance; here. I have been supporting the Shots for roughly nine years now – I know it’s a short time but I cannot describe my passion and love for Aldershot Town Football Club.

  • The Old Pirate Times
Bristol Rovers Former Players Association Golf Day 2019 The Kendleshire / 13th June BRFPA Annual Golf Day 2019 Judgement Day The morning of 13th June dawned bright and…damp, very damp in fact! As I (Keith Brookman) headed up the motorway to the Kendleshire for the BRFPA 3rd Annual Golf Day, the rain was hammering down and the spray off of the motorway made for a pretty miserable journey. As I drove into the golf club, I half expected to see signs saying; ‘Fairways Flooded’ or ‘Greens Underwater’ and ‘No Golf Today’. I was pleasantly surprised, therefore, to learn that it takes a lot for the Kendle- shire to call a golf event off and the wet weather certainly wasn’t a concern to any of the staff at this superb venue. I arrived in good time and thought I would be first there; how wrong can you be! Andy Rammell and BRFPA President Billy Clark were already deep in conversa- tion, while BRFPA Chairman Tony Mills was the first committee member I spotted. Backtracking for just a moment, how good it was to see Andy Rammell at his first BRFPA event. The striker who became a Rovers legend in just 12 games, looks fit enough to still be playing.
