Emir Kusturica & the No Smoking Orchestra … • Music Heritage in Relocation: the “Guča Na Krasu” Festival
MUSIC HERITAGE IN RELOCATION: THE “GUČA NA KRASU” FESTIVAL Ana HOFMANI COBISS 1.01 ABSTRACT Music Heritage in Relocation: The “Guča na Krasu” Festival This article attempts to turn from describing heritage in the framework of official and everyday dis- courses of identity and politics of belonging towards acknowledging its spatial nature. As an example, I use the Guča na Krasu festival in order to explore two main questions: how a strong notion of locality is mediated by the non-locality of sound, and the ways in which globalization and mobility are remod- elling music heritage protocols, particularly in the case of migrant communities. I explore the ways in which trumpet orchestra music, as one of the main genres of Balkan music on the world music market, is becoming an affective tool of identification and affiliation, and bringing a newly emergent global- local dynamics to the existing heritage management of the Serbian community living in this area. The discourses of heterogeneity and transnationality in branding Balkan music have led to an ambivalent identification with the festival among community members. Navigating between sound environments, music heritage protocols, globalization processes and affective technologies, the space is approached through an examination of the complexity of relations among communities, affective spatio-temporal sound collectivities, and music globalization processes. KEY WORDS: Guča na Krasu, spatio-temporal sound collectivities, trumpet orchestras, Balkan music, her- itage protocols IZVLEČEK Premeščanje glasbene dediščine: Festival Guča na Krasu Članek poskuša preseči opisovanje dediščine v okviru uradnih in vsakodnevnih diskurzov identitete in politik pripadnosti ter raje poudariti pomen prostora v odnosu do dediščine.

Dr. Nele Karajlić in the Framework of the “New Primitives” Borislava Vučković, PhD Independent researcher1 Received: 15 February 2017 Accepted: 1 June 2017 Original scientific paper Abstract The “New Primitives” is an alternative, and later, a cultural movement that emerged in Sarajevo in the late 1970s and early 1980s; the movement officially ceased to exist in 1987. The most substantial cultural capital of the movement relates to “Zabranjeno pušenje” (“No Smoking”) band and the radio and television show Top lista nadrealista (Top List of Surrealists), while the biggest individual cultural capital lies with Nenad Janković, a phony doctor with the “erotic” pseudonym of Dr. Nele Karajlić. The subject matter of this article is the authorship and co-authorship of Dr. Nele Karajlić within the “No Smoking” band and the television show Top List of Surrealists in the cultural space of the socialist Yugoslavia during the 1980s. Key words: Dr. Nele Karajlić, “New Primitivеs,” “No Smoking Orchestra” band, Top List of Surrealists “New Primitivism” was one of the most significant youth alternative movements in Yugoslavia during the 1980s, notable for their attempts of “creating an authentic rock culture” (Dragićević-Šešić 1992: 173). This research focuses on the general characteri- stics and aesthetics of “New Primitivism,” the role of Dr. Nele Karajlić in constituting the movement, his performances and the analysis of the (humorous) language used in songs that he wrote for the “No Smoking” band and in the screenplays for the televi- sion series Top List of Surrealists.

  • Emir Kusturica & the No Smoking Orchestra
Media release **STRICTLY EMBARGOED UNTIL 10AM SATURDAY 5 NOVEMBER, 2016** EMIR KUSTURICA & THE NO SMOKING ORCHESTRA SERBIA | NZ PREMIERE VENUE: The Civic DATES: Thursday 16 March, 7.30pm Emir Kusturica & The No Smoking Orchestra are a band beholden to no show biz dogma but their own. Genre-defying, irreverent and just ever-so-slightly mad, the Serbian super group are on their way to Auckland Arts Festival 2017. Entertaining, provocative and entirely amusing, Emir Kusturica & the No Smoking Orchestra, with their frantic ‘unza, unza’-Balkan versions of rumba, rock and gypsy music, will bring the house down when they play their one-night-only concert at The Civic. The No Smoking Orchestra has a history that extends back to 1979 when two Sarejevan teenagers founded an anarchic garage rock folk band called Zabranjeno Pušenje, or “No Smoking” in English, at a time when the rest of the popular music scene was wrapped up in punk rock and new wave. The two musicians secured the band’s place in the history of rock music before falling out and then breaking up during the Bosnian War. All was not forgotten, however, as each of the former band members re-established a band in their new respective locations – Serbia and Croatia – with the same name, and for a few years during mid-to-late 1990s, two parallel bands named Zabranjeno Pušenje existed. Emir Kusturica joined the Serbian splinter and over time the band was renamed to The No Smoking Orchestra, before eventually becoming Emir Kusturica & the No Smoking Orchestra. It wasn’t always about the music for Kusturica – the enigmatic, Sarajevo-born director, actor, musician and producer’s first love was film-making.
