  • Of Time, Dissonance and the Symphonic-Poetic City Les Roberts, University of Liverpool
Published in Eselsohren: Journal of the History of Art, Architecture and Urbanism, 2 (1-2): 87-104 (2015). Of Time, Dissonance and the Symphonic-Poetic City Les Roberts, University of Liverpool The „time‟ of Terence Davies‟s celebrated cine-poem Of Time and the City (2008) can in one sense be characterised as linear inasmuch as it accords with a biographical period – the 1940s to 1970s – that maps on to the history of a specific place: the port-city of Liverpool in the north west of England. The duration of the seventy-five minute film is thus homologous to that of the director‟s own time growing up on post-war Merseyside, from his birth in 1945 until 1973 when he moved away from the city. In other words, the film tells a story that unfolds as a linear narrative: a time-line of geobiographical memory. But the „time‟ of Of Time and the City also conveys a different temporal geography, one that works against the linearity of narrative form. Time in this other sense is poetically woven from the fluid and contingent temporalities of Terence Davies‟s Liverpool: a city reassembled from the excavatory fragments of an archaeology of memory. It is as fitting to describe Of Time and the City as a „symphony‟ as it is for other classics of the genre, such as Walter Ruttman‟s Berlin: Symphony of a Great City (1927) or Dziga Vertov‟s Man with a Movie Camera (1929). However, the film‟s rich orchestration of archival memory (around 85% of the film consists of archive material) and its dissonant poetics of everyday time map out the contours of what might better be described as a „symphonic-poetic city‟.

Palavras-chave: Edwardian Britain in Colour; história do trabalho; história na TV; filme; fontes visuais. Abstract: As soon as film technology was invented in the late nineteenth century, it was used by European film-makers to record, document and represent local working lives. The films were typically short, silent and monochrome. They were made and funded by different people for different purposes, including by business owners to promote their enterprises, as well as by showmen who charged those depicted to pay to come and see the spectacle of themselves and their friends on screen.

Palavras-chave: subjetividade, auto-reflexividade, realizador no enquadramento. Abstract: The presence of the filmmaker as a subject in the documentary frame represents a unique relationship between documentary film and history, where the filmmaker engages with social history through their personal experience of authoring a representation of it. This paper explores how the tension between the filmmaker’s presence as an author and as a subject enacts a kind of self-reflexivity that recasts the possibilities of representing history through documentary film. Keywords: Subjectivity, self-reflexivity, filmmaker in the frame.

  • The Caretaker: Ambiguity from Page to Stage
Volume 2 Issue 4 INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF HUMANITIES AND March 2016 CULTURAL STUDIES ISSN 2356-5926 The Caretaker: Ambiguity from page to stage Mariem Souissi Faculty of Arts and Humanities University of Sousse, Tunisia [email protected] Abstract This paper will rivet on the specific techniques used by Clive Donner, the director of The Caretaker movie to underline the ambiguity on the screen stage. It is by analyzing the mise-en scene that we begin to see what are the meanings intended by the director. In other words, analyzing the camera movements, the zooming in and the zooming out , paying attention to the style of actors ‘performance and how objects are placed in the scene would highlight the artistically elusive characteristics of the movie. The editing within the film and the spectators ‘receptions are also very important to grasp the meanings of the work. Keywords: The Caretaker, Mise-en Scene, ambiguity, Filmic techniques, Performance. http://www.ijhcs.com/index.php/ijhcs/index Page 1084 Volume 2 Issue 4 INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF HUMANITIES AND March 2016 CULTURAL STUDIES ISSN 2356-5926 It is noteworthy to mention that in staging a filmic scene, any minor detail becomes meaningful as soon as it is captured by the camera, which is not the case in stage theatre. Film Studies assert that in order to study a film and deconstruct its meaning, we should pay attention to its mise en scene and examine how the film is constructed and shaped (Nelmes 14). In his book Introduction to Film Studies: Critical Approaches, Richard Dyer defines Film Studies as an academic field of study that approaches films theoretically, historically and critically.
