Malcolm Lowry's Poetics of Space AND MIGUEL MOTA LANE EDITED BY RICHARD J. Malcolm Lowry’s Poetics of Space offers new and controversial readings that seek to readdress Lowry’s masterpiece Under the Volcano and many of his MALCOLM Lowry’S other writings. MALCOLM LOWRY’S POETICS OF SPACE MALCOLM LOWRY’S Richard J. Lane is Professor of English at Vancouver Island University, BC. He directs the Seminar for Advanced Studies in the Humanities and the Literary Theory Research Group at VIU, where he is also the principal investigator of the MeTA Digital Humanities Lab. Lane is also a director of Innovation Island Technology Association, as well as an Associated Researcher at The Electronic Textual Cultures Lab at the University of Victoria. Miguel Mota is Associate Professor of English at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, BC. In addition to his work on Lowry, Mota has published in the areas of contemporary British literature and culture and on the relationship between literature and film, including articles on Jeanette Winterson, John King, Mike Leigh, Derek Jarman, and Peter Greenaway. Even aside from the two substantial and influential biographies in the conventional sense (by Douglas Day, in 1973, and Gordon Bowker, in 1993), much of the scholarly criticism involving Lowry has had the hint of the biographical about it, even when the principal approach has been formalist or post-structuralist. The most important recent collection of critical essays on Lowry (Frederick Asals and Paul Tiessen’s A Darkness That Murmured: Essays on Malcolm Lowry and the Twentieth Century, 2000), though clearly encouraging a new, postmodernist reading of Lowry, nevertheless begins with an implicit acknowl- edgment of the central place of biography in critical approaches to Lowry’s work: “His habit of personal mythmaking sometimes obscured with its transforma- tions what (in so far as it could be determined) had actually occurred, but even when Lowry’s own fictions were penetrated, dark areas remained, incidents, even periods, wholly or partially mysterious” (11). For its part, Bryan Biggs and Helen Tookey’s Malcolm Lowry: From the Mersey to the World, published in 2009 to celebrate the centenary of Lowry’s birth, offers a suggestively hybrid collection of personal reminiscences, scholarly pieces, fiction, and photographic repro- ductions of visual works that, while acknowledging the impossibility of fully doing so, nevertheless seeks to “place” Lowry by addressing the geographical, psychological, and creative “voyaging” undertaken by the author throughout his life. This search for the “mystery” of the life in the work is perhaps inescapable, given the extent to which Lowry turned himself, and has subsequently been turned by others, into a “textual” being. It is perhaps equally unsurprising that such a connection between “textuality” and “identity” wrought such anxiety through- out Lowry’s life and work. Sherrill Grace’s early assessment of Lowry as “Ortega [y Gasset]’s man in the process of creating (as opposed to finding) his identity through the creation of masks” (Voyage 102) resonates in Patrick McCarthy’s later insistence that “for Lowry, writing was both his life and a threat to his life: although he seems to have assumed that he could discover or define his identity 0059_Poetics_of_Space_5.5x8_ES_01_vs04_September30_2016.indd 1 2016-09-30 6:17 AM 2 Malcolm Lowry’s Poetics of Space only through writing, he also feared that the process of composition would leave him without any identity apart from the work” (Forests 4). The question becomes, then, not how to extricate Lowry’s writing from his life—for that is surely an impossible, perhaps even undesirable, task, the two being so ingrained—but, rather, how to create a critical space within which the relations between writing and life can be both materially located and given imaginative play. One possibility is to see space itself as a category capable of such mobility. In his essay “Of Other Spaces,” Michel Foucault suggests that if the “great obsession” of the nineteenth century was history, then that of the twentieth was space: “The present epoch will perhaps be above all the epoch of space” (Foucault 22). Yet, as Foucault himself insists, space has a history and is impli- cated in various historical discursive practices and relations: The space in which we live, which draws us out of ourselves, in which the erosion of our lives, our time and our history occurs, the space that claws and gnaws at us, is also, in itself, a heterogeneous space. In other words, we do not live in a kind of void, inside of which we could place individuals and things. We do not live inside a void that could be colored with diverse shades of light, we live inside a set of relations that delineates sites which are irreducible to one another and absolutely not superimposable on one another. (23) How to situate Malcolm Lowry in space, then, given that “space” can mean so much to so many, produced as it is by a seemingly infinite web of relations— especially in an age when the virtual increasingly challenges the material as the place of the imagination? In her article “The Creative Process: An Introduction to Time and Space in Malcolm Lowry’s Fiction,” Grace writes intriguingly of Lowry’s “fear of space”: Just as Lowry cannot be fully appreciated without prior knowledge of his voyage theories, those theories cannot be understood without an aware- ness of Lowry’s reverence for time and his fear of space.

    THE DESCENT INTO HELL OF JACQUES LARUELLE Chapter I of " Under the Volcano" David Falk 1IT IS HARDLY NEWS that Malcolm Lowry's Under the Vol- cano is a profoundly autobiographical work, but worth stressing is the extent to which the novel was prompted by a desire, not for self-discovery, but for self- mastery. The writing of the novel was meant to provide Lowry with the neces- sary psychic distance from what he called the "forces in man which cause him to be terrified of himself"1 so that he would not succumb to them. By projecting these forces from within the self into the novel, Lowry hoped to transform them permanently into fiction : to confine them between the covers of his work so that they could no longer function as a real force in his life. The process is most obvious with Geoffrey Firmin, whom Lowry described as composed of "self 4- bad guilty imagination."2 The Consul is the nexus for what was most self-despairing and self-destructive in Lowry. As the Consul's story, Under the Volcano tells of his capitulation before the terrifying forces within, and tells us in such a way that this defeat is a given. For Chapter I is set on the anniversary of the Consul's death so that what we witness in the eleven ensuing chapters is the unfolding of a fate we know already to be sealed. The inescapability of the Consul's doom contributes heavily to its tragic weight and makes him the towering figure he is.

Of Time, Dissonance and the Symphonic-Poetic City Les Roberts, University of Liverpool The „time‟ of Terence Davies‟s celebrated cine-poem Of Time and the City (2008) can in one sense be characterised as linear inasmuch as it accords with a biographical period – the 1940s to 1970s – that maps on to the history of a specific place: the port-city of Liverpool in the north west of England. The duration of the seventy-five minute film is thus homologous to that of the director‟s own time growing up on post-war Merseyside, from his birth in 1945 until 1973 when he moved away from the city. In other words, the film tells a story that unfolds as a linear narrative: a time-line of geobiographical memory. But the „time‟ of Of Time and the City also conveys a different temporal geography, one that works against the linearity of narrative form. Time in this other sense is poetically woven from the fluid and contingent temporalities of Terence Davies‟s Liverpool: a city reassembled from the excavatory fragments of an archaeology of memory. It is as fitting to describe Of Time and the City as a „symphony‟ as it is for other classics of the genre, such as Walter Ruttman‟s Berlin: Symphony of a Great City (1927) or Dziga Vertov‟s Man with a Movie Camera (1929). However, the film‟s rich orchestration of archival memory (around 85% of the film consists of archive material) and its dissonant poetics of everyday time map out the contours of what might better be described as a „symphonic-poetic city‟.

    7. Conclusion : Telefilm, Cross-Media Migration, and the Demise of the Film Serial Abstract The conclusion offers an outlook past the 1940s. It places film serials in the context of the shifting cinema landscape in the 1940s and 1950s and the rise of television. The chapter compares the viewer address of film serials to television’s programming in terms of a ‘segmented flow’ and argues that film serials imagined and practiced a televisual mediality before the advent of TV. Serials and television thus became convergent media, which counters the prevalent notion that television killed film serials. The chapter further stresses the adaptability of the film-serial form to varying exhibition and distribution contexts, which helps to explain their continuous reappearance in the multiple ‘new media’ in the second half of the twentieth century and in the digital culture of the twenty-first century. Keywords: television programming, televisual flow, post-WWII film history, independent film production The present moment is an arbitrary one to end a study of film serials. Al- though the heyday of their production is well in the past, serials that were thought to be lost continue to reappear in archives or in private collections. Online fan groups like the serialsquadron.com offer increasing numbers of serials on DVD. Other enthusiasts make them available on youtube or upload them to archive.org, and scholars like Richard Koszarski are making an effort to locate ‘new’ film serials. In the final months of writing, for instance, Pathe’s The House of Hate (1918) was located in Russia, digitalized, and translated back into English.

In a particular way, the details of Under the Volcano closely mirror those of Lowry's own life, particularly his tragic preoccupation with alcoholism. (See appendix for a brief biographical account of Lowry's life.) Fact and fiction are so interwoven in Under the Volcano that it is impossible to separate them--nor is it necessary, for it is the larger pattern of Lowry's life, his search for a personal identity and a meaningful life to accompany it, which informs his work and gives depth and perspecti.ve to otherwise isolated fragments in the his­ tory of a man's personal destruction. Evidence of Lowry's preoccupation with his various selves and their fictional counterparts can be found in Conrad Knickerbocker's brief biographical account, "The Voyages of Malcolm Lowry." Knickerbocker tells how Lowry reacted when he was notified that Under the Volcano had been accepted finally in both America and England: What Lowry ..•recogni zed in a moment of terror was the self-consuming quality of the work.
