SATELLITE GEODESY Compiled by Mariusz Figurski, Grzegorz Nykiel, Paweł Wielgosz, and Anna Krypiak-Gregorczyk Introduction This part of the Polish National Report concerns research on Satellite Geodesy performed in Poland from 2018 to 2020. The activity of the Polish institutions in the field of satellite geodesy and navigation are focused on the several main fields: • global and regional GPS and SLR measurements in the frame of International GNSS Service (IGS), International Laser Ranging Service (ILRS), International Earth Rotation and Reference Systems Service (IERS), European Reference Frame Permanent Network (EPN), • Polish geodetic permanent network – ASG-EUPOS, • modeling of ionosphere and troposphere, • practical utilization of satellite methods in local geodetic applications, • geodynamic study, • metrological control of Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) equipment, • use of gravimetric satellite missions, • application of GNSS in overland, maritime and air navigation, • multi-GNSS application in geodetic studies. Semi Cryogenic Technology for Gaganyaan: RSTV – In Depth Anchor: Teena Jha Context: India's strategic partner Russia has offered its Semi Cryogenic engine technology and critical components for the Gaganyaan project. Gaganyaan: In 2018, India’s first manned space mission was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his Independence Day speech. Gaganyaan will be the Indian crewed orbital spacecraft intended to be the basis of Indian Human Space Flight Program. With Gaganyaan, India will become only the 4th country after Russia, the USA and China to send humans to space. It will be ISRO’s next big project after the anticipated soft landing of Chandrayaan 2 on the lunar The target is to launch it before the 75 year celebration of India’s independence. Before the manned mission scheduled for December 2021, two unmanned tests will be carried out in December 2020 and July 2021. ISRO’s indigenous mission will be assisted by few other countries in selecting and training astronauts. According to ISRO, a budget of Rs 10,000 Cr. has been set aside for putting the infrastructure in place. It is described as a national mission than an ISRO mission. The Spacecraft: The spacecraft will take 3 Indian astronauts, who will be known as ‘vyomnauts’ (in Sanskrit ‘vyom’ means space. It will circle the earth for 7 days from a distance of 300-400 km. It will be launched by India’s biggest rocket GSLV Mk 3 from Sriharikotta. The 7 ton spacecraft will orbit the earth at an altitude of 400km for up to 7 days. -

Editor’s Corner Steve Platnick obser ervth EOS Senior Project Scientist The joint NASA–U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Landsat program celebrated a major milestone on July 23 with the 40th anniversary of the launch of the Landsat-1 mission—then known as the Earth Resources and Technology Satellite (ERTS). Landsat-1 was the first in a series of seven Landsat satellites launched to date. At least one Landsat satellite has been in operation at all times over the past four decades providing an uninter- rupted record of images of Earth’s land surface. This has allowed researchers to observe patterns of land use from space and also document how the land surface is changing with time. Numerous operational applications of Landsat data have also been developed, leading to improved management of resources and informed land use policy decisions. (The image montage at the bottom of this page shows six examples of how Landsat data has been used over the last four decades.) To commemorate the anniversary, NASA and the USGS helped organize and participated in several events on July 23. A press briefing was held over the lunch hour at the Newseum in Washington, DC, where presenta- tions included the results of a My American Landscape contest. Earlier this year NASA and the USGS sent out a press release asking Americans to describe landscape change that had impacted their lives and local areas. Of the many responses received, six were chosen for discussion at the press briefing with the changes depicted in time series or pairs of Landsat images. -

Thales Alenia Space Experience on Plasma Propulsion IEPC-2007-301 Presented at the 30th International Electric Propulsion Conference, Florence, Italy September 17-20, 2007 Michel LYSZYK* and Laurent LECARDONNEL.† Thales Alenia Space, Cannes, 06150, France Abstract: Thales Alenia Space experience on plasma propulsion has been developed in the frame of Stentor, Astra 1K and GEI programs with plasma propulsion systems using SPT100 thrusters manufactured by Fakel and commercialized by Snecma . The PPS (plasma propulsion system) use in house equipments such as Power Processing Unit (PPU) manufactured by TAS-ETCA in Charleroi and the Thruster Orientation Mechanism (TOM) manufactured by TAS-France in Cannes . The PPS subsystem is used on board our SpaceBus satellite family to perform North-South station keeping. The on going activity on the XPS (Xenon Propulsion System) is devoted to the next European platform Alphabus currently under joint development by Thales Alenia Space and Astrium with CNES and ESA support. The XPS uses also the PPU manufactured by TAS-ETCA , the TOM manufactured by TAS-France and the Xe tank developed by TAS-Italy ; it use also the PPS1350 thruster under qualification by Snecma , a xenon regulator and a latch valve under development at Marotta Ireland. I. Introduction HIS document describes the Thales Alenia Space experience gained through Stentor , Astra 1K , GEI, T Spacebus and Alphabus programs on plasma Hall effect thrusters propulsion subsystems . For Spacebus application a description of the subsystem is given together with the general achieved performances .
