ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Last time, I was delighted to release my 2013/2014 Aldershot Town Annual (unofficial), back in December (2013), before the forthcoming Christmas.

It’s always exciting to write, most of all about the Shots – I have improved greatly since last time out. Being encouraged by several personnel and supporters alike, that was the first step to an improvement in my writing and overall, how I approach different projects. I must therefore thank (not least using the Role of Thanks on the following page), but here and for most in advance; here.

I have been supporting the Shots for roughly nine years now – I know it’s a short time but I cannot describe my passion and love for Aldershot Town Football Club.

My last annual featured a special message from Aldershot Town Chairman, Shahid Azeem, as well as an article or two from The Shots Trust’s Media & Communications Director, Tommy Anderson.

GRAHAM BROOKLAND

Graham served in a variety of roles at both; the football club and the Supporters’ Club, since the birth of the football club back in 1992, right up until the debt ridden summer of 2013 – serving in the following roles: Head of Media, Website Editor, Shotsline, Secretary and also, a club Director. Thanks again to Graham for contributing and his encouragement to/with this project.

ROLE OF THANKS

This list could be endless, comprehensive and very, very detailed! But, I’ll keep it short and snappy and maybe a little straight to the point. So here goes….

Tommy Anderson – Wrote an article or two for my last annual, which was released just before Christmas (2013). His enthusiasm and interest and tips and advice have really helped me, and a thanks must go to him, plus Ian Goodwright, Chairman of the Shots Trust for our interview a little while back.

Graham (thanks also for the article) & Oliver Brookland – Graham, a co-Club Founder of the “original” football club; the pair have really driven me on and I wouldn’t be here today with my website without Graham; who introduced me to a few members of the Club’s Media Team in 2012/2013. Not least the encouragement and being driven to believe in my writing and to know it will pay off.

Shahid Azeem – Interviewed this very friendly character in the latter of the season (in April, 2014), and very friendly and very helpful too.

Ian Morsman – Would always come high on this list, as describe in my previous annual – an overall great round chap, providing me with the ever so professional and the thinkable top art quality photographs for my blog (website) and annuals like this one.

Andy Scott – The first team boss - who invited me back in August (2013) for some breakfast with the players. It was a fantastic and memorable day.

Pete Stanford – A thanks for providing the statistical information (found on individual page) for this and my last annual.

Furthermore, I must list and thank here: my mum, my dad, and further family, including my brother(s), who has been a great help to my unofficial Aldershot Town FC podcast, called ‘Shots Cast’, and I also must list and thank Richard Petty, Tony Knights, the ShotsWeb.co.uk Forum Team and Head of Media Steve Gibbs, and anyone else who I haven’t included on the above list.

M CLUB HISTORY

Aldershot Town Football Club was born in With 1992, by co-Club Founders, Terry Owens and Graham Brookland, after the fold of the debt “The Aldershot Writer” ridden Aldershot FC that March. And within the first season, they were marked champions of the Isthmian League Division Three and a year later, followed by a promotion from the Isthmian League Division Two as well as reaching the quarter-final stages in the FA Vase. Four seasons in Division One flew by - lifting another trophy; that of the Isthmian League Division One and also winners of the Hampshire Senior Cup the season after.

In 2003, they were granted promotion to the Football Conference and during this period, they were again winners of the Hampshire Senior Cup and then followed by the FA Trophy until the trophy cupboard remained rather dusty when they were crowned champions of the Blue Square Premier, receiving clearance into the Football League as it’s supporters relished the club’s new Football League status.

Aldershot Town FC 2013-2014 End of Season Annual 5 | Page

After the next five years, that status had been stripped from them as the Shots dropped out of the Football League, being relegated on the final day at the New York Stadium with a 2-0 defeat in the hands of Rotherham United, an emotional time for all but their woes didn’t end there. Being placed into administration by majority shareholder (at the time), Kris Machala, on behalf of the board of directors, major creditors the McGinty Trust, appointed administrators, Paul Anthony Goddard and Carl Stuart Jackson of Quantuma Restructuring with no fewer than thirteen others being made redundant in the summer of 2013. Supporters and former players and other well-known names, not necessarily connected to the club in anyway, donated some of their hard earned cash from an appeal by co-club founders Terry Owens and Graham Brookland. This was accompanied by a consortium, just three directors remained on board from last term with a hopefully positive future ahead as the club survived by the skin of it’s teeth.

It hasn’t been an easy one over the years, full of ups and downs, and some life-living memories, but the important thing is THE PHOENIX LIVES ON!

SOME WISE WORDS FROM GRAHAM BROOKLAND

Some wise words from a co-Club Founder of Aldershot Town and recently appointed Club Ambassador, With Graham Brookland, who lives, speaks and writes Aldershot Town, who held a variety of roles at the Graham Brookland football club since it’s birth in 1992; right up until the CLUB AMBASSADOR dismal and emotional 2013 administration days. After a turbulent year it is hoped that the conclusion of the 2013/14 season will set the foundations for the football club as it looks to the future. It was never going to be easy and, indeed, not pretty too. The disruption of relegation from the Football League added to the woe of administration ensured that there would be obstacles, and plenty of them, to endure along the way before any kind of firm footing could be considered. There are no winners from such an experience because of the effect and negativity that surrounds it and that has to be accepted because if any football club should have learned its lessons from the past then it is Aldershot Town. The healing process takes longer for some individuals than others and the obvious anger, disappointment and finger pointing was always going to occur and that is understandable.

However the target for phase one of post admin Aldershot Town was to

Aldershot Town FC 2013-2014 End of Season Annual 7 | Page remain a member of the Conference Premier division. Defeats in March at Tamworth and Braintree Town led many Shots supporters to believe that they may be on the verge of witnessing a double demotion. My view is that such a confirmation would have had a catastrophic effect with regards to the supporter base of the club and its perception. Walking out of the stadium at Braintree there was plenty of discussions taking place. It was generally accepted that the supporters had done their bit with rallying cries and that the only people who could get us out of this sticky situation were the players and management. They should receive great credit for the turnaround of fortunes. Brett Williams' penalty in the sixth minute of injury time at Macclesfield Town paved the way. Everything that epitomizes the experiences of being a football supporter summed up in the kick of a ball. Had that penalty not been converted the consequences could have been severe. The lad showed calmness and composure of extortionate proportions as he slotted the ball home and supporters young and old hugged each other in delirium. The work was continued in nervy circumstances as City were defeated 3-2 on Good Friday and then Woking.

Uncle Tom Cobbley and all were at Kingfield on that Easter Monday lunchtime and it was an occasion that will be remembered for many a year. Mark Molesley's late winner meant that the party could begin in earnest whilst Williams' maturity in dealing with a pressurised situation shone through again minutes before and why not celebrate. This wasn't just about surviving the drop. This was about the relief of passionate football fans who had stuck by their club in the leanest of lean times being part of something special against all the odds. We could have been relegated but we weren't. When the players were asked to stand up and be counted they delivered. They delivered for those fans and the message had struck home the importance of why a football club had to remain in the town.

So many people had played their part over the past year to rejoice in

Aldershot Town FC 2013-2014 End of Season Annual 8 | Page that moment. The supporters who wouldn't let their club die again. Everybody involved deserved the moment.

It means nothing if we cannot move on from here though. I hope that the lessons of the past year are heeded for good this time. We lost it somewhere along the way over the course of the last few years. We may be a small football club but it one with a big heart and that is what makes it special.

M ALDERSHOT TOWN FC TEAM

Glenn Morris

In August 2012, he trialled for cash stricken Portsmouth and was the main goalkeeper to play during a pre-season friendly at the EBB Stadium against League Two (at the time), Aldershot Town.

After not being offered a contract at Fratton Park, he was signed by Aldershot manager (at the time), on a six month contract which was then extended until the end of that season. Morris was made redundant this summer like no fewer than twelve others of the first team squad, and began his senior career at Leyton Orient in 2001.

During his time with Orient, he made 124 league appearances during his nine years with the club. In May 2010, he was released by Leyton Orient and just short of three months later, he put pen to paper on a one year deal with Southend United. With 37 games in all competitions under his belt at The Shrimpers, he extended his contract by a further year. In May 2012, Morris was made unemployed like eleven others at Southend.

Aldershot Town FC 2013-2014 End of Season Annual 18 | Page

Joe Oastler

Aldershot captured the signature of Joe Oastler in August 2013.

Oastler, aged 23, enjoyed youth football since the age of eight at Portsmouth between 1998 and 2008 before joining Conference South side, Bognor Regis Town in 2008 after being deemed surplus to requirements, being released in March that year. After making just 3 appearances with the Rocks, in the summer of 2008, he made an exit to , the home of based, Queens Park Rangers.

He managed to make just one senior appearance for Q.P.R., being loaned out to Salisbury City in 2009 where he featured 11 times and Torquay United, making 85 appearances and netting one goal during his loan period with Torquay before signing on the dotted line for the Gulls in June 2011 on a two year deal.

After a successful trial with Aldershot under the management of Andy Scott, he signed for The Shots in August 2013 after the club was brought out of administration.

Anthony Tonkin

Aldershot captured the signature of Joe Oastler in August 2013.

The England born left sided defender, born in Newlyn (England), began his playing career with Mousehole before switching to Falmouth Town. He helped Mousehole to be the runners-up of the South Western League during the 1997/1998 season. He signed for Yeovil Town in 1998 and during his three years with The Glovers, he made 95 appearances and scored one goal.

A year at Stockport County followed before agreeing terms with Crewe Alexandra in August 2003 for a fee believed to be in the region of £150,000. Anthony was released by Crewe just short of a three year period with the club

Aldershot Town FC 2013-2014 End of Season Annual 19 | Page and this resulted in re-joining Yeovil Town in 2006.

In 2007, he was loaned to Grays Athletic before joining Forest Green Rovers on a permanent transfer in the summer of 2007. He featured 38 times for the Rovers before moving to Cambridge United in July 2008 and after just over five months with The U’s, he joined Oxford United for an undisclosed fee in January 2010.

After being deemed surplus to requirements, four months later, he left Oxford and consequently, joined Aldershot Town in the summer of 2012, putting pen to paper on a one year deal before triggering a clause in his contract which meant that after a handful of appearances, he would extend his stay at the EBB Stadium and avoided unemployment because of this, with no fewer than 13 redundancies within the Aldershot Town Squad.

Craig Stanley

Craig joined Aldershot Town Football Club in July 2012 after leaving Rovers. He began his playing career with Walsall before being loaned out to Raith Rovers.

He had further spells with AFC United, Hereford United, Morecambe, Torquay United (loan) and Bristol Rovers where he which made 34 appearances, netting one goal throughout his time with the Pirates.

At the beginning of the 2013/2014 campaign, Andy Scott named Craig as Club Captain for the upcoming season and is a good but learning leader and is a fantastic rolemodel and image for the club.

Jake Goodman

(returned to parent club before the end of the season)

Jake joined the Shots in August 2013 on loan from Millwall and will remain at the EBB Stadium until January 5th 2014. Goodman is yet to make his first team debut for The Lions, having signed a professional contract in July 2011. Last season, Jake spent a month’s loan at Luton Town, making 11 appearances during this loan period. He made his debut for the Shots in August 2013 during the opening game away to Grimsby Town.

Solomon Taiwo

(returned to parent club before the end of the season)

Twenty eight year old, Solomon, a graduate of the Millwall Academy, before starring for a host of non-league sides

In August 2007, his signature was tied down by his previous bosses at Sutton United in March 2007. During his time with The U’s, he spent valuable loan experience on loan to Dagenham & Redbridge before being snapped up by The Daggers on a permanent basis in October 2007.

An athletic and strong-built central midfielder, whose in-form performances earned him a move to Championship side Cardiff City in August 2009 with a fee believed to have been in the region of £250,000 be paid to Dagenham & Redbridge to ensure and secure his services. His debut for The Bluebirds came in a 2-0 defeat against Doncaster Rovers; as a substitute but lasted just short of two years with limited options in South Wales, in which time freed up more time to return to Dagenham on loan, making a solid 18 appearances this time round in his second loan for The Daggers, finding the net, just on one occasion, followed by Leyton Orient and brief spells with Mansfield Town and Bromley – the very club where he had made his senior footballing debut.

After leaving The Ravens in February 2013, and just over a month of not being on any club’s books, he was reunited with his former Dagenham & Redbridge

Aldershot Town FC 2013-2014 End of Season Annual 21 | Page manager, John Still, eventually signing on with The Hatters for the remainder of the season before dotting a contract extension in May 2013.

Adam Webster

(returned to parent club before the end of the season)

Adam came through the youth ranks at Portsmouth at a young age of 12 and signed a scholarship for Pompey in the summer of 2011.

He made his Pompey debut at the age of 17 the weekend after the Chelsea clash in the FA Cup during a Football League Championship match against West Ham United and came on in place for right back, Greg Halford after 75 minutes.

He has made 21 league appearances for Portsmouth before joining Aldershot Town in August 2013. Webster made his debut on August 10th 2013 during the league opener for the Shots away to Grimsby Town, playing and starting at centre back, partnering fellow loanee, Jake Goodman.

Adam Mekki

Adam enjoyed his youth football days with Reading before moving to Aldershot in 2006 before breaking into the first team and signing a professional contract in 2009 and was amongst three to do this, but he’s the only one of the three remaining.

He made his senior debut for the club in February 2011, coming on for Jermaine McGlashan during a goalless draw at the EBB Stadium in front of the roaring home fans.

He made a further 39 appearances for the now wound up club, being wound up in 2007 after the club entered administration and was liquidated during the summer of 2007, scoring 7 goals for The Yellows.

In August 1998, Rowlands signed for Brentford for a fee in the region of £45,000 and during the space of five years with The Bees, scoring just twenty goals in 152 first team appearances.

He suffered a broken leg but joined Ian Holloway’s (at the time) Queens Park Rangers, on a free transfer during the summer of 2003. Nine years down the line after making 198 appearances and netting 33 goals for The Hoops, having loan spells with Millwall and Wycombe Wanders in 2011 before signing on the dotted line for Colchester United in February 2012. After just a short period of three months with The U’s, he was released through injury after making just 9 appearances during which he had scored 2 goals for Colchester United.

After being made a free agent, in August 2012, he joined Leyton Orient on a month long contract after trialling for The O’s for the past weeks. In August 2013, he put pen to paper, joining liquidation threatened and recently relegated, Aldershot Town FC.

Rowlands has also featured for his home country, the Republic of Ireland Under 21′s and also featuring 5 times for the Republic of Ireland international team.

M A FAREWELL TO KOFI

A farewell and goodbye to scholar, Kofi Halliday who has announced that he has terminated his contract with Aldershot Town, another on the list to leave the Electrical Services Stadium as part of the boss, Andy Scott’s summer squad makeover.

Five faces have so far left the club (those being goalkeeper Luke Williams, midfielders Bobby Webbe and Martin Rowlands and frontmen Bradley Bubb and Matt Paterson), with Kofi being the sixth, with contract discussions still ongoing with the rest of the retained players.

A fellow Shots’ supporter; Matthew Norgate – wrote into us, saying: “Think it is a shame, he had a natural eye for goal and I thought he would make it into the 1st team in a season or so. There are rumours floating around that he is going to sign at a higher level, and if that’s the case really can’t blame him at all.”

On behalf of Aldershot Town, we wish Kofi the best for the future.

M INTERVIEW WITH SHAHID AZEEM

I caught up in an exclusive interview special with Aldershot Town Chairman, Shahid Azeem (SA), after a rollercoaster ride following the dramatic events last summer, who With came under ten questions in ten minutes; talking about the dramatic events of the Shahid Azeem summer (with overcoming administration with the ever so looming threat of liquidation), and more including urging fans to keep the faith ahead of the Shots’ final few games of the season just passed in 2013/2014. Tune in below.

AW: Hi Shahid, how are you?

SA: I’m fine – bit of a cold, but I’m fine.

AW: You must be proud having such icons, such as Frank Burt involved in this football club (who celebrated his 100th birthday this year)?

SA: Well, I think any club in the country would be proud to have someone like Frank Burt. I don’t think there is any football club in the country who can actually sort of go and brag about having a supporter, who has a 100 years; but not someone that has actually followed the football club since (19)26, from when the club was formed to now. So, he’s been coming here for the last 86

Aldershot Town FC 2013-2014 End of Season Annual 45 | Page years and I don’t think there is anybody like Frank really.

AW: Oh ok; I know you were previously involved with local rivals, Woking. What made you change routes and theoretically, set up shop here at the club?

SA: Ermm… in 2010, I was approached by Woking, which I got an office in Woking, I work in Woking and I was approached to become their Chairman. And reality was that you know, it didn’t quite work out and football is one of those things that people have got lots of opinions about certain things. But I think in ten years; no sorry ten months, I did quite a lot of work there but reality was that we didn’t really see eye-to-eye really and that was the direction I wanted to go – so that was the direction I wanted to go. But when I left in 2011, I didn’t really get involved that much in football. I just used to go and watch – go and watch Chelsea, or Guildford City, or Aldershot; and then Nicky Banger (Commercial Manager, Aldershot Town) invited me to come and watch a game and it’s through that - it persuaded me to get involved with the football club.

AW: Ok – when you and your consortium stepped up back in August, when the club was in it’s last knees; did you have had a flutter and butterfly feeling in your stomach?

SA: I think there was a huge-huge emotion during probably from sort of the beginning of January until we enquired the football club. The club has always had financial problems and during the sort of beginning of the year, there was funding required, which we helped. Some of it is historic now and it’s well documented; but I think for the consortium and the people who cared about the club, we really wanted to make sure that there was a club for the community to support. So it was very sleepless nights, lots of challenges, lots of personal sacrifices for everybody. But the reality is today Morgan – that we’re here today, in sort of coming to the end of April and with three games to go; and we’ve still got a football club to support.

AW: What was the situation, if you mind me asking: regarding Terry Owens, a co-club founder of Aldershot Town? Did the result conclude with an open door – so to speak?

SA: Well, the door is open for everybody at the moment and I think people are

Aldershot Town FC 2013-2014 End of Season Annual 46 | Page trying to make more out of this Terry Owens situation than exists. I still regularly talk to Terry and I regularly meet up with Graham Brookland all the time; you know they were co-founders of the original football club. But during the beginning of August when we took over the football club, we wanted to go through lots of changes there but Terry is still a well-respected, well-known celebrity in Aldershot and we continue talking to him at the moment.

AW: Some supporters maybe questioned the judgement or reasoning behind the idea of extending the contracts of management team, Andy Scott and Terry Bullivant. Do you have full faith, whether or not they would pull it off; survival, to make sure the Shots compete in the Skrill Conference Premier next season?

SA: I think the football management team; Andy and Terry, have done a remarkable job. The guys through the year from March weren’t being paid, but still stuck out and they put a lot of time and effort through the summer – you know we were desperate to get players and people always need to understand that the club only came out of (administration) on 1st August, when we started to get the teams ready. But for-for, Andy and Terry – they; we had four players signed on. So I think there’s been a lot of chat and a lot of learning going on there, but we’ve got – the board has a lot of respect and trust in Andy and Terry. But I think it’s always easier to get rid of managers, but you know – that’s not always necessarily the answer and we have faith in Terry and Andy and I think they’ve got vision and you’ve got to build on this foundation.

AW: There have been many ups and downs this season. Many obstacles and bumps and bounces but we’re almost there. Do you urge fans to still keep the faith?

SA: I think the whole club, to be honest Morgan sits on the supporters and the community, and this is one of the football clubs I find the supporters are fantastic where we’ve been going round the rest - when we’ve been going to away matches and service stations: the supporters; we engage with them and I think we really, really want the supporters to get behind it (the club) and the club exists for the supporters.

AW: The official club website maybe suits a purpose, you said that the club are committed to the Football League (interactive) website – but has the “other”

Aldershot Town FC 2013-2014 End of Season Annual 47 | Page body took control as of yet? What would we expect to improve in the following weeks or months?

SA: I think what with the new support company website company: has taken over from about a week or so ago, so come the beginning of the next month or so; there’s plans to get new videos from interviews with players and managers. The look and feel needs to be changed, we need to have an ecommerce site which we can start selling ticketing. So I feel there’s going to be huge change, but we’re still committed to the Football Conference – no sorry the Football League (website), but there’s going to be a lot of work behind the scenes to make give the look and feel a better website.

AW: You were able to welcome two long standing supporters onto the club’s Board of Directors, Peter Bloomfield and Andy Muckett. How will these two appointments benefit and boost the club, maybe not in the near future but the long term too?

SA: I think the – well err; I know Peter Bloomfield very know and I’ve known Andy Muckett for a long time. Andy’s being doing our accounts and helping with our financials and he’s got an accountancy business, so he’s actually bringing those skill sets; which he’ll be running the financial side with Russ Howell. He’s a committed supporter and then, Brian Bloomfield; everyone knows he’s been around since the (19)70’s, so he’s got some time on his hand and he’s had to run a very successful business, and he’s got background in finance, marketing, sales – so it’s more skill sets we need to open up and we need some more blood on the board.

AW: The Board, as well as the Shots Trust, recently released a statement that explained that smoke bombs and flares, which are prohibited in football stadiums around the country, would not be tolerated by the Board of Directors and those who enter a football stadium could risk a banning order and/or even imprisonment. It’s serious stuff now, isn’t it Shahid – it affects the club’s reputation and image and would that maybe make those individuals think twice beforehand?

SA: Well I think it’s actually important Morgan that we actually we have to work with the rules and the laws of the game and I have to say health and

Aldershot Town FC 2013-2014 End of Season Annual 48 | Page safety is absolutely paramount. And flares and these are banned from football clubs and we will do our upmost that goes ahead. And that I was at the game at Luton, and I was probably about sixty or seventy metres away from where the flare went off and I could still smell it from that distance away and I don’t think it’s just not right and we’ll work with the bodies to make sure we engage with people and try to sort of talk to them and to make sure these things don’t happen.

AW: It wouldn’t be without the continuous support of – of course of the supporters, sponsors, staff, management team and fellow directors and also, the players; would we be here today still fighting – we’ve been given another lifeline here haven’t we?

SA: I think this year has been – every game has been a lifeline; we had – when we started the season: we all said we would have our ups and downs this year and we thought we would have some good and some bad days and that’s what makes the football so emotional. I mean – you know: we’ve got three weeks; three games – two hundred and seventy minutes to go. Starting today with Salisbury, I think it’s in our hands and I think the supporters, sponsors, fellow staff and directors; we’re all pulling together to make sure we stay in the Football – in the Football Conference Premier.

AW: Thanks Shahid.

I believe that the Board has a great range of skills and experience to keep the Club on track both on and off the pitch for many years to come.”

A supporter of the Club since 1976, Brian brings valuable experience in sales and marketing, finance and commercial, having been a regional director for one of Britain’s major house builders, Brian Bloomfield, who was an existing member on the Club’s board of directors under previous Chairman Kris Machala, said, “Following an approach from the Club, and after various discussions, I am pleased and proud to join the Board of Directors at Aldershot Town FC. I see this as a privileged custodial position to serve the supporters in the best interests of the Club, and to further its endeavour to cement itself as a fully-embraced community entity. After the difficulties of the previous year it is important that the Club moves forward with the supporters at its centre to fulfil both its goals and aspirations.”

Aldershot Town Chairman, Shahid Azeem said, “Andy and Brian add extra strength, experience and expertise to the Board. We have known both of them for a long time – they are passionate supporters of this Club and support our vision for the future.

“This is great news for the Club and another boost ahead of a crucial week. We have three vital games left to confirm our Skrill Conference Premier status and I believe that the optimism around the Club at the moment will help us to achieve our aims.

“I encourage all Shots fans to join us for the final 270 minutes of the season. Their support has been fantastic all year and I know that they can make a difference, against Salisbury City, Woking and Hereford United. We are very grateful for such fantastic support, which we saw once again at Macclesfield Town last weekend.”

M END OF SEASON REVIEW

After many obstacles and bumps and > quote bounces, we’re finally over the finish line! It may have been an anxious wait but we’ve “ After many obstacles pulled it off. We all share a love for the Shots, and bumps and after a very tough season back in the bounces, we’re finally Conference, following a summer ten point over the finish line! deduction, after the club entered administration on May, 2nd 2013.

Three very tough and restricted months followed, with the threat of liquidation ringing in the ears of the Aldershot Town faithful. The task in hand may not have at all been an easy one but it is an incredible achievement, considering four days or so prior, we had just four senior players on the club’s books.

Thanks to the help of some supportive sponsors and the wider community, management team and a very fresh squad plus a dedicated board of directors, we’ve pulled through after some very tough times. I shared a tear in my eye on May 2nd 2013, as the club entered

Aldershot Town FC 2013-2014 End of Season Annual 56 | Page administration. With Terry Owens also sharing a tear on the local radio, you know when times are tough, as well as the resignation of also co-Club Founder, Graham Brookland from his Head of Media post. Two very committed and very friendly people who gave their life to the club after it initially folded in the Spring of 1992, before forming that same year; further down the non-league pyramid.

The Aldershot Town manager said that he would like rewarding contracts for the forthcoming season, with three players triggering their minimum amount of appearances in their contracts to trigger a contract extension for 2014/2015. Some people doubted whether if the team and everyone could pull it off. It was always to survive in the Conference Premier, with next season always being the aim of consolidating our league position before looking and expecting further – not saying it won’t be easy; it may not.

So; let’s get down to business – re-living some of the events throughout the season.

Starting with July and August then. It all started with a visit down the M25, paying a visit to relatively locals and a well-built Conference South side Eastleigh to kick off their pre-season campaign, only to suffer a 1-0 defeat. Next up was a mid-week visit to Staines Town in a narrow 1-1 draw. A defeat to Basingstoke followed, and then a four goal thriller 2-2 draw at Camberley. That left two – a 3-2 victory against Sutton United and next, the spoils were shared at Kingstonian. The Shots completed their first loan signing, with Millwall’s Jake Goodman joining on a youth loan with the transfer embargo still not lifted straight after the Shots’ exited administration. Then, Portsmouth graduate Adam Webster joined on an initial five month loan. Shots’ fans then discovered the return of Mark Molesley, putting pen to paper on a one year contract before the boss Andy Scott revealed five further signings; with five triallists successfully signing on (those being goalkeeper Glenn Morris, defender Joe Oastler, midfielder Martin Rowlands and also frontmen, Matt

Aldershot Town FC 2013-2014 End of Season Annual 57 | Page

Paterson and Brett Williams). Two more joined on loan, being Portsmouth’s Jack Maloney and Brentford’s Manny Oyeleke, plus trio Chris Barker, Cameron Brown and Aaron Wickham, along with former Chipstead left winger, soon to be converted right back, Jaydon Gibbs.

The season kicked off on 10th August, with a draw against Grimsby on the opening day with Joe Oastler taking the lead for the Shots, with Ross Hannah brought down by Adam Webster in the area, as Hannah stepped up and converted – making no mistake from the spot. The Shots’ opening home game was a 2-1 victorious day to Dartford, saw one change – that being; Adam Mekki sidelined with a fractured collarbone on the opening day at Grimsby with goals from Brett Williams, Manny Oyeleke and Aaron Wickham enough to snatch the three points away from Dartford. Four days later and The Shots suffered their first defeat of their league campaign against a promotion chasing Cambridge United side, before going to Salisbury the following Saturday and seeing the same result. A derby day thriller followed, with Woking visiting the newly renamed The Electrical Services Stadium, as goals from Brett Williams and Matt Paterson were enough to secure the three points against their much- formed rivals, making a delightful bank holiday weekend for the Shots’ community. The final day of August saw the Shots go down 1-0 at Southport, and returning with nothing from Merseyside.

September brought BT Sport coverage of Aldershot Town’s game at Kidderminster Harriers in late September after a 1-0 win over Macclesfield Town, 2-0 win at Hereford United, a buzzing 3-3 draw at Barnet, as well as a 2-0 victory against Wrexham. September saw Lewis Young signing on-on a short term contract, plus defensive cover in the form of Nick Pope from Charlton Athletic, on a month’s loan.

And then goes October – the month when the Shots’ management team (of manager Andy Scott and his right hand man, Terry Bullivant) extended their contracts with the club until June 2016, after arriving in February 2013. The Shots exited the FA Cup in the first qualifying round against

Aldershot Town FC 2013-2014 End of Season Annual 58 | Page

Shortwood United, whilst picking up just one win out of a possible six games, in October – that being a 1-0 victory over Lincoln City. October also saw Andy Scott bolster his available options, with the additions of Portsmouth’s Dan Butler and Reading’s goalkeeper Jonothan Henly.

In November, Scott’s hot shots smashed five past Southport, in front of 1,592, whilst also squeaking past boys, Braintree Town by a 2-1 scoreline, as a 1-1 draw against Weston-Super-Mare earned the Shots’ a replay three days later and a second chance, in the FA Trophy. This was after a double 4-0 defeat at Cambridge United and FC Halifax Town. AFC Wimbledon’s Charlie Strutton arrived on an emergency month’s loan, and also adding Republic of Ireland Under-21 international, Aiden O’Brien from Millwall on a youth loan, with Strutton breaking his leg on his Aldershot Town debut.

December came around and the Shots bypassed Weston-Super-Mare, in a seven goal jam-packed fest in Somerset. Four out of five wins was an excellent record for the keeping – after a 4-1 win over Worcester City in the next round, a thrilling 6-0 victory against Tamworth, 3-1 defeat at Forest Green Rovers and then, a 3-1 win over Welling. December also saw the extension of the loans of Aiden O’Brien and Dan Butler.

The transfer window and loan window reopened in January, when Bradley Bubb made a return to the Shots, in his second spell, as well as the loan addition of Joe Partington, and the short term signings of Josh Scott and Tristan Plummer. Another day and another win in the FA Trophy for the Shots followed, with a 3-0 thumping over Guiseley, as the Shots progressed to the next round. The Shots picked up a 3-1 win over Barnet, with defeats to Wrexham and Nuneaton also, and was followed by 0-0 and 2-2 draws against Gateshead and FC Halifax Town, respectively.

And with three months left, the Shots’ FA Trophy campaign ended in the hands of neighbours, Havant & Waterlooville, in an embarrassing 4-1

Aldershot Town FC 2013-2014 End of Season Annual 59 | Page defeat, before 2-2 draws against Forest Green Rovers and league strugglers, Hyde before it was a point a piece against Dartford.

March brought a hectic schedule for the Shots with a total of six home games in March – against Lincoln City, Chester, Nuneaton Town, Kidderminster Harriers, Gateshead and Hyde. The Shots’ 2013/2014 Tour of Duty was selected for Braintree Town on Saturday, 22nd March, as the Shots Trust operated discounted prices for this trip with the Shots’ travelling in numbers to the heart of Essex, with a pre-match meet in the Orange Tree, with a vibrant atmosphere filling that afternoon. Five additions were made in March; in the form of the experienced Mark Phillips, Bournemouth graduate Harry Cornick, the return of the pair, Manny Oyeleke and Dan Butler on loan and the short term signing of goalkeeper Alan Martin with again low goalkeeping cover, as teenager Luke Williams resumed his usual youth team duties.

M PREVIOUS WORDS FROM THE BOARDROOM

As featured in the previous annual, which was released just before Christmas (2013); words from the boardroom in the shape of Aldershot Town Chairman, Shahid Azeem.

I commend “The Aldershot Writer” for what I know about him. He is a young and very enthusiastic Aldershot supporter who is passionate about the Club and wants to make a positive difference by publishing this unofficial Annual. Although the views expressed may not necessarily be those of the Chairman and the Board, I welcome his ability to air those views in this way and hope that the publication serves to stimulate further and wider interest and discussion and awareness. Morgan McLellan would like to publish this more formally and has asked the Club to help achieve that but at the moment we are not in a position to, so it will remain on-line, for the present at least and hopefully there are individuals or companies out there who will support Morgan and I hope fans and other interested parties will encourage Morgan to pursue his passion.

So thank you The Aldershot Writer. We have already widely and loudly expressed the hope that we can gain a far larger profile in people’s hearts and minds by transparently doing our best for the community and we welcome this kind of entrepreneurial approach from the football part of that community.
