RONA, B.A., UNIVERSIDAD DE LA REPÚBLICA DEL URUGUAY M.A., UNIVERSITY OF MASSACHUSETTS AMHERST Ph.D., UNIVERSITY OF MASSACHUSETTS AMHERST Directed by: Patricia Gubitosi This dissertation explores language policies regarding selection and training of interpreters by the Society of Jesus during 17th and 18th centuries, in the former Paraquaria (the Jesuit Province of Paraguay). The Society of Jesus played a major role in the standardization of indigenous languages, as well as in translation and education policies -all areas of what is now known as language planning. Using as primary sources public and private letters produced by Jesuit authorities during this period, this study identifies overt and covert (Schiffman, 1996) language policies regarding interpreters, their linguistic repertories and the quality of their work. These are considered and analyzed with relation to the political and economic objectives of the Jesuit order and the secular society, in all their contradictions. RONA, B.A., UNIVERSIDAD DE LA REPÚBLICA DEL URUGUAY M.A., UNIVERSITY OF MASSACHUSETTS AMHERST Ph.D., UNIVERSITY OF MASSACHUSETTS AMHERST Dirigida por: Patricia Gubitosi Esta investigación explora las políticas lingüísticas de selección y entrenamiento de intérpretes de la Compañía de Jesús durante los siglos XVII y XVIII en la antigua Provincia Jesuítica del Paraguay. La Compañía de Jesús desempeñó un rol crucial en la estandarización de las lenguas indígenas americanas, por medio de la traducción y de las políticas educativas de las que estuvieron a cargo –áreas estas de lo que hoy se denomina planificación lingüística. Como fuentes primarias para la investigación se utilizaron fundamentalmente cartas públicas y privadas (de circulación restringida) producidas por autoridades de la Compañía durante el período seleccionado. Siguiendo a Schiffman (1996), el estudio identifica información sobre políticas lingüísticas explícitas e implícitas en lo que respecta a la selección de intérpretes, la consideración de sus repertorios y la calidad de su trabajo. Esta información se analiza luego en relación con los objetivos políticos y económicos de la Compañía de Jesús y de la sociedad secular.     1 MEDICINAL PLANTS OF THE ARGENTINEAN PUNA: A COMMON PROPERTY RESOURCE AND AN OPPORTUNITY FOR LOCAL PEOPLE F.R. Barbarán1 Abstract Considering that poverty increased in Argentina due to local currency devaluation (400 %) in 2002, the objective of the project Cultivating the Health is to create certified phyto- medicines to give them for free to the rural poor. In order to contribute to that objective, I collected and identified the medicinal plants of the Argentinean Puna. The study area is placed in NW Argentina in Salta (Los Andes Department: 25636 Km2) and Jujuy Provinces (Susques Department: 9200 Km2), placed between 3500 and 5000 meters above sea level (m.a.s.l.), near the border with Bolivia and Chile. With the help of 3 medicine women and 18 local guides, 42 species of plants used as medicine by local people, were identified: 1 Pteridaceae, 1 Amaranthaceae, 1 Anacardiaceae, 2 Apiaceae, 13 Asteraceae, 2 Cactaceae, 2 Chenopodiaceae, 1 Ephedraceae, 2 Fabaceae, 1 Krameriaceae, 3 Lamiaceae, 2 Malvaceae, 1 Plantaginaceae, 3 Poaceae, 1 Rosaceae, 2 Solanaceae, 1 Tiphaceae and 4 Verbenaceae. According to their medicinal properties, 10 of those species are offered to tourists, despite one of them Werneria poposa (Asteraceae) is endangered. The traditional knowledge about the use of those plants is being eroded and lost, because now a day is easier for the dwellers to obtain medical attention in primary health care systems. On the other hand, the phytochemical and pharmacological properties of most of those species are little known. There is pharmaceutical information available for only 36 % of the species identified.

    The Song from the Singer: Personification, Embodiment, and Anthropomorphization in Troubadour Lyric Anne Levitsky Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2018 © 2018 Anne Levitsky All rights reserved ABSTRACT The Song from the Singer: Personification, Embodiment, and Anthropomorphization in Troubadour Lyric Anne Levitsky This dissertation explores the relationship of the act of singing to being a human in the lyric poetry of the troubadours, traveling poet-musicians who frequented the courts of contemporary southern France in the twelfth and early thirteenth centuries. In my dissertation, I demonstrate that the troubadours surpass traditionally-held perceptions of their corpus as one entirely engaged with themes of courtly romance and society, and argue that their lyric poetry instead both displays the influence of philosophical conceptions of sound, and critiques notions of personhood and sexuality privileged by grammarians, philosophers, and theologians. I examine a poetic device within troubadour songs that I term ‘personified song’—an occurrence in the lyric tradition where a performer turns toward the song he/she is about to finish singing and directly addresses it. This act lends the song the human capabilities of speech, motion, and agency. It is through the lens of the ‘personified song’ that I analyze this understudied facet of troubadour song. Chapter One argues that the location of personification in the poetic text interacts with the song’s melodic structure to affect the type of personification the song undergoes, while exploring the ways in which singing facilitates the creation of a body for the song.

Hoffmann 1894 Antecedentes Generales Arbusto ramoso, de 90-120 cm de alto, verde oscuro, glabro, sin pelos, con ramas nuevas cubiertas de hojas dispuestas en espiral. Hojas estrechamente lineales, de hasta 35 mm de largo por 1,3-2 mm de ancho, de color verde oscuro, resinosas. Capítulos terminales, solitarios, gruesos, con receptáculo plano, desnudo. Flores purpúreas, dimorfas: las marginales femeninas, bilabiadas, con labio exterior angosto, de 2 cm de largo, tridentado y labio interior bipartido. Flores del disco actinomorfas, hermafroditas, profundamente pentasectas. Estilo cortamente bífido. Anteras sagitadas. Aquenios cubiertos por largos pelos sedosos. Papus formado por 3 a 4 series de cerdas pajizas, las interiores planas, algo ensanchadas en el ápice y paleáceas en la base, barbeladas (Cabrera 1951). Se distingue por ser un arbusto de color verde oscuro con grandes capítulos solitarios y terminales de color morado o lila intenso. Esta especie pertenece a la tribu Mutisieae de las Asteraceae o Compuestas y es considerado de diferenciación muy antigua, con afinidades ancestrales con otras especies como Plazia. Esta opinión es respaldada por análisis morfológicos (Cabrera 1951) y moleculares – geográficos (Luebert et al. 2009). Distribución geográfica (extensión de la presencia) Gypothamnium pinifolium ocupa un endemismo muy restringido en la costa de la Región de Antofagasta. Crece desde quebrada Miguel Díaz (24° 32’ S) por el Norte hasta el Parque Nacional Pan de Azúcar en la Región de Atacama (26° 03’ S) y desde la costa hasta unos 900 m de altitud, en la zona de influencia de la neblina.

A new genus, Paquirea Panero & S.E. Freire, is proposed and described to accommodate the other species of Chucoa , C. lanceolata , as Paquirea lanceolata (H. Beltrán & Ferreyra) Panero & S.E. Freire, comb. nov. The new genus differs from Onoseris in having actinomorphic corollas with lobes of equivalent size and discoid capitula. Paquirea shares with other Onoserideae a shrubby habit, solitary capitula, epaleate receptacles, five- lobed corollas, anthers with long tails, style branches dorsally papillose with rounded apices, and heteromorphic pappi in three series. Among the Onoserideae, Paquirea, because of its solitary capitula and shrubby habit, is most similar to Plazia and Aphyllocladus . Paquirea can be distinguished from these genera by its conspicuously leafy stems (vs. leaves soon deciduous in Aphyllocladus ), alternate leaves (vs. spirally-arranged leaves in Plazia ), discoid capitula (vs. radiate capitula in Plazia ), cream-colored corollas (vs. lilac to purple corollas in Aphyllocladus and white to pink in Plazia ), and glabrous achenes (vs.

Asteraceae is the richest family within the native Chilean Historia Natural, Casilla 787, Santiago, Chile flora, with a total of 121 genera and c. 863 species, currently classified in 18 tribes. The genera are distributed along the whole latitudinal gradient in Chile, with a centre of richness at 33°–34° S. Almost one-third of the genera show small to medium-small ranges of distribution, while two-thirds have medium-large to large latitudinal ranges of distribution. Of the 115 mainland genera, 46% have their main distribution in the central Mediterranean zone between 27°–37° S. Also of the mainland genera, 53% occupy both coastal and Andean environments, while 33% can be considered as strictly Andean and 20% as strictly coastal genera. The biogeographical analysis of relationships allows the distinction of several floristic elements and generalized tracks: the most marked floristic element is the Neotropical, followed by the anti- tropical and the endemic element. The biogeographical analysis provides important insights into the origin and evolution of the Chilean Asteraceae flora. The presence of many localized and endemic taxa has direct conservation implications.
