7. Conclusion : Telefilm, Cross-Media Migration, and the Demise of the Film Serial Abstract The conclusion offers an outlook past the 1940s. It places film serials in the context of the shifting cinema landscape in the 1940s and 1950s and the rise of television. The chapter compares the viewer address of film serials to television’s programming in terms of a ‘segmented flow’ and argues that film serials imagined and practiced a televisual mediality before the advent of TV. Serials and television thus became convergent media, which counters the prevalent notion that television killed film serials. The chapter further stresses the adaptability of the film-serial form to varying exhibition and distribution contexts, which helps to explain their continuous reappearance in the multiple ‘new media’ in the second half of the twentieth century and in the digital culture of the twenty-first century. Keywords: television programming, televisual flow, post-WWII film history, independent film production The present moment is an arbitrary one to end a study of film serials. Al- though the heyday of their production is well in the past, serials that were thought to be lost continue to reappear in archives or in private collections. Online fan groups like the serialsquadron.com offer increasing numbers of serials on DVD. Other enthusiasts make them available on youtube or upload them to archive.org, and scholars like Richard Koszarski are making an effort to locate ‘new’ film serials. In the final months of writing, for instance, Pathe’s The House of Hate (1918) was located in Russia, digitalized, and translated back into English. -

But Jay Scheib’s “World of Wires,” which the adapter-director is staging at the Institute of Contemporary Art this weekend, comes with a more serious pedigree. Scheib is an associate professor of theater arts at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and well known as a writer and director of plays and opera. He was a 2011 Guggenheim fellow and won a 2012 Obie Award for directing “World of Wires” at the Kitchen in New York, where it premiered in January. But the story line does have that mind-blowing feel. A man named Fred Stiller (Jon Morris) works for a corporation that has created a vast, complex computer simulation. A co-worker disappears and no one seems to remember her. -

Europa, one of four largest moons of Jupiter, is unique among the many moons and planets of our solar system. The NASA Voyager II mission to Jupiter revealed a moon with a smooth surface, completely covered with ice. Many scientists now believe that a huge ocean of liquid water may lie beneath a 50-100 km thick mantle of ice. The possibility that Europa might be covered by an immense ocean makes it one of the few places in our solar system, outside Earth, where there might be some chance, however slight, of finding other life forms. The opera takes place in the distant future, where a permanent submerged base beneath the ice of Europa has been established to explore the vast ocean there and search for signs of life. Two young scientists, Adrian and Natalie, arrive by spacecraft at the base, where they are to join two other scientists already stationed there. Deep beneath the ice of this foreign world a dramatic story unfolds: Natalie falls in love with Adrian, but he rejects her. -

Journal of e-Media Studies Volume 5, Issue 1, 2016 Dartmouth College Television in the Cinema Before 1939: An International Annotated Database, with an Introduction by Richard Koszarski Richard Koszarski and Doron Galili Visions of the Future An Introduction by Richard Koszarski Albert Abramson traced the first appearance of the word television to a paper presented in Paris by the Russian electrical engineer Constantin Perskyi on August 25, 1900. Perskyi discussed his own work as well as the contributions of his predecessors, such as Paul Nipkow, and suggested television as a replacement for words like telectroscope, one of many terms already in common use whenever the phenomenon of distant electric vision was under discussion. The International Electricity Congress, which heard the paper, was meeting in Paris that summer because this is where the great Exposition Universelle of 1900 was being held. For film historians, the exposition is renowned for its fabulous array of new projection technologies, involving everything from widescreen and color to talking pictures and Cineorama. Perskyi's linguistic contribution, on the other hand, is remembered only by specialists. One wonders if the proponents of the téléoscope and the téléphote, as they roamed the exposition, gave any thought to these new marvels of the cinema, and asked themselves why their medium still lagged so far behind in every conceivable measure. Seeing at a distance was a notion that had captivated engineers and entrepreneurs since word of Alexander Graham Bell's telephone first began to spread in the late 1870s, yet here it was 1900, and still only in the talking stage? People around the world had been waiting for television for decades, but the engineers had given them the cinema instead, a rival moving-image medium that appeared to have leapt from dream to multinational industry almost overnight. -
