One is to develop a numerical indicator of the level of public confidence in the peace process using a set of standardized questions, which remain unchanged with each wave. The other is to use a set of questions related to recent social, economic and political developments in order to gauge public opinion of the peace process, which by definition will change from one wave to another. Such information, collected over a period of time, will provide civil society and policy makers a useful barometer of the opinions of Sri Lankan polity, and ensure that the collective opinions of the public are given due importance and incorporated into the policy debate. SCOPE & METHODOLOGY The survey is carried out using a structured questionnaire administered through face-to-face interviews amongst a 1707 randomly selected sample. This survey was conducted among 21 administrative districts, however, in the districts of Jaffna, Vavuniya, Batticoloa and Ampara, only the Government controlled areas were surveyed. Data is weighted to reflect the actual ethnographic composition of the districts in which the sample was surveyed.

Former Pakistani test cricket captain Imran Khan is also addressing the same conference. CIMA Sri Lanka is the Colombo branch of the UK-based Chartered Institute of Management Accountancy. This is first visit to Sri Lanka by the architect of Malaysia's economic boom. Dr Mahathir will be hosted by President Kumaratunga to dinner on May 26 soon after the CIMA event. Metaphors literally contribute to our understanding of reality. The frames and scripts used for legitimization and de-legitimization of the issues related to international intervention and facilitation in the peace talk, peace process and monitoring the ceasefire bring out certain realities comfortable to certain people, groups or communities. The binary positions projected in the editorial discourse are identified. Discourse constitutes power in constructing ideational, textual and interpersonal constructs which are ideological. It can transmit and even legitimize power in society. During the peace talk time, the editorials are expected to develop constructive discourse on conflict intervention and resolution to make a positive impact on legislative changes but they display ‘ethno-nationalist’ tendencies.

Fundamental rights - Entering a house to arrest a person - Powers of a police officer - Sections 24 and 25 of the Code of Criminal Procedure Act - Section 125 of the Evidence Ordinance - Article 12 (1) of the Constitution. On 12. 02. 1997 at about 2.15 am the 2nd respondent Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Criminal Investigation and the 3rd respondent Deputy Director, Criminal Investigation entered the petitioner's residence without a warrant or the petitioner's permission purporting to act under sections 24 and 25 of the Code of Criminal Procedure Act on the basis that they had "reason to believe" that a murder suspect - one Punchi Nilame had entered the premises. Those respondents stated that they acted on the instructions of the 1st respondent Inspector-General of Police who had told the 1st respondent that a private informant whom he (the 1st respondent) had known personally for 15 years and had given reliable information on many previous instances told him that he (the said informant) had observed Punchi Nilame entering the petitioner's residence at about 9 pm on 11. 02. 1997. The informant was then produced before the 2nd respondent who after questioning him directed the 3rd respondent to question him further. The 3rd respondent has made a note that he questioned the informant who stated that he observed the suspect entering the petitioner's residence from the rear side entrance.
