From the beginnings of human history, people have designated particular locations as sacred and traveled to them in a pilgrimage. When Christianity became the official religion of the Roman Empire in 314 CE, Christian shrines emerged very soon at martyrs’ tombs and other places of historical importance in development of this religion. The distribution of physical relics created many of the Christian shrines in Western Europe. Popular belief concerning Mary began to evolve upon Jesus’ death; and in turn, most of these beliefs were adopted into Roman Catholic doctrine and became Mariology or Marianism, the veneration of Mary. In Western Europe, a number of shrines were created from an apparition of Mary to local people, and with any shrine’s approval by the institutional Church, it gained an international reputation and following; shrines not granted this approval by the Church have remained less internationally well-known and mostly locally based.

We seek to build the Kingdom of God by: Using our unique gifts to minister to one another, Welcoming all and caring for those in need, Teaching our faith to others and Uniting in worship as a family with the Body of Christ. Dear Holy People of God: Fellow pilgrims, today’s gospel, Jesus tells us the drama of forgiveness that we should practice in our lives: Peter asked Jesus, “Lord, if my brother sins against me, how often must I forgive? As many as seven times?” Jesus answered, “I say to you, not seven times but seventy-seven times.” The times we must forgive is told to us in number, “not seven times but seventy-seven times.” In other words, it’s “always” or “as long as it takes.” Jesus went beyond what was required by law, he removed all barriers that blocked the proactive act of forgiveness. For Jesus, forgiveness must emanate from the heart. It’s an act of love and must be unconditional. As long as the heart is beating, forgiveness is actively blessing; it never dies and it never ends. A product of forgiveness is “reconciliation-conversion.” Reconciliation is the charism of the Congregation of the Missionaries of Our Lady of La Salette (MS).

OUR MISSION: The Community of St. Mary, a diverse people sharing a common pilgrim journey within the Catholic Church, committed to following Jesus’ commandment to love God, love neighbors and go make disciples. October 25, 2020 | 30th Sunday in Ordinary Time No contact necessary! No requirements for requesting a box! Welcome to St. Mary! We’d love you to connect with us! St. Mary Catholic Church @StMaryWoodstock stmary-woodstock.org Text LoveGod to 84576 Next Week’s Gospel: Mt 5:1-12a Turn to Page 6 for a complete list of the weekly readings! A LETTER FROM OUR PASTOR Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, In this Month of October, the Month of the Holy Rosary, we continue to talk about the things that pertain to our Lady, Mary the Mother of our Lord and our Mother. That she made thousands of apparitions throughout history is a sure sign that our Lady plays an active role in salvation. Rightfully so, the Church gave Her the title Co-Redemptrix as an appropriate attribute because with Her son and through Him, She calls for conversion and renewed fidelity to God. In the apparitions which took place all across the globe, Mary always called for the return to her Son, echoing her own words in the Gospel: “Do whatever He [Jesus] tells you.” The earliest record of a Marian apparition is attributed to Apostle James who saw our Lady while he was preaching by the Ebro River in Saragossa, Spain. According to scholars, there are about 2,500 Marian apparitions on record; about 500 of these took place in the 20th Century alone.

  • The Evolving Missiology of the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary By
i The Evolving Missiology of the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary by Heather Mona Weedon Ba. Theol, Ma. Theol A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Theology University of Divinity 2017 ii ABSTRACT This thesis traces the ways in which the missiology of the Institute of the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary has evolved from its beginning, and how it has expanded its self- understanding following the recommendations of the Second Vatican Council, and the further evolution following subsequent events of the new millennium. During her time as the spiritual guide of her Institute, the foundress, Helene de Chappotin, repeated time and again her cry to God: “Where are you leading me?” Taking up this prayer, this thesis will use the same question as the springboard to discover how the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary have evolved and are still evolving. While there was little change in the missiology of the Institute until the Second Vatican Council, the Sisters continued their Foundress’ charism by following her example and studying her writings. In this way they continued to evolve their Missiology according to the to the signs of the times and the situations in which they encountered others. iii DECLARATION OF ORIGINALITY I certify that this thesis contains no material which has been accepted for the award of another degree or diploma in any university or other Institutions, and affirm that to the best of my knowledge the thesis contains no material previously published or written by another person, except where due reference is made in the text of the thesis.

  • Image, Authenticity and the Cult of Saint Thérèse of Lisieux, 1897-1959
Image, Authenticity and the Cult of Saint Thérèse of Lisieux, 1897-1959 Thesis submitted in accordance with the requirements of the University of Liverpool for the degree of Doctor in Philosophy by Sophia Lucia Deboick January 2011 Acknowledgements To the team at the Archives of the Carmel of Lisieux, heartfelt thanks for indispensible advice and practical help during my weeks in Lisieux, including the provision of everything from Normandy cider to doctor’s appointments (the two not being in any way related). They allowed generous access to these private archives and without their expert knowledge and patient assistance this thesis could never have been written. Also thanks to the prioress, Sœur Dominique, the whole community of the Carmel of Lisieux and their volunteers, many of whom found themselves called to answer the door to me at odd hours and always offered a warm welcome. The Sanctuaire de Lisieux provided accommodation free of charge during my last trip to Lisieux and my thanks go to the pilgrimage team, Laurence Panontin and her colleagues Ria and Barbara, for their help, and also to the Director of the Pilgrimage Office and Rector of the Basilique Sainte- Thérèse, Monsignor Bernard Lagoutte, for allowing me to stay in accommodation normally reserved for the pilgrimage’s volunteer guides. Laurence Fafchamps, of the pilgrimage staff, provided much practical help, enabling me to obtain photographs of the Diorama Sainte-Thérèse and making enquiries about its history on my behalf. The travailleuses missionaires at the Ermitage Sainte-Thérèse provided a wonderful place to stay on other occasions and I thank them for their hospitality to an interloping researcher among the pilgrims.
