Published in Eselsohren: Journal of the History of Art, Architecture and Urbanism, 2 (1-2): 87-104 (2015). Of Time, Dissonance and the Symphonic-Poetic City Les Roberts, University of Liverpool The „time‟ of Terence Davies‟s celebrated cine-poem Of Time and the City (2008) can in one sense be characterised as linear inasmuch as it accords with a biographical period – the 1940s to 1970s – that maps on to the history of a specific place: the port-city of Liverpool in the north west of England. The duration of the seventy-five minute film is thus homologous to that of the director‟s own time growing up on post-war Merseyside, from his birth in 1945 until 1973 when he moved away from the city. In other words, the film tells a story that unfolds as a linear narrative: a time-line of geobiographical memory. But the „time‟ of Of Time and the City also conveys a different temporal geography, one that works against the linearity of narrative form. Time in this other sense is poetically woven from the fluid and contingent temporalities of Terence Davies‟s Liverpool: a city reassembled from the excavatory fragments of an archaeology of memory. It is as fitting to describe Of Time and the City as a „symphony‟ as it is for other classics of the genre, such as Walter Ruttman‟s Berlin: Symphony of a Great City (1927) or Dziga Vertov‟s Man with a Movie Camera (1929). However, the film‟s rich orchestration of archival memory (around 85% of the film consists of archive material) and its dissonant poetics of everyday time map out the contours of what might better be described as a „symphonic-poetic city‟.

  • Why Documentaries Matter Recognised As an Innovative Cultural Form
RISJ CHALLENGES CHALLENGES Documentaries have for many decades inhabited the schedules of public Why Documentaries Matter Why broadcasters. They have chronicled the lives and institutions of western democracies. In the past two decades, however, documentaries have become Why Documentaries Matter recognised as an innovative cultural form. Instead of being exclusively funded by television channels, documentaries receive money from a number of sources, including film funds, private investors and foundations. Rather than observing, documentaries are now thought capable of changing the world. Is this what they really do? How do we define a documentary? What does it mean to be the ‘author’ of a film? Nick Fraser has been editor of the BBC’s Storyville series since 1997; here he looks at the history of documentaries, showing how definitions of documentaries have changed – and how fragile is their funding. If we want good documentaries, he concludes, we have to find ways of encouraging their creators. “Nick Fraser writes about documentaries with unique authority. Not only has he made some good ’uns, he has commissioned more than practically anyone else on earth (for the BBC’s Storyville) and - as this book shows - he Nick Fraser has watched docs from their earliest days. His ideas on what the growth of the web and the decline of public service broadcasters mean for doc-makers are informed, imaginative and challenging.” Brian Lapping Chairman and Executive Producer, Brook Lapping “The rise of documentaries over the past two decades owes more to Nick Fraser than to any other single person. For so many of us who make non-fiction films, Nick’s peerless brand of tough love and mischievous curiosity have inspired us to aim higher as we try to promote greater understanding of the major events and issues of our time.” Eugene Jarecki Documentary film maker “This expert lament is beautifully written.

The deindustrialization of the waterfront and the closing up of the river as a well-integrated social landscape (epitomized by the closure of the dockside Overhead Railway in 1956) have precipitated a certain shift in the various “ways of seeing” that have hitherto structured the tourist gaze in Liverpool.

THE COMMUNICATING VILLAGE: HUMPHREY JENNINGS AND SURREALISM NEIL GEORGE COOMBS A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of Liverpool John Moores University for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy January 2014 1 Acknowledgments. With thanks to my supervisors Dr David Sorfa and Dr Lydia Papadimitriou for their support during the process of writing this thesis. 2 Abstract This thesis examines the films of Humphrey Jennings, exploring his work in relation to surrealism. This examination provides an overview of how surrealism’s set of ideas is manifest in Jennings’s documentary film work. The thesis does not assert that his films are surrealist texts or that there is such a thing as a surrealist film; rather it explores how his films, produced in Britain in the period from 1936 to 1950, have a dialectical relationship with surrealism. The thesis first considers Jennings’s work in relation to documentary theory, outlining how and why he is considered a significant filmmaker in the documentary field. It then goes on to consider Jennings’s engagement with surrealism in Britain in the years prior to World War Two. The thesis identifies three paradoxes relating to surrealism in Britain, using these to explore surrealism as an aura that can be read in the films of Jennings. The thesis explores three active phases of Jennings’s film work, each phase culminating in a key film. It acknowledges that Spare Time (1939) and Listen to Britain (1942) are key films in Jennings’s oeuvre, examining these two films and then emphasising the importance of a third, previously generally overlooked, film, The Silent Village (1943).

the badlands collective presents The Long Day Closes A 35MM SCREENING ICA LONDON 10 SEPTEMBER, 2014 WITH SPECIAL GUEST TERENCE DAVIES the badlands collective presents The Long DayCloses 1992 / UK / 85 mins / Directed by Terence Davies / Photographed by Michael Coulter Starring Leigh McCormack, Marjorie Yates Movie lovers often talk of cinema as being their church. In The Long Day Closes, the parallel of these places of worship is made explicit, with an overhead shot of punters watching a film fading into a matching one of heads bowed in prayer. And in the films of Terence Davies in general, there is a constant working out of the obsessions of religion and drama - narratively, as Davies recalls his Catholic upbringing and lifelong romance with movies, and spiritually, as his films use rich tableaux, experimental rhythm and haunting pop, classical and choral music to summon subjective memory with all the stark, contemplative authority of a cathedral mass. The Long Day Closes is a hypnotic, bittersweet ode to boyhood that follows Bud, the autobiographical surrogate for Davies, a lonely lad growing up in postwar Liverpool and navigating the nascent realisation of his homosexuality, the difficulties of schoolmasters, the love of his mother and the sensations of movies, church, candy floss and glacial erosion. Unfolding as a trance of memories and moments, it’s contradictorily at once solipsistic, self-pitying and demanding while being a tribute to a real, fading time and place, an affirmation of family love and life’s beauty, and an entrancingly unique entertainment that displays Davies as one of the most important artists in British filmmaking.
